            In the middle of the Depression, John Walton is working in a mill, fifty miles away on Christmas Eve while his family prepares for his return. The children bring the cow back to the barn from the fields. John-boy, the eldest, tells the others they may not want to wait in the barn at midnight to hear the animals talk. They each carry wood for the fire back to the house. John's father Ebenezer can feel a storm coming in his bones, but his wife Olivia brings her blooming Christmas cactus from the basement. She tells the children she married their daddy because they were in love, but her family didn't approve of him due to religious differences. She heads to the store to buy sugar for her famous applesauce cake. As the children crack walnuts, they discuss their Christmas lists. Mary Ellen, thirteen years old, throws a tantrum, and John-boy tries to explain the Depression. The youngest girl, Elizabeth, announces that when she grows up, she's going to have puppies instead of babies.At the store, Olivia meets Hawthorne Dooley, an itinerant preacher. He tells her he's working for the Baldwin sisters. She disapproves as the sisters are known bootleggers, but Dooley points out that work is work. She also meets the sisters themselves, who explain that their still has broken and they hope John Walton can fix it. The Depression has not hit the sisters nearly as hard as the rest of the neighborhood. As she admires the dolls at the store, she discusses her worries about John's return with the shopkeeper, Ike Godsey. John will have to take the bus and then walk a long way. Ike tries to sell Olivia a doll for her youngest and suggests she buy it on credit, but she tells him she has never bought anything without being able to pay for it in her life. As she leaves she runs into the sheriff, Ep Bridges, who tells her he also hasn't seen her husband. Ep tells the shopkeeper he is searching for the Robin Hood Bandit, who is stealing food for the poor from local markets. He suspects Ike knows who the culprit is.At home, grandmother and grandfather try to tune in a Pittsburgh radio station as Olivia walks in. They hear on the radio that a bus has overturned on the highway, and they fear that John was on the bus. Grandmother suggests they need a telephone, and Olivia says it will be the first thing she gets when the Depression is over.She calls John-boy down from his room, where he has locked the door, to her consternation. She sends John-boy and Ebenezer out to cut a tree and tells the girls to help her with the cake, "women's work". John-boy and Ebenezer discuss the family history on Walton Mountain as they search for a tree.As they trim the tree, the children argue about the decorations and break one. John-boy shouts at them and his mother comes in and tells him to hold his temper - as the oldest, it's his responsibility to keep the others in line. Mary Ellen has a real nest with an egg in it that she wants to put on the tree, but the others make fun of it. Mary Ellen calls them all pissants.Charlie Sneed comes in with a turkey as a present for the family, telling them he shot it up on the mountain. Grandmother is suspicious of his story, but Olivia is thrilled to have a turkey for the table and doesn't ask too many questions. Mary Ellen comes out to watch John-boy milk the cow, and they discuss growing up, dating, and kissing while the rest of the family listens to Fibber McGee and Molly.Claudie Dooley knocks on the door to tell them a lady has come to hand out presents to the children, but Olivia forbids it as her family has never accepted charity. Ebenezer convinces her to let them go although they may not accept presents. The lady is a missionary, and she has them sing Christmas carols and recite Bible verses before they can have presents. The Walton children whisper verses to other children so they can get their presents. They give Elizabeth a verse as well. She gets a porcelain doll, but the head is cracked and broken and they leave it behind as they return home.John-boy writes in his diary about the day's events. The grandparents and Olivia discuss his secretive habits, and the radio announces that one person has died in the bus accident. Olivia goes to John-boy and asks him about his locked door. He admits having a diary because he wants to be a writer. He's worried because his father wants him to take up a trade. She sends him to ask Charlie Sneed to drive out and try to find John, and gives him a dollar for gas. She gives him the scarf she'd knitted him for Christmas - the only present he would be getting.When John-boy reaches the store, he finds Charlie handcuffed by the sheriff and loudly proclaiming his innocence, although his car is half full of stolen goods. He lets John-boy take the car himself as he has driven the old DeSoto around the family farm. As John-boy drives and worries that he is a disappointment to his father, the car runs out of gas. Nearby, Hawthorne Dooley is running a Christmas service and John-boy watches the children sing "Mary, What You Gonna Name that Pretty Little Baby?" As Santa enters, John-boy asks Dooley for help and he recommends heading to the Baldwin's place.They are ushered in as the sisters are decorating their tree. John-boy is impatient to ask them for gas, but the sisters are excited to have company and they sit and visit for a spell. Emily tells a story of her lost beau and they play a record on the Victrola. Dooley leads them in a round of "Throw out the lifeline" and eventually they all head out on the search in a one-horse open sleigh.The search is halted when a fallen tree blocks the road. John-boy is adamant that he needs to continue the search, but Dooley insists that he return home as his family will need him, especially if anything has happened to John.When John-boy returns home, Olivia, now rather panic-stricken, yells at him for gallivanting and accuses him of bringing whiskey into her house. Ebenezer heads out to ring the church bells. John-boy offers to take the children to the barn to hear the Christmas miracle of the animals speaking. He starts to retell them the legend when the door opens and in walks John.Olivia offers to get him coffee as an excuse to cry in private. He explains that he'd had to hitchhike as far as Hickory Creek and walk the rest of the way. Then he tells a story about scaring Santa away and grabbing a sack of presents from his sleigh. Elizabeth gets her doll and the others get things they've been wanting as well. Olivia gets a bouquet of flowers. John-boy gets a stack of tablets to practice his writing.

            In this psychological thriller, a very pregnant Francesca (Patty Duke) travels from Los Angeles to the small town of Dulwich, Minnesota to meet her late husband's mother, Mrs. Kinsolving, whom she has never met before. Upon arriving at the Kinsolving Manor, a large mansion that sits on the outside of town, Mrs. Kinsolving (Rosemary Murphy) is cold to Francesca. She questions whether Francesca is actually pregnant with her son's baby. She also tells Francesca that she wants nothing to do with her or her baby in the future. It soon becomes clear that Francesca cannot leave that night as a blizzard has made the roads impassable. Francesca is forced to stay in the Kinsolving mansion for a few days. She soon begins to suspect that something is amiss due to inconsistencies in information between what her late husband (Matthew) told her and Mrs. Kinsolving's statements to her.While Matthew never mentioned he had a sister, Mrs. Kinsolving claims that the mentally challenged and non-verbal Kathleen (Sian Barbara Allen) is Matthew's sister. After Mrs. Kinsolving retires for the night, Francesca sneaks around and discovers in the family bible that Matthew's mother (whose name is Maria) died 11 days after Matthew was killed in the Vietnam War out of shock after receiving the death certificate. Mrs. Kinsolving is actually Matthew's aunt, Maria's sister, Katherine, who is Kathleen's mother and the mother of Kenny (Richard Thomas), a serial rapist and murderer who is hiding somewhere in the Kinsolving mansion a fugitive from the local authorities.The following day, Francesca goes into labor, but Mrs. Kinsolving refuses to call for an ambulance. She sedates Francesca heavily. When the baby is born, Mrs. Kinsolving announces it is dead and hands the baby over to Kathleen to bury.That night, Kathleen rouses Francesca and takes her to the attic where she finds Kathleen has hidden her baby in a picnic basket. The baby is very much alive. Mrs. Kinsolving, suspecting Francesca is sneaking around the mansion, locks her in her room. Kathleen is able to locate the key to the room and unlocks it, allowing Francesca to care for her baby.Another night later, Francesca secretly spies the unsuspecting Kenny who is hiding in the basement laundry room. She overhears his conversation with Mrs. Kinsolving, and it is menacing. Meanwhile, Mrs. Kinsolving discovers that the family bible has been opened to the page detailing the date of Maria Kinsolving's death. Mrs. Kinsolving informs Kenny that Francesca knows Maria is dead, but does not think she is aware that Kenny is hiding in the mansion. The next morning, Mrs. Kinsolving announces that the blizzard has cleared enough for a driver to take Francesca into town to take the bus back to Los Angeles.At breakfast, the driver arrives.... and it is Kenny. Francesca quickly tells Mrs. Kinsolving that she left her gloves in her third floor room and she needs to retrieve them. Instead she gets her baby from the attic, hides the baby under her coat and flees the mansion. However, Mrs. Kinsolving spots Francesca running away and yells for Kenny to get her. He takes chase and Kathleen notices. Francesca sees Kenny is quickly gaining ground, and she darts into the carriage house in an attempt to elude him. He locates her, they struggle, and he knocks Francesca unconscious. The baby slips from under her coat. Kenny smiles sadistically and covers the crying baby's face with his hand. Suddenly, Kathleen sneaks up behind him and stabs him in the back with a pair of scissors. The film ends with Mrs. Kinsolving cradling her dead son as Kathleen and Francesca, holding her baby, look on.
    

You'll Like My Mother


            At 22, Laura Black seems to have it made. After graduating UC-Davis in engineering, she leaves her parents' home in Virginia to head for KEI Systems, a Silicon Valley hi-tech firm specializing in defense contracting for the armed services. On the first day at her new job, her supervisor, Chris, introduces her to Richard Farley, a software engineer employed in a division outside Laura's. After lunch that day, Richard invites Laura to a tractor pull, which she turns down. Farley appears to think nothing of it at first, but the worst is yet to come.Laura soon finds a roommate & starts settling in at KEI, during which Farley continues to offer his attentions with nothing more harmful than baked blueberry bread, sitting in Laura's office awaiting her arrival at 7 a.m. But when Laura gets involved with the company's aerobics classes, Farley can soon be seen stealthily watching from outside. While at a company softball game, Farley approaches Laura & asks to go out later to 'discuss the terms of our relationship'. Laura angrily chews him out and insists there is no 'relationship', other than a professional one. Her best friend, Glenda Moritz, tells Laura if Farley is becoming a problem she should address it with management, after which she cracks a joke and the two of them start laughing. Farley takes personal offense but keeps his distance.That week, Farley angrily approaches Laura at work with a gift. She angrily refuses, but Farley refuses to leave until it's opened. When Laura opens it, she discovers a toy bulldozer, after which Farley sneers, 'if you act like a child, I'll have to treat you like one', and accuses Laura of making 'childish, silly faces' at him during the game. Using a ruse, Farley tricks an HR employee into unwittingly giving him Laura's address. The notes then begin to arrive, either at work or Laura's home. When her roommate urges Laura to act on Farley's implied threats & menacing, Laura brushes it off - until a few days later when the two of them come out to go to work & discover the tires on Laura's VW Cabriolet slashed. Reporting to work late, Laura is immediately confronted by Farley, who menaces her with a veiled threat - 'Either you must live in a bad neighborhood or someone's trying to make you pay attention.' He then goes on to offer to help Laura pick out new tires - even to pay for them. She ignores him & walks into work, after warning him that police had advised her to get a restraint order. Farley then threatens her again. Even when not threatening her, his presence is menacing, such as when he snaps photographs of her in her driveway.After this, Laura goes to her HR department to complain about Farley's unending harassment, but is met with stonewalling. It is apparent the company values Farley's security clearance over Laura's right to be free from harassment, but Penny, the HR manager, agrees to talk to Farley and order him to stay away from Laura. Farley takes the advice to heart, but only at work - he soon enrolls in the aerobics classes Laura attends, and then follows her home afterwards. He also corners her at a gas station, forcing her to flee in a panic. Even when Richard's landlady, Nancy - who he also works with - tells him Laura isn't interested in him, Farley continues to find ways to get to her. Exasperated, Laura tells her roommate she is moving out, but her roommate insists on going with her. The two of them find a new apartment that is in a gated community and apparently much more private.Frustrated by Laura's efforts to stop or avoid him, Farley stealthily breaks into Laura's office at work after hours and obtains access to her security clearance application. By doing so, he obtains the addresses and names of her parents in Virginia, and her two sisters - one in Oregon & one in South California - in addition to Laura's new home address. The fiendish Farley then confronts Laura at work the next day, but when she threatens to call the police, he reveals how much he knows about her family, even events in her life that happened a decade before. He then threatens to go after one of Laura's sisters - or even her mother - if Laura tries to run. Angry & frightened, Laura asks Farley what his intentions are - and why. His response is, 'All I know is, you and I were meant to be together - FOREVER'.By this point, Laura has simply had enough. At her parents' home for Christmas in Virginia, a package arrives for her from California. Knowing she doesn't have anyone else there, Laura opens it - and to her horror, inside is an album titled 'Our summer vacation', with a doctored photograph of Farley and Laura's face superimposed on someone else. Laura breaks down in tears, and tells her family the story of the last six months of harassment she has endured at Farley's hands. Her father angrily volunteers to fly out and make the HR people listen, but Laura talks him out of it & vows to address it herself.Following the holidays, Laura goes back to HR and angrily confronts the manager, but the response is the same - they are more worried about jeopardizing his security clearance. Penny does, however, agree to restrict his access to keep him away from her. Farley is also ordered to attend counseling under threat of termination.Not long after, Laura goes out to a bar with some of her girlfriends, where she meets Sam Waters - an engineer who works for another company. He asks her out, and she agrees. After being questioned by her girlfriends about the handsome young engineer, Laura heads for the bathroom, where she is immediately accosted by the now-menacing Farley. He angrily berates her for getting him in trouble with HR, and then shows his violent side while continuing to threaten her if she does not give in to his demands. He leaves with a chilling message - 'This could escalate, Laura. I might scare us both with what I'm capable of doing.'Immediately after, Farley is hauled into a meeting with Penny and a management official, who find that Farley simply refuses to accept that his harassment is illegal and could lead to firing. Emphasizing they want him to stay, Penny tells him in no uncertain terms that his behavior must cease. Farley then levels a veiled threat at Penny, saying that he has guns, would commit suicide, and that 'others would go'. When Penny asks if he is threatening to kill her, he replies simply, 'Yes - not just you. I'd take others as well', before getting up & walking out. Penny is clearly frightened by this threat, but she wastes no time in terminating him with management's approval.Next day, Chris looks up & sees Farley coming down the hall. He motions to Laura, who glances up to see her nemesis being escorted off the property by security with the contents of his desk in a box. As he passes, Penny comes in, and tells them that Farley has been terminated by KEI, effective immediately. She suggests Laura get out of town for a few days, which Laura does.Unfortunately, the harassment did not end with Farley's termination. He soon finds a similar position with another company, and is quickly up to his old tricks of sending menacing letters and again showing up at KEI. When Laura protests, she finds out the company refused to terminate Farley for harassment but rather for performance issues. Laura is furious - again the company has put Farley's interest ahead of hers.Even when Laura is out on a date with Sam, Farley shows up at their restaurant but does not approach them. Sam angrily gets up to confront Farley, but Laura talks him out of it. He warns Laura that she HAS to take Farley's menacing conduct more seriously, and teaches her how to use his 9-mm semiautomatic in self-defense. Laura is apprehensive, but Sam insists - with a promise he will pick it up the following day if it really bothers her. Laura agrees, kisses him goodnight, and goes to get ready for bed. Hearing a noise in the garage, Laura finds Farley in it, leaving a note on her car. She has the gun at the ready behind her back if he approaches, but he leaves without approaching her.
Laura soon comes up for promotion at work, but her security clearance has not come through. Chris tells her Farley is probably the reason behind it, and encourages her to get a restraining order - which she reluctantly agrees to do. Farley is served with a temporary restraining order at his workplace, and Laura soon finds out that she will have a court date later in the week to make the restraining order permanent.Farley proceeds to a gun shop & purchases a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition. He also buys a huge motorhome and starts making his way to Laura's workplace, planning to wait for her to get off work. Unaware Farley is on his way, Laura phones her dad, and tells him about the pending court date the following day. Once Farley arrives, he arms himself with a Benelli shotgun, a .22 Magnum pistol, a semiautomatic 9-mm handgun, a Ruger M-77 rifle, and his new 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun. Stepping out of the motorhome, he calmly walks up to the front entrance of the KEI building. As he approaches, he meets Lawrence Kane, another man with whom he had previously worked. Kane whispers under his breath, 'You can't be serious', when he sees Farley, but Farley simply says, 'Cowboys and Indians!', then blasts Kane at point-blank range with the shotgun, sending him backwards onto a parked car and killing him. As another car approaches Farley, he blasts the car with the shotgun, missing the driver, who quickly retreats. Then Farley fires the shotgun into the plate-glass front doors and marches into the building, shooting at any moving target. As he makes his way up the stairs, he encounters a man coming down, and quickly guns him down with the Mossberg shotgun. Software engineer Helen Lamparter, a friend of Laura's, hears the shooting and runs to the man's side. Farley, halfway up the stairs, turns the shotgun on her and kills her instantly. Making his way to the 2nd floor, Farley kills newlywed 23-year-old Wayne 'Buddy' Williams with the shotgun and continues making his way across the floor. Hearing the shots, Laura's best friend Glenda Moritz comes out of her office - right into Farley's path! Glenda pleads for her life, but the psychopathic Farley levels the Mossberg at her and fires a single round, sending her crashing through the door and backwards into her office, fatally wounded. He then heads for Laura's office, where he ambushes her and seriously wounds her with a shotgun blast to the shoulder. Laura drops to the floor, appearing dead, so Farley leaves her office after he hears voices in the hallway behind him. As employees flee the building, the first police car arrives and officers quickly conceal themselves outside the main doors. Upstairs, Farley attacks 2 men who are making a run for it. Killing the first one with a shot to the back, he wounds the second in the stomach, but the man attempts to escape again. Cornering the man, Farley fatally wounds him with a second shotgun blast to the stomach.By now, the officer in command, Captain Olson, has arrived, and is assuming the worst. But even as employees are evacuated from the building, Olson's second-in-command spots Laura's old supervisor, Chris, running into the building. Officers are unable to stop him as he runs inside & up the stairs.Laura, meanwhile, has desperately tried to dial 911, but finding the line busy, improvises a bandage from a sweater to staunch the bleeding from the gaping shotgun wound in her upper arm. Fleeing her office, she comes across the body of one of the men shot in the back while escaping, and can hear Farley blasting away at the computers & hardware with his shotgun and .22 Magnum pistol. Farley returns to Laura's office, but finding her gone, starts hunting the second floor for her.Outside, the SWAT team has arrived, led by Lt. Bannister. They are quickly filled in by Captain Olson and a command post is set up in an adjacent building. The SWATs are informed of Farley's military history and prepare for what they are likely dealing with. Olson also is informed that Laura - Farley's motive for the shootings - is still trapped in the building. Lt. Ruben Grijalva, a hostage negotiator, also arrives and is filled in by Captain Olson. It isn't long before Farley contacts Grijalva and contemptuously sneers that he plans to 'gloat for a while' and 'would rather kill people than animals - it's not sporting to kill animals'.Laura continues to try to find a way out - and as she does, she passes by Glenda's office. She looks in to discover a horrific scene; her best friend Glenda is fatally wounded by Farley's shotgun blast, and Laura makes her way to the 2nd floor reception area, hiding to conceal herself from Farley as she can still hear the shotgun & pistol. She soon gets into the HR office where 2 women, holed up inside, try to stop the bleeding from Laura's shoulder. After several minutes, though, Laura flees the office, determined not to die, and hides under a desk in a room adjacent to where Farley is talking to police.Lt. Bannister argues for a 3-pronged attack, but Capt. Olson vetoes it as he fears the risk is too great. Laura, calling what she thinks is security's number, reaches Lt. Grijalva and advises him of her injuries. The lieutenant advises her to keep talking in the hope she will not pass out from blood loss, but eventually she does.Regaining consciousness, Laura calls Lt. Grijalva back. He informs her there is no way to send in rescuers to help her; she will have to sit tight. Hearing Farley blasting through the door, Laura hangs up the phone & hides under the desk just as Farley enters the room. The fiend spots the SWAT team moving up towards his position, and contacts Lt. Grijalva and threatens to start detonating explosives unless the SWATs are called off. Capt. Olson calls them off, and Farley continues to rant to Grijalva about his 'persecution' by KEI and Laura's angry rejection of him, refusing to acknowledge any role his conduct might have had. Hearing him in the same room, Laura uses the opportunity to slip through a destroyed security door and down a back staircase to the main floor, where she emerges from the main entrance into the hands of the SWAT team. Lt. Bannister & 2 SWATs help Laura to an ambulance, and she is raced to the hospital. When Laura arrives, she is immediately sent to surgery to repair her damaged shoulder & stop the bleeding. Farley, meanwhile, continues to negotiate with Lt. Grijalva, initially insisting that 'I'm gonna die here, and I'M going to decide when'. He does, however, ask for a diet cola & sandwich from Togo's, which Lt. Grijalva agrees to in return for Farley throwing some of his weapons out one of the building windows. Lt. Bannister offers to have a SWAT sniper take Farley out, but Grijalva argues to try to get Farley to surrender first. Capt. Olson agrees, on the condition that if Farley is unwilling to surrender - 'Get him in front of a window.' Lt. Grijalva agrees, and gets the sandwich & diet cola that Farley requested. When it arrives, Lt. Grijalva points out to Farley that even once he throws out the weapons, there is still the problem of getting the food to Farley. Farley acknowledges this, and Grijalva suggests that he surrender himself. Farley is initially skeptical, but Lt. Grijalva persuades him that he could teach computers in prison. After a few minutes, Farley agrees and emerges from the buliding, into the hands of the SWATs and Capt. Olson's second-in-command, Lt. Shagan. Shagan promptly cuffs Farley and reads him his rights, and as Farley is walked to a police car Grijalva appears with the food Farley had requested. Putting the food in the front of the car, Grijalva watches as the police car drives slowly away with Farley. The film ends with the final outcome of the real-life case: Richard Farley was found guilty of 7 counts of capital murder, and is awaiting the death sentence in San Quentin prison. Laura Black, after 7 major surgeries, regained some use of her shoulder, and as of filming was still working for the company. Following Laura's case - and other tragic stalking cases - the state of California became the first to pass an anti-stalking law.

            On September 30, 1955 in Conway, Arkansas, University of Central Arkansas student Jimmy J. (Richard Thomas) watches the film 'East of Eden' in a movie theater alone. The next day at football practice, Jimmy J. hears that the actor and star of the film, James Dean, has been killed. He runs to the local radio station and confirms that the actor died in an automobile crash in California the day before (around the same time he was watching 'East of Eden' in the opening scene).Jimmy J. calls his friend Billie Jean Turner (Lisa Blount), a working-class girl who also admires Dean, to commiserate. He then leads his girlfriend Charlotte Smith (Deborah Benson), his roommate Hanley (Tom Hulce), and another college couple, Frank (Dennis Quaid) and his girlfriend Pat (Mary Kai Clark), on an off-campus adventure. They order a takeout barbecue meal and Jimmy J. steals a few bottles of liquor from a store. They evade the police and have a party near the Arkansas River, where Jimmy J. grows upset that his friends do not understand the depth of his grief. When Frank asks how Jimmy J. can care so much about someone he has never met, Jimmy J. explains that he has seen 'East of Eden' four times, and Billie Jean claims to have seen it 22 times; they were anticipating the releases of James Dean's other two films, 'Rebel Without a Cause' later in October and 'Giant' the following year, Jimmy J. and Billie Jean met seeing 'East of Eden' a few months earlier, and though Charlotte claims Billie Jean presents no competition, she has asked Jimmy J. not to see her.Later that afternoon, Jimmy J. sculpts an Academy Award statuette out of mud, strips to his underwear, smears himself with mud, and conducts a ceremony to summon Dean's spirit. A dog barks in the distance and Jimmy J. perceives the bark as a sign. The police arrive, but the group escapes and heads back to town. When Frank and Pat are dropped off, they tell Jimmy J. that he is disturbed. When Jimmy J. asks Charlotte if he can continue the seance at her house since her parents are not home, she invites him and Hanley to visit once Jimmy J. is cleaned up.Returning to the dormitory, Jimmy J. is surprised to see his mother (Collin Wilcox), his Aunt Ethel, and his little brother, Dickie, who have come to take him to a show in Little Rock. Jimmy J's mother is disappointed by his dirty appearance and worries that he will end up a loser and deadbeat like his father. In the dormitory, as others prepare for a fraternity dance that evening, Jimmy J. calls Billie Jean and invites her to Charlotte's for the seance.Coach Haynes (Ben Fuhrman) awaits Jimmy J. in his room and disciplines him for leaving football practice that morning. A classmate named Eugene (Dennis Christopher) asks Jimmy J. and Hanley if he may accompany them to Charlotte's house for the seance and the three escape out a side door as the state police, called by Frank and Pat, arrive. The three young men escape from the building just as a college dance is starting to be held. They drive to Billie Jean's house and once inside, Jimmy J. finds Billie Jean in her room dressed like the character Vampira, wearing heavy makeup and a black cape. She attempts to seduce Jimmy J., and when he rebuffs her, she tells him that James Dean would not have pulled away.Charlotte is not pleased when the three young men arrive at her parents house with Billie Jean. Despite Charlotte's protests, Billie Jean darkens the room, lights candles, and clears the furniture. When Charlotte and Jimmy J. are alone, she says she suspects that something is going on between him and Billie Jean. Jimmy J. admits he is untrustworthy, like his father, but he has not had sex with Billie Jean. Later, the group uses a Ouija game board to contact Dean, but only Jimmy J. and Billie Jean feel his presence. Charlotte goes to another room and Billie Jean kisses Jimmy J. passionately. Hanley suggests he join in, and Jimmy J. is outraged that his friend would show such a lack of respect for the moment. Jimmy J. realizes that the college dance is over and Frank and Pat are likely parked by the cemetery. He suggests they take revenge on the couple by going to the graveyard and scaring them, so they paint their faces with ghoulish makeup.At the cemetery, the group wreaks havoc, frightening Frank and Pat, as well as another couple. When the police arrive, Billie Jean drops a candelabrum and her cape catches on fire, leaving her badly burned. Jimmy J. is arrested.The film then jumps forward three weeks later at the homecoming parade. Jimmy J. arrives on a motorcycle, sees Charlotte riding a float, and climbs aboard to speak with her. Although she claims her mother forced her to write Jimmy J. a letter and to break up with him, he is unconvinced and kisses her before climbing off the float. Hanley spots Jimmy J. and greets him warmly as Frank and Pat ride past in the parade, with Frank yelling that he thought Jimmy J. was kicked out of school. Eugene is also present as part of the college marching band, and he also acknowledges Jimmy J. by waving to him.Later, Jimmy J. visits Billie Jean, who has come home from the hospital and has not spoken since the accident. She is covered in bandages except for the right side of her face. When Jimmy J. speaks to her, she does not reply and he says it reminds him of the last scene in East of Eden. Jimmy J. confesses that he went to Memphis, Tennessee, the previous night and watched James Dean in the film 'Rebel Without a Cause' four times so that he could tell Billie Jean about it. He recounts how the movie parallels his own life and explains that he is responsible for Billie Jean's injuries the same way James Dean's character is responsible for Plato's death in the film. Jimmy J. apologizes and says he needs her forgiveness because he is leaving for California to visit the spot where James Dean died. When Billie Jean does not answer, he pleads with her, warning her that her mother plans to send Billie Jean to a clinic for shock treatment. Billie Jean blurts out, "Stop it!" and tells him that she does not want to hear any more. She asks him to break all the mirrors in the room because her face is scarred for life. Her mother, Melba Lou Turner (Susan Tyrrell), comes upstairs responding to the noise and becomes upset when Billie Jean reveals that Jimmy J. told her about the shock treatment. Uneasy, Jimmy J. claims his words conjured a scene in a movie; "when life is feels like a movie, it is more real than at any other time". When he tells Billie Jean that she once agreed with him, both she and her mother tell the young man that life is not a movie and he leaves.At the football game, Jimmy J. watches Charlotte's coronation as football queen from behind a fence. In the final scene, Jimmy J. rides away from campus on his motorcycle through town and past the movie theater marquee that reads: Marilyn Monroe in 'The Seven-Year Itch.'
    

September 30, 1955


            Richard Kerm (Kaj-Erik Eriksen) leaves his latest job as an investigative journalist because his editor Charles insists on publishing an unconfirmed article about local political corruption. As a consequence, a politician commits suicide. Regretting having published that article, he quits.Richard comes back to his hometown of Glenville, a small town where everybody knows everybody from ages ago. His former boss named Burt "Dell" Delfino (Adrian Hough) gives him a job as a reporter. Soon afterwards, an advertising editor (Richard Thomas) at the newspaper comes across him on the street, offers him a coffee and mentions that his old girlfriend, Jackie (Christine Chatelain), is still working at her family's restaurant. Richard stops by the restaurant and they talk about their lives. She introduces him to the chef, an old friend called Moose (Chris Cochrane) because he makes moose noises. Suddenly, she throws a frozen chicken at his head because he had abandoned her and she still resents that. Her life had not been that wonderful: she married 5 years ago but got divorced only six months afterwards. Richard goes to the local doctor, Doctor Jeff Farley (Stephen Huszar), who also went to high school with him. To explain the blacened skin, Richard says that he banged his head when he was getting out of his car.There is a small gathering of old friends at the restaurant to celebrate Richard's 30th birthday: Dell, Dick, Jeff, Jackie and Moose are there. Richard insists on his story of his banging himself on the car hood, and there he learns that Jackie and Jeff are an item. Afterwards, the advertising editor, named Dick, talks to him when they are alone. Dick knows an awful lot of things about Richard, so many that the journalist starts feeling distrustful. Dick insists: he even tells him that he's Richard from the future, when he is 55. He shows that he has the same birthmark on his ass.Richard starts believing that Dick took the name from the movie which inspired Richard to become a journalist,  All the President's Men. Richard doesn't want to stay for long in his hometown, but Dick tells him that he will end up getting married to Jackie.Richard meets one of the interns at the newspaper called Ricky (Richard Harmon), just after he's been assigned to write an article about the potential opening of the big box chain store, Sir Save-a-Lot. Richard thinks that Ricky may be himself when he was fifteen: he's the editor of the only high-school newspaper  The Oak, his favourite films are  Borat, which makes him laugh, and  All the President's Men, which inspired both Richard and Ricky to want to become journalists. Richard orders Ricky to take off his trousers to see if he also has the same birthmark, so the young man runs away in panic. He goes to talk to Mayor Bell, but when he faces Bell, he realises it's Jackie. Jackie is the daughter of the 15-year-elected former mayor, so she was pressured into running for the position. She likes the new possibilities, jobs and tourism which the Sir Save-a-Lot will offer their town. Richard listens to some local businessmen who have differing opinions about the store, but he writes a positive review nevertheless: most people seem quite content.Anna (Aubrey Arnason), one of the high-school teachers, convinces Richard to talk to her students about how the power of the media is responsible for screwing up America's youth. However, after Richard has presented his excuses to Ricky, he convinces him to talk to the high school newspaper. We can see that Richard is Ricky's idol.Dick is mad at Richard because he handed in a positive opinion article to his editor. The article had disappeared because Dick took it off Dell's desk. Richard starts calling some other small towns where the giant chain has already stepped in, but it's all bad news: many businesses have closed down, and the wages are not that good. Richard writes a bad review, but then he throws it onto the rubbish bin. However, the article somehow ends up on the editor's desk.Jackie has heard about the negative article from Dell, who refuses to print it. She gets mad at Richard because the town has spent $15,000 on an economic feasibility study. First, Richard kisses Jackie, and then she kisses him back. Jackie says that the bad review won't get published anyway, as there is too much at stake for Glenville.However, the following day, there is bad news: Jeff has asked Jackie to marry him. Richard is heart-broken when he learns that Jackie has said yes. He meets with two people: Anna, who doesn't look that angry in spite of the fact that he didn't speak to her class as he promised, and Officer Rita (Carmen Moore), who Richard asks to fingerprint a coffee cup with a story that some person stole his computer.Anna and Richard hang out at her house. They get drunk together and Anna admits having a huge crush on Richard when they were in high school. Richard finds a stethoscope under a blanket on the couch, probably from Jeff. In the restaurant, Dick tries to talk to Jackie about doing the right things and what her feelings tell her and she listens attentively. Jackie wonders about the similarities between Richard and Dick's lives, as both lost their fathers when they were only eleven, and both their fathers were electricians, who supported humble families.The next day Rita pulls Richard over when he's about to leave Glenville for the nth time. It looks like she's going to arrest him, but then it was just a practical prank on her side. She tells him that the only fingerprints on the coffee cup are his.Richard is over the moon when he finds out Jackie has broken up with Jeff. Jackie pushes Richard in anger and he falls, breaking his arm. Jeff is uncomfortable when he's tending to Richard's broken arm. This time, Jackie is present and she admits that she broke his arm. Jeff inspects Richard's arm in a painful way, while he tries to convince his ex-fiancée to give him a chance to explain, or a second opportunity.The Glenville town meeting begins: Jackie Bell opens it, and tells everybody to vote with raised hands. Tug (Juan Riedinger) asks what will happen if somebody has multiple personalities, to which Jackie says that it'd be better if Tug himself won't vote at all. Everybody looks quite positive about the hypermarket, except for the one person who sells fish bait and is worried concerning the possible future competition. Dick tells Richard that that particular hypermarket ends up creating ghost towns, as all small businesses close down and people move out.When Richard speaks out opposing the project, Jackie tells Richard off: she says he hasn't changed and that he only cares about his work, ambitions and investigations. She tells Dell that the voting will be put off until she has time to fight the negative opinion, and asks Dell to republish in his newspaper the positive feasibility study.Jackie doesn't want to see Richard again. She talks to Dick later at the restaurant: he says that he lost the woman he loved because he didn't fight for her and has been lonely ever since. Dick drinks too much and has a possible heart attack the next morning.The following morning, Jackie tries to leave when she sees Richard in Dick's hospital room. They talk. She mentions that Dick said that he was depressed because of his loneliness and never being married.Dick has no medical records and the doctor wonders whether he was on any heart medication. Richard wonders if Dick had a heart. Richard looks around Dick's hotel room, and finds an obituary which says that Jackie will die very young after the Glenville bankruptcy and being impeached.Dick admits that he never married Jackie: he left Glenville when he was Richard's age and had a mediocre life, keeping himself always alone. Dick seems to have lost all his energy to live, but this time it's Richard who cheers him up.Dell won't publish Richard's new investigation, as it will make people oppose the giant chain. So Richard and Dick ask Ricky to publish it in his high-school newspaper  The Oak . They break into the school and print it in the paper. Richard writes a love letter to his town. Jackie and everybody read it, because, after all it's a free newspaper. Richard advocates against change: sometimes things are better the way they have always been.CUT TO - the future.Dick is puzzled, as he doesn't recognise his home. Looking at the walls, he sees his wedding photographs. Jackie is waiting for him, as they have to go to the restaurant for a celebration - which obviously Dick doesn't know anything about.Dick picks up his father's watch: he had sold it to buy Jackie's wedding ring, before leaving her to go to the big city.A grown-up Ricky, who now works for  The Times  after years of Dick/Richard's mentoring, is attending their wedding anniversary. Moose has done a wonderful meatloaf for a cake. Jackie and Dick are there, as are their son and his wife and their grandchild.

            The farmers of the peaceful planet Akir are threatened by the space tyrant Sador (John Saxon) and his army of mutants, the Malmori. Sador's huge ship carries a weapon called a "Stellar Converter", which turns planets into small stars. He threatens to use the Converter unless the planet submits to him when he returns in several days. Zed (Jeff Corey), the last Akira warrior, is old and nearly blind. He suggests they hire mercenaries to protect the planet. Lacking valuable resources, they can only offer food and shelter in payment. Unable to go himself, Zed offers his ship, which has an artificial intelligence navigation and tactical computer named Nell, for the job if they can find a pilot. The ship is fast and well-armed but cannot defeat Sador alone. Shad (Richard Thomas), a young man who has piloted the ship and is well known to Nell, volunteers for the recruiting mission.Shad's first stop is the Hephaestus space station, which repairs androids. Expecting to find weapons, Shad instead finds only two humans among the androids: Doctor Hephaestus (Sam Jaffe), kept on life support, and his beautiful daughter Nanelia (Darlanne Fluegel). The doctor attempts to force Shad to mate with his daughter. Shad doesn't want to abandon his people, and escapes, with Nanelia following in her own ship. Although she has no weapons, her highly advanced computer systems might be useful. The two split up to look for more mercenaries.A little later, Shad comes across Space Cowboy (George Peppard), a spacegoing truck driver from Earth. Shad learns that Cowboy is late delivering a shipment of laser guns to a planet which, as they watch, Sador destroys with his weapon. Lacking the fuel to carry the weapons home, Cowboy offers to deliver them to Akir. Shad talks him into teaching the Akira to use the guns.Later, Shad meets a set of five alien clones who share a group consciousness named Nestor. They admit their life is incredibly dull, since their whole race shares one mind. In order to be entertained, they have sent five members to join Shad's cause. Nestor does not require payment, saying they are completely self-sufficient.Next, Shad recruits Gelt (Robert Vaughn), a wealthy assassin who is so well known he can't show his face on any civilized planet. Gelt offers his services in trade for the ability to live peacefully hiding among the Akira. Gelt's spaceship is highly maneuverable and well armed.On his way back to Akir, Shad is approached by Saint Exmin (Sybil Danning), of the Valkyrie warriors. She is a headstrong woman looking to prove herself in battle. She pilots a small, barely armed, but extremely fast spaceship. Shad finds her annoying and wishes she would go away, but she tags along.While waiting for Shad's return, Nanelia is captured by a reptilian slaver named Cayman. Cayman possesses a powerful old ship with an eclectic crew of aliens. She quickly recruits Cayman to their cause when he learns that they are looking for mercenaries to fight Sador. The only payment Cayman wants is Sador's head, since Sador's forces had destroyed Cayman's homeworld.The fleet of seven ships return to Akir. Shad takes the mercenaries down to the surface, but they are greeted with caution by the natives, who are not used to violent species. Eventually, Sador returns, but his fleet of fighters is intercepted by Shad and his new friends. In the opening battle, Gelt skillfully destroys several of Sador's ships but is mortally wounded when his ship crashes. Meanwhile, Cowboy and the Akiran natives, armed with his laser guns, fight off Sador's invading ground forces.Sador survives an assassination attempt by one of the captured Nestors and launches all of his ships in retaliation against the planet. The Akira ground troops, lead by Cowboy, defeat Sador's army, but Zed is killed in the fighting. There is another huge space battle and the mercenaries' ships are destroyed one by one. However, the mercenaries are successful in destroying all of Sador's star fighters and the Stellar Converter, leaving only Sador's flagship. Shad and Nanelia, piloting Nell, are captured by the flagship in a tractor beam. The pair escape in a lifepod after Shad orders Nell to activate the ship's self-destruct program. Sador's ship is destroyed in the explosion. As Shad and Nanelia return to Akir, Nanelia despairs over the deaths of their friends. Shad tells her that the Akira believe that no one is truly dead when they are remembered and beloved by the living. The Akira will remember the sacrifices made by the mercenaries and honor them forever.
