
            Eugene's life with Down Syndrome is very simplistic and at times quite patronizing. As a young man he goes to school by himself (to a special education room for disabled students), where he is bullied by the "normal guys" and ignored by the girl he likes. He rakes leaves for neighbours to earn extra cash, and spends the rest of his time at home with his terminally-ill mother. His goal is to buy videogames and find a supposed "pot of god" at the end of the rainbow. When he discovers that his mother will soon be evicted, he runs away to rural ontario to attempt to track down some money to save the apartment. Unknown to him, his mother passes away quickly after his departure.Eventually Eugene meets a quirky old man who teaches him the art of dowsing in order to locate the hypothetical pot of gold. Eugene spends the night with him in his trailer, and accidentally discovers that his new buddy is an alcoholic. He decides to move on after his money mysteriously disappears.Along the way, his bike gets a flat tire, and he attempts to steal a new bike from a nearby residence. A strange man nearly beats him up, but upon realizing that Eugene wasn't trying to do anything wrong, the man, named Elvis, invites him to stay at his place for a while. Elvis is a washed-up punk rocker who makes extremely lewd and rude comments about women, but Eugene soon realizes that Elvis is extremely depressed about not actually forming any real strong connection or love with anyone. Elvis also dresses up in women's clothing. Eugene's first impression is that Elvis is transgendered, but Elvis just says that he's still normal enough. He then forces Eugene to call his mother, as Elvis misses his own family.Eugene eventually moves on and comes across a middle-aged hoarder with a sunny disposition and a young daughter, Anna, who also has Down Syndrome. Although Eugene and Anna awkwardly hit it off and become friends, Eugene is nervous at the prospect of sex, especially since Anna seems rather too knowledgeable, not to mention the webcam hidden in her bedroom. The excuse is that the camera is a lifeline between Anna and her "mom", but it is later revealed that Anna was probably illegally obtained as a baby, that her father isn't really her father, and that he has been using her to make porno VHS tapes for buyers. Disgusted, Eugene rescues Anna and they escape, spending the night in the woods. They share a slow dance and fall in love.As they continue onward, the couple come across a mass grave for wrecked cars. While playing in them, the brakes in one car fail, and unfortunately the car hits a tree, injuring them both. While Eugene is only mildly hurt, Anna gets a concussion and passes out. Realizing that she needs help, Eugene dig-dong-ditches a nearby neighbour and leaves Anna at the doorstep.Eugene comes across a little old lady with an estranged son. This woman is kind-hearted and nostalgic and loves sentimental trinkets from the past. Eugene breaks down and cries when he sees an Amber Alert of himself on the news. The old woman attempts to comfort him, but is shot to death by robbers. Eugene chases after both robbers and is conveniently used by one robber, who pleads for people to donate charity to the "retarded" boy. Eugene acts "retarded" on purpose at that point, in order to fool the criminals. Soon the cops find the body of the old lady, and Eugene, silent as ever, agrees to join a group home for "special kids" permanently. He proves to be more intelligent and resourceful than the others, but also more serious and sad. He still holds onto his belief in rainbows, but not that there will ever be an end of one to find.

            At a racetrack, aging drag racing star Lonnie "Lucky Man" Johnson (William Smith) makes engine refinements to his car, which is sponsored by the international oil company Fast Co. On its first test run around a track, it blows up, but Lonnie escapes unhurt, living up to his nickname. Fast Co team boss Phil Adamson (John Saxon) is not impressed, telling the head mechanic, Elder (Don Francks), that the team can't afford to win if it breaks the budget. The real business is that the car remains competitive and helps sell Fast Co products. In the Funny Car class, Lonnie's protégé Billy "The Kid" Brooker (Nicholas Campbell) gives top dog Gary "The Blacksmith" Black (Cedric Smith) a close run.On the road to Big Sky, Montana, Lonnie calls his girlfriend Sammy (Claudia Jennings), who is living in Seattle, saying he misses her. When the Fast Co rig blows a tire, Black, jealous of Fiasco's money and Lonnie's popularity, refuses to help change the tire. Adamson flies in his private plane with Candy Ellison (Judy Foster) the pretty new Fast Co ad girl. At the Big Sky meet, Adamson takes a backhander from the organizer. "The Fast Co team sell tickets at his mosquito patch. If you don't want us to continue..." says Adamson. He says that the fans come to see Lonnie, so while the dragster is being repaired he will replace Billy in the Funny Car. Lonnie doesn't like the idea. Billy likes it less, blaming Lonnie's ego. Lonnie's first ever Funny Car run is against Black, who is angry at the driver switch, especially when he loses the race. Billy finds some compensation in the attractive presence of Candy.En route to a next race in Spokane, Washington, Lonnie calls the dragster mechanic with a few ideas, but is told that Adamson cancelled the repair work. At the meet, Lonnie is less then complimentary on his Fast Co TV spot. Adamson is incensed and calls the company to say he's bringing in Gary Black. Candy overhears the phone call, and when she refuses to have sex with the TV interviewer as damage control, Adamson fires her. He offers Black the Fast Co ride. At the same time, Candy and Billy go and "get it on" inside Lonnie's trailer. Sammy shows up and interrupts them. She furiously assumes that it's Lonnie in the bed, until he appears in the doorway.Reunited, Lonnie and Sammy kick out Billy and Candy, and they resume making love and he talks about quitting racing. Adamson walks in without knocking, causing Lonnie to punch him to the floor. He says they're finished, but Lonnie assures him the car will race. Outside the trailer, Adamson gives Black and the surly mechanic, named Meatball, a job.While on another test run, the Funny Car's engine blows, but Lonnie controls the situation using the cockpit safety gear. Billy angrily accuses Black of sabotage, but Lonnie intervenes on Black's behalf. In the pit, Adamson announces that Black is the new Fast Co driver and the whole team is fired. Lonnie goes for him but is slugged with a tire iron by Meatball.Billy is deponent, but Lonnie insists they'll still race at Edmonton, Canada next weekend-- they'll simply steal back the car! First though they have to find it. Billy and PJ (Robert Haley) visit the local motor show and are amazed that Adamson has the car on display. That night, Billy and Candy create an amorous diversion for the security guard while Lonnie drives the car away. Working overtime, Lonnie, Billy, PJ get it in shape.At the Edmonton racetrack, there is a night meet. Lonnie's surprise independent entry is announced. Adamson is worried that Black will be beaten, but Meatball says he will win as long as he is in the left lane. Black doesn't like it, but Adamson tells him to shut up and drive. Lonnie gives an ecstatic Billy the ride.At the toss up for the lane choice, Billy wins and chooses left. Adamson ensures a last minute change, and Billy's complaint is ignored. As the driver's wait on the starting line, Black watches Meatball slope away, carrying two large cans of oil. At the green light, Billy gets a fast start, but Black surges alongside and then swerves, seemingly trying to run him off the road. Black takes the lead, then cuts into Billy's lane and hits the oil that Meatball has poured on the track. His car explodes in a huge fireball. Billy can do nothing. He goes for Meatball at the side of the track and in the struggle, Meatball's overalls catch fire. Billy uses his cockpit extinguisher to save his life.The team arrives on the scene. Adamson panics and takes to his plane. As it taxies down the runway strip, Lonnie jumps in the Funny Car and hits the throttle. He catches up just as the plane takes off, clipping the end off a wing. Adamson fights for control but the plane dives into a parked Fast Co oil truck, producing the second inferno of the night.The next morning, the team members discuss the future. Lonnie promises he'll have new funding in place soon, but first he and Sammy are going to share some quality time. Billy and Candy like the sound of that and go off somewhere to have sex too, but Elder and PJ are left by themselves with a car to prepare.

Hunter's Point, California. After the teens have a brief encounter with a police officer, The Zodiac Killer murders David Arthur Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen on Lake Herman Road.
Present Day, Virginia. Taking a risk to change his poor financial situation, landscaper Mick Bradley purchases an abandoned storage locker with his pawnbroker friend Harvey. Among the items retrieved from the unit are home movie reels of the Zodiac murders filmed by Zodiac himself. Despite her initial hesitancy, Mick's wife Zoe agrees to help Mick and Harvey investigate the reels in hopes of obtaining a $100,000 reward for information leading to Zodiac's capture.
Meanwhile, Zodiac captures Tina, the woman who manages the storage unit facility, and slits her throat with a knife.
Mick and Zoe break into the storage facility office to find out who rented the Zodiac locker. They discover it was rented under the name Betty Ferguson. After obtaining Betty Ferguson's address, the couple has a brief showdown with a man in the shadows outside.
Mick's trailer park neighbor Ray warns him about pursuing Zodiac.
Mick, Zoe, and Harvey break into the house belonging to Betty Ferguson and her husband Balthazar. While trying to steal another film reel, the trio is confronted at gunpoint by Benjamin Ferguson. Benjamin reveals he is Betty and Balthazar's son. His parents, both in their nineties, actually live in Florida. Benjamin gives Harvey a business card identifying him as an editor at the Tri-County News Ledger. As Benjamin dismisses the trespassers, a nearby neighbor briefly asks if everything is okay.
Harvey spots a cipher key while reviewing one of the film reels. While Harvey uses the key to work on decoding the unsolved Zodiac cipher, Zoe goes to the town hall to research records on Benjamin Ferguson.
Zoe discovers Benjamin's background is consistent with Zodiac's and Benjamin can be placed in San Francisco in the 1960s, where he worked at a newspaper following the Vietnam War. However, Benjamin had already moved to Virginia, as he had been writing investigative articles while pursuing a theory that Zodiac was moving east, at the time Zodiac murdered cabby Paul Stine.
Despite contradictory evidence, Mick continues under the pretense that Benjamin is Zodiac. Zoe becomes concerned with her husband's erratic behavior when strange events begin making Mick paranoid.
Mick and Zoe check in with Harvey, who dismisses them so that he can continue solving the cipher, which will reportedly reveal the Zodiac's name. When the couple returns later, they find Harvey missing, and initially assume he abandoned them to claim the reward money alone.
Mick investigates the space above the pawnshop when he notices something dripping from the ceiling. Zoe sees Harvey's van peeling away outside and, assuming Harvey is trying to get away from them in a hurry, immediately gives chase in Mick's truck. At the same time, Mick discovers Harvey's murdered body upstairs and realizes his wife is in danger.
Mick frantically races to the Ferguson house, where he finds Benjamin dead in his car with his throat cut. Mick also finds a Zodiac cipher written on the car door.
Zoe tracks Harvey's van to a remote farm. When her guard goes down, Zodiac captures her. Zodiac then calls Mick from Zoe's phone with a taunt and a threat to not contact police.
With Zoe held captive, Zodiac explains that he hadn't killed anyone for 40 years. He had followed Ben from San Francisco because he knew Ben was close to uncovering his identity, but grew to enjoy life in Virginia as Ben's unassuming neighbor. Forgetting to make payments on his storage locker compelled Zodiac to resurrect his crime spree to protect his identity.
Mick arrives at the farm for a face-off with Zodiac. Over the course of their confrontation and gun-play, Mick manages to free Zoe. The face-off continues all over the farm until Zoe brings Zodiac to the ground and Mick then shoots him in the throat.
Four weeks later, the FBI and local authorities continue investigating the recent murders. Mick exits the trailer to fix a light and seemingly vanishes. Worried, Zoe goes outside to check on him. An ominous foot sets down in the foreground.
