The Fate of Lee Khan


            Choi returns from Chinese university to her village, wondering where the government will place her and what her life will be. She looks forward to the Preacher coming to the village and hopes he brings a miracle for her Grandma, who is ill.The cadre, the wealthiest and most influential man in the village intends to marry Choi, who says she is waiting to fall in love with someone younger and "whose ego is a bit less fed".When the preacher arrives he passes out sheets of paper to the villagers, who eagerly welcomed him.Choi takes Grandma to the Preacher's evening meeting, where he teaches them from his Bible. Choi finds herself wondering if this Bible can provide more insight on life than the evolutionary teachings from university. Cadre is seen observing the meeting from the outside.Choi's Father's Flashback of his Dreams:
He and his wife are being beaten until they confess to some unnamed act.Later, the preacher and Choi spend hours together. She uses her university training to pose very intelligent questions to the simple village preacher. She sits in and observes another church meeting.The next day the pastor from a nearby church arrive at Choi's house with the Cadre. They are looking for the local village preacher, accusing him of being a criminal and refusing to teach the government mandated doctrines. Grandma comes in, sees the visiting pastor, accuses him of being a government spy and insists he leave her house immediately, which he does. The strain of the visit causes Grandma to fall dead on the floor.At the gravesite, Choi notes to the Cadre that her Grandma's miracle didn't happen. When Cadre tells her that the government security forces are coming for the preacher, she insists she must go warn him, even at the expense of being seen as a traitor by the government. Cadre tries to convince Choi that if she does this, she will be throwing away everything that her father has worked so hard to get her, including her university education and "the good life". Choi questions that this is really the good life, just things. Cadre says "self" is all there is, dreaming for a color TV. Choi says there must be something higher.Choi runs to warn the preacher.[more to come]
