            The film begins with a scene from a police station where the police officer Sasi in charge orders that the documented criminal cases in the form of manuscripts be converted into digital format. During this process he comes across a really spine chilling dacoity murder case from several years ago. After reading the case history he calls up the police officer who had taken charge of the case, Theeran Thirumaran (Karthi). The story shifts to the year of 1999, where Theeran is in his police training college undergoing training to be posted as DSP from TNPSC (Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission) exams. He tops the training period. Simultaneously in a house along the highway of Tamil Nadu a group of dacoits wreck the house by barging in killing all the people inside gruesomely and taking the belongings.Meanwhile Theeran returns to his hometown of Tanjavur falls in love with his new neighbour Priya (Rakul Preet Singh) and marries her. Later Theeran becomes known in the police department for his ways of handling various cases and he is later moved to Ponneri after a dacoital attack. Police Inspector Satya (Bose Venkat) and Theeran both handle the case but lead nowhere with the case. Therefore in 2003 Theeran and Sathya and a group of other police officers go around India to see if they are able to identify the fingerprints of the dacoits. During this process Theeran learns that these dacoits are actually tribe members of the left over cultural groups after the Indian Independence. They are eventually stopped by the carelessness of their superior officers and the case is put on hold.Later in 2003 the dacoits raid the house of the ruling party's MLA and kill him. The government is under heavy pressure from the public and the Home Minister gives Theeran all powers and a full team to nab the dacoits. A year later they find one fingerprint match in Uttar Pradesh prison and go to a lorry station to capture the dacoit. Learning that the lorry has left and it is heading to Ponneri Theeran and the other officers rush to stop them. This time the dacoits raid Sathya's house killing his wife and eventually injuring Priya putting her in a coma.Angered by this incident Theeran with the help of higher officials puts together a team to capture the gang of dacoits lead by Oma (Abhimanyu Singh). They camp in Rajasthan with the help of a local police officer. They come to know that the gang members except Oma are in their village so they visit the village only to be sent out by the villagers. While the case is going on Theeran learns that Priya has gone into a critical state and an operation is required. This fuels Theeran's anger which makes him even more motivated to find Oma. The team learns that there is a way to bring Oma out from his village. So he captures the organizer of the gang and captures one of the gang members and puts them in police custody. Infuriated Oma vows to kill Theeran and his team. Theeran gets information that Oma will be on a train which is infiltrated by the team but Oma escapes to a nearby village. Theeran and his team walk to the village and reside there for the night. Oma's gang infiltrate the village destroying it and killing Theeran's teammates. Finally Theeran captures Oma brings him to Tamil Nadu and gets him a death sentence.Now in 2017 it is revealed that Theeran has a boring useless post in the Traffic Vigilance Department because he is straightforward and lives alone after the death of Priya. Theeran is visited by Sathya, Sathya's daughter and Sasi. Sasi salutes him and the movie ends with a note conveying "The film is dedicated to all the people in the police department who fought and arrested those dacoits and we thank them for their bravery and courage". The note also states that "The officers involved in this case were not recognized by the government by providing any honorary awards neither were they promoted to higher posts".

            In 1279 A.D. the downfall of the Chola dynasty seems imminent as the Pandyas drive the Chola people out of their kingdom in southern India. To escape them and save the life of his successor the Chola emperor sends his son along with the Chola people to a secret territory. The refugees take along an idol sacred to the Pandyas, angering them. To capture the escaped Cholas and the stolen idol, the Pandyas extend their invasion to unexplored territories but cannot find them.Centuries later, in 2009, Indian archaeologists continue searching for the existence of the lost Chola group based on clues left by the ancient Pandyan warriors. All archaeologists who attempted to search for the secret land have disappeared. Archaeologist Chandramouli is the most recent person to have gone missing.The Indian government organizes a search expedition led by officer Anitha to find Chandramouli and the Chola empire; she is assisted by the Indian army led by Ravisekharan. They recruit archaeologist Lavanya, the estranged daughter of Chandramouli, because her insight is essential for the success of the expedition. She hands over crucial documents on the Chola dynasty, prepared by her father, with instructions on the route to reach the destination.Along with the army, Anitha employs a group of porters headed by Muthu, to transport the baggage during the journey. The crew embark on their voyage leading them to an island, Min-gua, near Vietnam. They face seven traps set by the Cholas: sea creatures, cannibals, warriors, snakes, hunger, quicksand and a village. Many porters and army men are killed by these traps.Muthu, Anitha and Lavanya get separated from the others. They reach the ruins of a village where they are subjected to black magic and nearly go mad before reaching the secret hideout of the Chola. The three find an ethnic isolated primitive Tamil group, ruled by a Chola king. The king and his people are in hiding, awaiting the arrival of the fabled messenger who will bring glory and prosperity back to their land and lead them back to Thanjavur, their motherland. The king and the priest consult the gods for omens and order Muthu, Anitha and Lavanya to be burnt alive as sacrifices.Anitha tells the king that she is the messenger sent from the homeland. Muthu and Lavanya are enslaved while Anitha is given a chance to prove herself. She tries to seduce and convince the Chola king to march towards the homeland in two days so he can be crowned a proper king. He suspects whether she is legitimate since none of Anitha's actions match ancestor's description. The ancestors wrote that the messenger will be preceded by hail and following his ill-treatment will eventually help the tribe.Meanwhile, Anitha drugs the priest and poisons the water sources. She catches a glimpse of the Pandyas' sacred idol and leaves, finally exposing her identity as a descendant of the Pandya Dynasty. For generations, her race has been trying to find the whereabouts of the Chola prince and his people. The central minister, who sponsors the expedition, is also shown to be a Pandyan. The Chola king is shattered for having believed in Anitha to be his true messenger. Anitha and Ravishekaran gather an army and assault the hidden kingdom. The king discover Muthu is the true messenger who would save the Cholas from the clutches of Anitha and the army.The Cholas fight bravely, but eventually lose and are taken prisoners. Their women are molested and raped by the army, the king is killed and the men drown in the seas. Muthu is able to escape and save the Chola prince. The seed of the Chola dynasty is brought back to India by the messenger as prophesied.

            Jeeva (Karthi) is a cool youth who lives life in his own way. A typical Chennai youngster, for him everything is his friends and fun. His father Jayaprakash (Jayaprakash), a call taxi driver showers all love and affection on him. They lead a simple life and derive happiness in whatever they do.One day, Jeeva comes across Priya (Kajal Agarwal) in a wedding ceremony.The wedding ceremony was of their mutual friends and Jeeva claims to be a failed love case and Priya falls for him and at first he doesn't tell her that he likes her but she already knows that she likes him. He plays hard to get until their mutual friend tells Priya that he likes you during a so called date they have. Jeeva gives more hope to Priya and tries to make her become more independent because even when she went to this so called date Priya brought her friend along. One day Jeeva goes up to Priya's father even when Priya begs him not to and says that they like each other. Jeeva eventually gets a good job because that is one of the requirements for him to marry Priya. Eventually Priya becomes acquainted with Jeeva's family and she starts to come over more and Jeeva's father accepts her because he understands that his son loves her and that she is a very nice girl.After few interesting encounters, they soon realize that they share a great rapport and propose to each other in their minds. When all seems to go well, a murder attempt on Jeeva's father disturbs everything.Jeeva's father had witnessed a girl being taken by a gang in his car. The girl gets killed and Jeeva's father decides to knock the doors of justice. Sensing trouble, the gang eventually murders him.The death of his father shatters Jeeva. He vows to take revenge on the killers. He sets out on a mission to identify the culprits and goes running around the town baying for their blood. How he avenges the killers forms the rest of the story.
