Lost in Austen


            Great Britain, 1953. Cold War lasts despite the summer. Stalin is dead, the British just finished celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, cinema halls are possessed by "The War of the Worlds".
30 years old Dora Szumski is an English woman married to a Polish immigrant Eryk. He is a former Polish Military officer for whom the existing power balance doesn't leave much choice. He can either be sentenced to death in his homeland or be an immigrant. After a failed suicide attempt he stays in Mabledon Park - a mental hospital for Polish ex-soldiers traumatized by the war.
Dora does not only sense what is the secret behind Eryk's illness. She also has some proofs... But the supervisor of the unit - Dr Lipman stops her from starting such serious talk with her husband. Dora, full of anxiety, drops her son Paul off at her sister's Sara and starts her old, worn-out motorcycle. We are following her trip into the heart of the mystery.
The unexpected encounter of spouses doesn't end in a hospital. Eryk runs away and turns up in a wayside inn rescuing his surprised wife from trouble. She wants her husband to immediately go back to the hospital, but finally agrees to go with him to the movies. Not aware of the deception, drugged with psycho-tropes she allows Eryk to kidnap her to a desolated sea shore.
It won't be just peaceful and romantic evening on the beach. Dora notices the disappearance of letters from her backpack, the ones which existence she hid from her husband after consulting with Dr Lipman. Photographs from Warsaw attached to letters proves that Eryk Szumski's Polish family survived the war and now, through Red Cross, they are looking for their older brother Roman. On the photos we can see a girl, a boy and a young, pretty woman... Eryk's fragile psyche cannot take such confrontation with facts. He gets a psychotic attack which turns into despair. Dora calms him with medicine, takes the motorcycle and goes to look for help. Words of a poem which she have found by Eryk are ringing in her head: "pity he was a liar... pity he was a traitor... her boy from the sea.."
Eryk, dazed, awaits her on the beach. His thoughts wander in other dimensions, filled with tragedy of a former soldier, father and husband. We quickly learn that this unusual couple is being sought by police. But the patient is not eager to go back to his hospital bed. To outwit a British policeman is a piece of cake for a Polish officer.
Meanwhile, the situation gets out of control. Dora's night telephone chat with Dr Lipman brings her closer to solving the mystery. Doctor reveals a story found in Eryk's diary that brings them into conclusion, that Eryk Szumski perished during the war and that the real name of our protagonist is Roman, Eryk's older brother. In September of 1939, as a Polish officer he was taken prisoner by Soviets. To avoid being executed, he took the uniform and the biography of his younger brother - a private from the same unit who was shot dead. Instead of being killed he gets to a labor camp and afterwards to the Anders Army. Now we find out that Roman is being sought by his Polish wife he was sure to be dead after the German bombing in Warsaw.
Full of forebodings, Dora heads to Sara's home but doesn't find there neither her sister nor little Paul. What she does find, is the already known poem, sketched hastily on a wall. She runs at full pelt to Szumski's house.
In front of the house we can see a parked police motorcycle with unconscious Sara handcuffed to the it. In a badly lit garage Dora faces the runaway Eryk-Roman to confirm who is in fact in the photos which were sent from Poland. In the background we can hear the police sirens.
But life has to go on, both in the post-war Poland as well as in Roman Szumski's the new homeland. Correspondence with Poland fades away with time and while being in Mabledon Park Szumski has a chance to put his two lives into one possible.
