            The film opens with a sickly man, Bud (David Pendleton), wheezing and covered in boils. His daughter Sarah (Carmen Ejogo) gently talks to him wearing a gas mask, assuring him things will be okay. Afterwards, Carmen's husband Paul (Joel Edgerton) and their son Travis (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.) wheel Bud into the woods. Travis places a pillow over his grandfather's head and shoots him. Bud's body is dumped into an open grave, doused with lighter fluid, and set on fire.The family lives together with their dog Stanley, kept away from the rest of the world as it is implied that a fatal virus has devastated most of the country, and nobody knows what is really going on out there.Travis frequently experiences nightmares. He sees himself walking into a room in the house and seeing a sick, wheezing man on the bed. As Travis approaches him, the man shrieks. Travis wakes up, and his parents realize someone is trying to break into the house. A loud banging is heard at the door. Paul and Sarah grab their guns and head to the front. Paul gets ready as the assailant tries breaking the door open. He gets the door open, and Paul shoots at him but misses. It is a man named Will (Christopher Abbott). Paul orders him to drop his gun and get on the floor. He questions Will to know if there are other people outside. Will says no, and Paul knocks him out with the butt of his gun.Paul ties Will to a tree outside and puts a large sack over his head with tape on his mouth, leaving him yelling. This gives Travis another nightmare where he sees Will looking over at him with darkened eyes.After about a day, Paul carefully approaches Will by the tree and he takes the sack off. Paul offers Will water if he gives him honest answers, and he shows Will his gun in case he tries to pull anything. Will explains that he thought Paul's house was abandoned, and he only tried looking for water, food, or any supplies he could gather for his wife and child, who are several miles away. He claims to have seen nothing and nobody for 80 miles. Will also offers Paul some goats and chickens for food in exchange for help. Believing Will, Paul lets him have some water.Paul drives Will in a pickup to go look for his wife and child. While passing through the woods, Paul's truck is shot at. He grabs his gun and gets out of the car. He sees one man approaching and he shoots him dead. Will is beating up another man, and Paul tells him to get off. Will tells Paul not to shoot the man, but he does. Paul then asks if Will knew the men, but Will didn't. He wanted to keep the man alive to get information as to what's going on out there.The two return to the house with Will's wife Kim (Riley Keough) and their toddler son Andrew (Griffin Robert Faulkner). Paul and Sarah welcome the family into their home but lay down some rules so there won't be any problems.Both families carry on about their normal lives. They spend some time together eating or playing board games. Will and Kim frequently get intimate. Travis develops a crush on Kim and is seen listening in on her and Will's conversations. He has a dream where Kim walks into his room in her underwear. She mounts and kisses Travis, only to start spewing black bile into his mouth.Travis goes into the kitchen and finds Kim sitting there by herself. He startles her at first but they sit to have a conversation since they can't sleep. Kim mentions wishing she could have sweet foods but Travis says he doesn't like cupcakes or cookies or anything like that, which she finds to be sad.The next night, Stanley starts barking at something. The men go outside and try to find what is bothering the dog. Stanley runs further into the woods, still barking at something, with Travis chasing after him. Stanley eventually stops barking and disappears from sight. Paul scolds Travis for going off by himself.Later on, Travis finds Andrew in the living room lying on the floor. Andrew doesn't remember getting there. Travis takes the boy's hand and brings him back to his room. Suddenly, a thumping sound is heard in the house. Travis runs to tell his parents. Paul and Sarah grab their guns. Everyone looks in the kitchen and finds Stanley bleeding and weak. Knowing he is sick, Sarah takes Travis away while Paul mercy-kills Stanley. Travis hears the gunshot and starts crying. Paul burns Stanley's body too.Everyone sits down to discuss what has happened. Travis explains that he found Andrew and saw that the door between the kitchen and living room had already been opened before Stanley was found. Will and Kim get defensive when Travis asks if Andrew sleepwalks. When asked, Andrew says he doesn't remember getting out of bed. Paul then suggests that both families should just not interact with each other for a while. Paul later asks Travis about Andrew, and asks if he touched the boy. Travis says he only took his hand to guide him upstairs, but Paul is upset that Travis didn't use gloves, believing that the other family may be carrying the virus.Travis has another nightmare in which he is sick and covered in boils. He spits up bile and sees Bud sitting on the bed across from him, wheezing and with completely black eyes.In the morning, Andrew is heard coughing and whining. Paul knocks on Will and Kim's bedroom door to ask to come in and take a look at Andrew, with Sarah armed in the corner. When Will doesn't answer, Paul demands that he open the door or else he will break it down. Will complies but then takes Paul's gun and turns it on him, making him go inside. Holding Paul at gunpoint, Will says he only wants to get whatever supplies he can take and leave with Kim and Andrew. He threatens Paul if he goes near his family. Will takes Paul outside at gunpoint, and Sarah has hers aimed at Will. They agree to lower their guns, but Paul hits Will and takes his.Paul wheels Will away into the woods while Sarah has Kim at gunpoint. After Paul dumps Will, Will gets up and starts attacking Paul. He bashes Paul's head with a rock until Sarah shoots Will. Kim runs away with Andrew. Paul aims his gun at Kim and shoots. He ends up killing Andrew first. Kim screams in despair and yells at Paul to shoot her, which he does. Will slowly dies. Travis runs into the scene. Sarah notices Travis looks unwell. He drips fluid from his nose and he runs to the bathroom to throw up.After sometime, Travis is almost completely consumed by the virus. Sarah sits over him in the bed, trying to assure him things will be okay. We then see Travis walking through the corridor in his house with a lamp before going over to the window. Sarah tearfully tells Travis he can let go now, comforting him as he dies. Paul is in the other room alone, weeping.The last shot is of the now-infected Paul and Sarah sitting at the table in silence. They share a single shattered, devastated look before the film cuts to black.
    

It Comes at Night


            Laura Hall (Alicia Silverstone), separated from her writer husband, Richard (Richard Armitage), commits suicide after Richard informs her he plans to marry Grace Marshall (Riley Keough), a woman he met while researching a book about a fundamentalist Christian cult. Raised in the cult, Grace was the sole survivor of their mass suicide, led by her father, Aaron. Laura's death devastates her and Richard's children, teenage Aidan (Jaeden Lieberher) and young Mia (Lia McHugh).Six months later, Richard announces to his children at Thanksgiving that they will spend Christmas together with Grace at the family's remote lodge in rural western Massachusetts to get to know each other. That night, Aidan and Mia access their father's computer and uncover Grace's past, including disturbing video footage of the cult, showing each of the deceased followers draped in purple silk with a strip of duct tape across their mouths reading "Sin."Several days before Christmas, the four arrive at the lodge, where the children act openly hostile toward Grace and refuse efforts to bond with her. When Richard departs back to the city for a work obligation, the children continue to act abrasively toward her. Grace's unease is compounded by the abundance of Catholic iconography in the cabin, which causes her to have nightmares about her father. Tensions rise after Grace catches Aidan watching her shower. However, after being reprimanded, Aidan softens and one night prepares Grace a cup of cocoa while she and Mia watch movies.In the morning, Grace awakens to discover that all of her belongings- including her clothing, psychiatric medication, and pet dog- are missing. The food has also disappeared from the cabin, as well as Christmas decorations she put up the day before. The generator has gone out, leaving all of their cell phones dead. Grace suspects the children have prank-ed her, but finds their belongings missing as well. She notices the clocks in the house have advanced to January 9th. A tearful Aidan tells Grace that he dreamed a gas heater in the living room malfunctioned and they all suffocated, and expresses fear that they may be in the afterlife.Over the following several days, Grace - succumbing to anxiety, medication withdrawal, hunger, and cold - begins sleep walking, and is tormented by disturbing visions and dreams, including the recurrent voice of her father sermonizing. She attempts to walk to the nearest town, discovering a cross-shaped cabin where she sees her father beckoning to her from inside. She eventually travels in a circle, taking her back to the lodge. Buried in the snow, she discovers a photo of Aidan and Mia in a memorial frame, and inside, finds the children frantically praying over a newspaper article detailing the deaths of all three from carbon monoxide poisoning on December 22nd. Aidan hysterically insists they are in purgatory, and hangs himself in the attic as proof that they are dead, only to inexplicably survive.Grace suffers a nervous breakdown, which intensifies when she finds her dog frozen to death outside. She then enters a catatonic state on the porch. Worried she might die of exposure, the children finally admit to Grace that they have been gas-lighting her the entire time, having drugged her, hidden their possessions in a crawlspace, and played recordings of her father's sermons at night via a wireless speaker. Mia has been calling Richard daily so that he will not suspect something is wrong. With their own phones dead at last, the children unsuccessfully attempt to start the generator and bring Grace her medication, but find her now completely insane.... wholly convinced that they are in purgatory and must do penance to ascend to heaven.That night, the children find Grace self-flagellating by burning herself on the hearth. They barricade themselves in the attic, but are confronted by Grace in the morning, who insists they must "sacrifice something for the Lord." Richard returns to discover an inconsolable Grace brandishing his pistol. In an attempt to prove her belief that they are in purgatory, she fires the gun at him, killing him. Aidan and Mia attempt to flee in the car, but get stuck in the snow. Grace forces the children back into the lodge, where she seats them at the dinner table with their father's corpse and sings "Nearer, My God, to Thee." She then affixes pieces of duct tape reading "sin" to each of their mouths before contemplating the gun to kill them....
    

The Lodge


            In December 2004, Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright), a writer who studies wolf behavior, is summoned to the small village of Keelut, Alaska by Medora Slone (Riley Keough), who wants Core to hunt down the wolves blamed for the disappearances and presumed deaths of three small children, including Medora's 6-year-old son, Bailey.Core, staying at the Slone house, discusses the missing children with Medora, who tells him of a hot springs to the north of town. That night, he awakes to the sound of Medora whispering and bathing. She exits the bathroom with a dark wooden wolf mask and approaches Core. Removing the mask, she lies beside Core and moves his hand to her neck forcefully.Medora's husband, Vernon Slone (Alexander Skarsgård), is overseas in Iraq, where he is shown mercilessly and efficiently gunning down Iraqi militants. While stationed at a checkpoint, Vernon wanders off and comes across an American soldier raping a local woman. Vernon stabs the soldier and leaves the woman with his knife to finish him off. Moments later, shooting breaks out at the checkpoint: Vernon is shot but survives to be sent home.In the morning, Core leaves town to track the wolves and meets an old native woman, Illanaq, who tells him he is going the wrong way, and that Medora 'knows evil'. Core tracks the wolves, coming across the hot springs Medora mentioned, and spots a pack of wolves eating their young. Unwilling to shoot them, Core returns to Keelut. At the Slone house, he finds Medora missing, and the cellar door unlocked. Downstairs, Core finds Bailey's frozen, strangled body, and calls for help. The police investigate, and the native villagers claim Medora is possessed by a wolf-demon called a tournaq.Vernon's old friend and father to another missing child, Cheeon (Julian Black Antelope), meets him at the airport and drives him to meet with police chief Donald Marium (James Badge Dale), Core, and several other officers at the morgue. After Core and Marium leave, Vernon shoots the remaining officers and the coroner. Vernon and Cheeon then take Bailey's body and bury it in a pine box, marking it with symbols in their blood. Vernon then returns to Keelut and kills Illanaq.Core, remembering the woman's prescient warning, and the police, following up on the murdered officers, arrive in Keelut at the same time. Marium and a few dozen officers take up positions outside Cheeon's house as the chief approaches to ask about his involvement with the murders. Cheeon, who refuses to come quietly, later opens up barn doors on the upper level of his house, and fires on the clustered police with an M60 machine gun, killing many. Marium flanks the building and shoots Cheeon from the inside.At an inn outside a tourist mine where Medora was sighted, Vernon meets John, an elderly hunter, who treated Vernon as a child for his seeming psychopathy with wolf-oil. The hunter invites Vernon to take a mask, saying he "needs to let the wolf out a little." Vernon chooses a mask from the wall, puts it on and kills John. As he leaves, Vernon is shot in the shoulder by the innkeeper, leading him to visit an old friend, Shan, who pulls the bullet from his shoulder.Core and Marium theorize that Medora killed Bailey to save him from darkness. Core recalls Medora's saying the nearby hot springs are "a good place to get clean" and thinks she might have gone there. They agree to go after Medora and try to catch her before Vernon does.Vernon, meanwhile, has a dream of himself and Medora in the hot springs. Now awake, he overhears Shan's informing the police of his presence. Vernon puts on the mask and stabs Shan in the head. The police force splits up, half going to the crime scene at Shan's house, and Marium and Core going to the hot springs.While looking at some wolf tracks in the snow, Marium is shot through the neck by an arrow fired by Vernon, who is wearing the mask. Core leaves Marium's body and heads to the hot springs, hoping to intercept Vernon. He finds Medora there, and is then arrowed in the chest by Vernon.As Vernon strangles her, Medora pushes the mask off his face. He releases her and they embrace. Core falls unconscious.After Core wakes, Vernon removes the arrow from Core's body before leaving with Medora. Core crawls outside the cave, encountering a pack of wolves. He is found by a father and son with a snowmobile and brought to their home for care, as Vernon's mother looks on. Vernon is seen digging up Bailey's grave with Medora; they pull the coffin along with them as they trek through the snow. Core wakes up in hospital, his daughter Amy at his bedside.
    

Hold the Dark


            Dr. Martin Ploeck (Played by Orlando Bloom), who has spent his life looking for respect, meets an 18-year-old patient named Diane, suffering from a kidney infection, and gets a much-needed boost of self-esteem. However, when her health starts improving, Martin fears losing her, so he begins tampering with her treatment, keeping Diane sick and in the hospital right next to him.

            Diane is a young, blond British teenage girl who experiences chronic nosebleeds. She checks herself in a mirror and she is transformed into a monster before falling unconscious. Earlier...Diane walks in the streets of New York trying to borrow cellphone in order to call her twin sister Karen to ask for a ride home. As to no avail, she enters a clothing store and asks to use a phone. There, she meets a dark-haired lesbian of her age, Jack, who is clearly smitten by Diane. Diane's nose starts bleeding again and Jack gives her a hand.Jack then takes Diane to a night club. When they get there, Diane seems nauseous and a lot of blood is shed more from her nose and she goes to the restroom. This scene is parallel to as the beginning of the film. She gains unconsciousness and meets up with Jack and the girls ferociously kiss each other on a couch in the nightclub lounge.The next morning, the girls part ways and Jack is uncritically hit by a car. Back at Diane's apartment, she is reprimanded by her stern aunt Linda and tells her she is grounded. Diane strikes back by telling her she's not her mother. Both of the girl feels misunderstood back in their homes. Jack comes home from the hospital and spats with her neglectful mother. Nevertheless, Diane visits Jack in her home. Jack confides with Diane about her sentimental cassette tape from her late brother. Another day later, Jack visits Diane in her home where the girls get into an argument when Linda intentionally tells Jack about Diane leaving for school in France.After Jack leaves her, Diane suffers from desolation and she starts to unravel. Meanwhile, Jack hangs out with a lesbian, Tara, whom she works with. They have an intimate moment but Jack rebuffs her shortly after. The next day, Diane hangs out with one of Jack's friends, named Chris, and Jack is startled. The girls play a game as to whoever wins would either leave or stay. Jack wins and Diane is forced to go home. Jack gets back to Chris where he finds a video of Diane's sister Karen getting raped in an adult website. Feeling sorry for her sister, Jack finally reconciles with Diane in her home.Over the next few days, the girls finally spend much time romantically with one another. One night, Jack has a dream of Diane transforming into a monster and devouring her heart. She wakes up only to find Diane on her side with blood gushing out of her nose. As days are narrowed down before Diane would leave for school, the bond between the two girls starts to turn debilitated.One day, the girls go to a hotel swimming pool to swim and while in the locker room, and the lights suddenly go off. Afraid of the dark, Jack seeks help from Diane whom she had given a polaroid camera before the lights went off. The couple are separated and Diane searches for Jack by flashing through her camera. She encounters the same monster from earlier, and she is found sobbing by Jack. The two girls console each other, finally letting go of their fears. Jack goes to see Diane on her last day before she departs for school and the girl's relationship is compromised.A few weeks later in Paris, France, Diane receives a gift from Jack and reveals it to be the cassette tape. She turns the song on and listens to it profoundly, reminiscing about her encounter with Jack.
