Cesur Ve Güzel

When he was six years old, one morning Hayati witnessed his father's suicide; his prison guard father hung himself on a walnut tree in the garden. Throughout his childhood, he questioned the reasons his father decided to take his own life and left him alone, and during this time, he withdrew and became isolated. Canalized into writing, Hayati received awards for his novella he wrote during his university years. After graduation, Hayati returns to his hometown and works as a literature teacher. On one hand, he tries to help his mother (Kadife) who is suffering from a terminal illness, while on the other hand; he tries to revive the dying dry walnut tree in the garden. Grumbling about not being able to write like before, Hayati has married to art teacher Yaprak with the insistence of his mother and his close friend Ahmet. Contrary of Hayati's wimpy and meek character, Yaprak has an ambitious and dominant character. Over time, incompatibilities and conflicts arise between them. Hayati is constantly the oppressed party due to his meek and passive character. His wife uses the psychologically problems as an excuse and files for divorce.Upon his research, Hayati arrives at new information about the suicide of his father. Due to some misunderstandings, his prison guard father didn't or maybe couldn't help his friend, who were unjustly tortured to death during the military coup. Later on, Hayati's father couldn't stand his guilty conscience and committed suicide. His father's dead friend is the father of no one other than Hayati's close friend Ahmet. These new facts Hayati learned about his father, the connection he established with the walnut tree and his father's remaining belongings, problems he has with his wife, and all these issues making Hayati the talk of the patriarchal town's people causes Hayati's mother Kadife to worry about him. Since she is afraid that Hayati might do something crazy like his father, she asks Ahmet to cut down the walnut tree. She has a sudden attack during the half-term school holiday and dies. The next night after the funeral, Hayati learns that Yaprak left town with the English teacher. When he goes home, he finds the note Yaprak left for him. While he tries to burn a painting left from Yaprak, curtains catch fire by accident. Hayati tries to put out the fire, but the living room burns down. Hayati goes to his Uncle Isa, whom he always visits.A few weeks later, an unidentified woman corpse is found in the lake. The body resembles Yaprak physically. The suspicions are concentrated on Hayati since no one heard from his wife for a long time. Despite knowing the corpse didn't belong to his wife, he takes the blame for the murder. In fact, Hayati has witnessed the killing of the unidentified woman by her ex-husband (in particular crimes committed against women) by the lake, but he felt guilty for not being able to help or for choosing not to help. Therefore, as much as he tries to escape Hayati repeats his father's fate.
