Vara: A Blessing


            Sarathsiri, a forty-five year old man, lives in a two storied building in a remote town surrounded by tea plantations. The ground floor is converted into a pawn shop and he lives on the upper floor. He is a loner and lives by himself, while frequently watching wrestling matches on television as his only choice of pastime. Selvi, a young girl aged twenty-four, visits Sarathsiri's pawn shop in an attempt to pawn items, some which are not worth anything. Being interested in her, Sarathsiri, using the help of his maid Lakshmi, finds out the background and truth about Selvis existence. Selvi, A Tamil girl (minority in Sri Lanka) is originally from the Kilinochchi (ethnic civil war stricken area of northern Sri Lanka) area and her parents have brought her to this up country area of central Sri Lanka to save her life. She is now living with her two aunts. One of them is a widow with two small children and the other one is a bitter unmarried middle-aged woman. An older widowed businessman proposes to marry Selvi. At the same Sarathsiri approaches Selvi and asks for her hand in marriage. Selvi elopes with Sarathsiri. Once at home, Sarathsiri teaches her the basics of the pawning business and asks her to save money as much as possible to acquire a plot of tea land. When Selvi tries to show her affection towards him, Sarathsiri becomes cold and unresponsive. They go for a South Indian Tamil movie in which Selvis favorite actor Viyay plays the main role. Selvi, who has seen a movie in a big screen for the first time, is visibly happy, but becomes saddened when Sarathsiri expresses his dislike for the movie and says the whole trip was a waste of money. Selvi wants to know more about Sarathsiri, but he evades her. Apart from earning money from the pawn business and watching wrestling, Sarathsiri prefers not to show much emotion and interest in Selvi.Gamini, a friend of Sarathsiri, suddenly visits him without prior notice and much to the surprise of Sarathsiri. They go out for a drink and at night and they return with Gamini drunk. In the morning while Sarathsiri is asleep, Selvi goes downstairs to answer the door. Gamini, who happens to be awake at that time asks forgiveness from Selvi for disturbing them. Selvi finds out by their conversation that Sarathsiri is an ex Sri Lankan Army solider. Visibly shocked, Selvi shows her displeasure towards Sarathsiri and leaves the house. Once Gamini leaves, Sarathsiri goes looking for Selvi and finds her at the place where he proposed her. At night Selvi confronts Sarathsiri. She questions him why he hid the fact about him being an ex-Army soldier. Sarathsiri replies to her asking what difference would it have made. Selvi says if she knew he was an army soldier, being a Tamil, she would never have married him. She reveals her past where her two brothers had been killed by the Sri Lankan army and her parents had brought her here to save her from being raped by the army, sacrificing their own lives. Unsettled by her ferocity, Sarathsiri grabs his pillow and blanket and goes downstairs. As he is leaving the upper floor Selvi follows him asking how many Tamil girls has he raped and how much gold has he stolen from them. Sarathsiri retorts saying if it wasnt for him, She wouldnt even be able to mouth off.While arranging the closet full of clothes, Selvi finds a revolver in a hidden drawer. In the night when Sarathsiri is asleep, she points the gun to his forehead. Because of his sudden head movement, Selvi changes her mind and backs off.Next day when she opens the hidden drawer, to her surprise the revolver is not there. She feels that Sarathsiri is intently observing her. Selvi gradually becomes unresponsive towards him and goes into depression. With failing health, she starts to suffer from seizures. Sarathsiri silently observes Selvis deteriorating health. He witnesses her singing one day. She isnt aware of his presence. Sarathsiri realizes that she is drifting away from him. He gets on his knees and confesses to her pleading her to speak. He promises to show her affection and restart a new life together. He also promises to find her missing parents. Sarathsiri starts to take care of Selvi and treats her. He reveals that as a soldier he bore false witness to a raping and killing of a Tamil girl by his fellow soldiers including Gamini. He also tells her that he left the army because of the guilty conscience. His confession makes her condition worse as she goes into a deep seizure again.In an effort to win her back, Sarathsiri sells his business and buys things that make Selvi happy. He promises to take her to visit India, which has always been her dream. He returns her pawned items back to her, but her enthusiasm immediately vanishes and she becomes expressionless again. One morning Selvi unexpectedly promises Sarathsiri that if she would be forgiven then she would become the wife he desires. Overjoyed, he kisses her from head to foot and leaves to buy air tickets for them to go to India. Selvi takes the rosary and prays after he leaves. She makes a decision that changes both their worlds forever.
