The Comedy Store


            Mike Binder wrote and directed this melodrama about two men who meet after a long break in their friendship and struggle to help each other rebuild their lives. Don Cheadle is Alan Johnson, a dentist who feels smothered and unfulfilled by his comfortable life or beautiful wife (Jada Pinkett Smith), when chance brings him across his former college roommate, Charlie Fineman (Adam Sandler). Fineman lost his entire family on 9/11 and in the years that have ensued, he has completely isolated himself in a child-like existence. Refusing to acknowledge his past or the tragedy that is too horrible to even think about, Charlie is constantly listening to music, playing video games, watching movies, and banging on his drums. Alan finds himself beginning to enjoy life again in Charlie's child-like presence, but as he realizes the extent of the pain that ravages Charlie he starts to attempt to help Charlie face his past and return to the real world. Also woven into the story are the sensitive psychologist Angela Oakhurst (an excellent Liv Tyler) and a beautiful but confused woman named Donna Remar (Saffron Burows), who is struggling with her divorce. Binder himself stars in an excellent performance as Bryan Sugarman, a lawyer who was Charlie's friend before 9/11, and who Charlie now refuses to acknowledge or speak with. However, he has devoted himself to protecting Charlie's finances, living situation, and general peace-of mind.After working with Dr. Oakhurst, Charlie is able to begin to acknowledge the deaths of his wife and three daughters. However, the trauma of this memory nearly drives him to suicide, and after a brief stay at a mental hospital, his parents-in-law attempt to commit him permanently. Donald Sutherland and B.J. Novak appear for a courtroom scene, after which Charlie is allowed to be free and to attempt to continue slowly building a new life, with the aid of his friends and loved ones. Alan finds new strength and meaning for his life after helping Charlie, and is able to renew his relationship with his own wife and daughters.

            In 1952 Detroit, Michigan, three brothers, first-born Marvin, middle child Buddy, and little Bobby Libner share a bedroom and squabble constantly. Buddy's science project is destroyed during an altercation, and Marvin exclaims that he cannot wait to get away from the other two.Eleven years later, in 1963, the adult Marvin (Daniel Stern), now a U.S. Air Force sergeant, arrives at a house to pick up a blue 1954 Cadillac Coupe de Ville convertible. At his father's request, he is supposed to drive it from Detroit to Miami, Florida, in time for his mother's 50th birthday. Buddy (Arye Gross) arrives and announces that their father asked him to accompany Marvin and pick up their younger brother, Bobby, at his high school academy, which Buddy calls a "reform school." Marvin and Buddy discuss whether it has been three or five years since they last saw each other. After Bobby (Patrick Dempsey) jumps into the back seat, he shouts obscenities at one of his teachers, but instead of driving away, Marvin forces Bobby to confront the teacher face to face.Later, Marvin telephones their father, Fred Libner (Alan Arkin), from a gas station. Fred insists they deliver the car in perfect condition by Sunday afternoon in four days, and informs Buddy and Bobby that Marvin is in charge during the journey. Driving south, Marvin and Bobby argue over what to play on the radio. Marvin, the most conservative of the three, likes soft rock and roll, while the rebellious Bobby wants rhythm and blues. Bobby smokes a cigarette despite Marvin's objection and accidentally burns a hole in the back seat.At a restaurant, Buddy and Bobby cannot believe Marvin is going to work with their inventor father after he leaves the Air Force. The brothers fight over the bill, and once they get back on the road, Buddy vomits in the back seat, egged on by Bobby. Meanwhile, in Florida, Fred Libner shows his brother, Phil Libner (Joseph Bologna), his latest invention, a plastic, rust-proof, lightweight stop sign that will last forever. He calls it an "annuity" for his sons. The two middle-aged brothers bicker until Phil leaves.Meanwhile, Fred's three sons argue whether the car is the same blue 1954 Cadillac their father once owned, because why else would he want a nine-year-old car driven over a thousand miles to Florida? At a motel, Marvin, Buddy, and Bobby fight over whether to watch "The Fugitive" or Los Angeles Dodgers baseball on television.The next day back on the road, a police car follows them, and when Bobby yells at him to speed up, Marvin hits a sign and smashes a headlight. The police pull them over and fine them $250. Marvin telephones their father, but does not reveal that they damaged the car and have run out of money. They sleep that night in the car on along the side of the road. Buddy confides to Bobby that in Florida he will see Tammy (Annabeth Gish), his college girl friend, who had sex with him on their first date. Buddy plans to ask her to marry him.The next morning, Bobby reveals that he hid most of his money, but surrenders it to Marvin for gasoline. During an argument, Bobby accuses Marvin of being just like their father, grabs his bag, and walks away. Buddy convinces his kid brother to stay by assuring him they will never see each other again after delivering the car.In Florida, as Fred Libner sits on his boat near his house, his wife, Betty (Rita Taggert), tells him she never regretted marrying him, despite the difficulties between them.As the three younger Libners listen to The Kingsmen's recording of "Louie Louie" on the car radio, each one interprets the lyrics his own way. Bobby calls it a "hump song," Buddy a "dance song," and Marvin a "sea shanty." Later, while Marvin sleeps in the back seat, Buddy lets Bobby drive. Pushing what he thinks is the cigarette lighter, Bobby hits the button for the convertible top, and the wind rips it off the car.A little later, as Buddy drives, he falls asleep, hits a wire fence, and plunges into a shallow pond. Marvin screams at both brothers, declaring their journey is over because he cannot stand them. He confesses that their father is dying, but wanted to hide the news from Buddy and Bobby. When Marvin cools down, they return to the road with a battered fender.Near Miami, they stop at Tammy's house, but Buddy discovers she is living with a man named Rick (Ray Lykins). Tammy tells Buddy she thought she would never see him again. The brothers stop at Uncle Phil's house to borrow money to fix the Cadillac, but despite his expensive home, Phil is penniless because he gambles at the dog track. All he can give is a "hot tip" on a race. Marvin convinces Bobby to pawn his coin collection for $90.That night, Buddy returns to Tammy's house with a bouquet of roses, while Marvin and Bobby go to the dog track. Studying a tout sheet, Marvin decides not to bet on Uncle Phil's tip but rather his own choice, and his dog wins. Meanwhile, Buddy makes love with Tammy and wants to rekindle their college romance. However, Rick comes home early and beats him up. The next morning, when Marvin hears what happened, he goes to Tammy's house and punches Rick in the face. Meanwhile, Fred Libner tests his plastic stop sign by replacing a city sign at a nearby intersection, but as soon as he leaves, wind blows it away.The brothers take the Cadillac to Doc Sturgeon (James Gammon), a mechanic who works on vintage automobiles, but because of the their limited funds and 24 hour deadline, Sturgeon enlists them to do the work under his supervision. Tammy arrives at the garage and tells Buddy that Marvin broke Rick's nose. Bobby apologizes to Marvin for accusing him of not looking after his kid brothers. As Buddy and Tammy embrace, Marvin and Bobby hug. After they restore the Cadillac to pristine condition, the brothers drive toward their parents' home, but Rick and his friend, Raymond, intercept them. Fighting on the same side, Marvin, Buddy, and Bobby send the tough guys running. As the brothers get back in the Cadillac, an old man turns the corner too fast, because the stop sign is no longer there. The man hits the Cadillac's driver's side door.When the brothers arrive home, their mother is happy to see them and loves the Cadillac. Their father notices the smashed door, but tells them he does not care. Setting up the journey was a ruse to force the brothers to deal with each other. Marvin admits to his father that he told Buddy and Bobby about his illness. As the family goes into the house, Fred says, "You did good, Marvin."
    

Coupe de Ville


            At Camp Tamakwa in 1972, a group of kids hike with camp owner Uncle "Unca" Lou Handler (Alan Arkin), and come upon a moose in the forest.Twenty years later in September 1992, the former campers prepare to return to Tamakwa for a fall reunion after the regular summer season. Landing on the island, they are greeted by Unca Lou, who invited them back. Brad Berman (Kevin Pollak), one of the returnees, encounters camp maintenance man "Stick" Coder (Sam Raimi), son of the late camp custodian Wylie Coder who has taken over his father's job. Brad observes that Wylie never liked him, and Stick concurs. Even though some of the returnees are married or paired up, Unca Lou insists the women sleep in the girls' cabin, and the men in the boys' cabin, and outlines a week of the sort of camp activities they enjoyed as kids.Jamie Ross (Matt Craven) asks Unca Lou how he can be expected to stay apart from his 21-year-old girl friend, Gwen Daugherty (Kimberly Williams), for six nights, and the counselor responds that he probably won't be able to, but asks that he not harm any wild animals in the process. In their cabin, Jamie, Brad and his cousin, Matthew "Matt" Berman (Vincent Spano), reminisce, and wonder whatever became of Jack Belston (Bill Paxton). Matt recalls that Unca Lou kicked him out of camp.As Jennifer Morton (Elizabeth Perkins), Kelly Berman (Julie Warner) and Gwen unpack in their cabin, Beth Warden (Diane Lane) arrives and is warmly welcomed. Later, Jack arrives. The others are happy to see him, but when he greets Beth, he apologetically says, "I should have been at Rick's funeral." When Unca Lou comes out to start the week's activities, he seems surprised to see Jack. As a first step for the week, he makes his guests take a swimming test, then runs them through their paces on sailing gear and terminology. He tells the group they represent the "golden age" of the camp when everything seemed to come together. As they pair off to go sailing, Matt confides to Jack that he is glad to be away from his cousin, Brad, for a few minutes, and that he is thinking of leaving their clothing manufacturing business.At night, in the kitchen, the group snacks and smokes marijuana. Brad reminisces that Unca Lou used to patrol the camp at night and "bust" anyone he caught violating curfew. Later that evening, Brad returns from the bathroom to discover his roommates have short-sheeted his bed. In the morning, the guys play another trick on Brad, by removing toilet paper from the men's room.At breakfast, the returnees marvel at Unca Lou's ability to remember every camper's name. Unca Lou recalls that he often gave kids who felt left out or lonely a "super secret Indian name." Matt does not believe Unca Lou can remember his secret Indian name, but Lou responds, "Thundering Cloud." Matt is amazed until he learns that Brad's super secret Indian name and every other secret Indian names was also "Thundering Cloud." Unca Lou confesses to the campers that this is the last summer for Camp Tamakwa, since he feels he can no longer connect with the kids.Later, Jack digs a hole near one of the cabins, looking for something he buried years before, but whatever he is looking for is not where he remembers burying it. While out walking with some of the others, Jack is asked why he returned after having been kicked out of camp? He replies that Unca Lou's call reminded him he needed to make amends.That night, after a long day, Kelly asks Matt if he has fallen out of love with her. He protests that they have come up to the camp to have a good time, but she insists they have to work things out between them. She remembers when he used to spend hours saying goodnight to Jennifer when they were kids at camp, and she always wished he had been kissing her instead. Matt gives her a perfunctory kiss and tells her to go to bed.In the men's cabin, the guys pull another prank on the hapless Brad by sticking his hand in warm water while he sleeps, causing him to wet the bed.The next day, watching him from afar, Jennifer and Beth discuss Jack. Beth mentions that Jack was her husband Rick's best friend, and she thinks he is in Alcoholics Anonymous now, and that is what he was referring to when he mentioned making amends. Beth also tells Jennifer she has not made love since Rick passed away.In the evening, after having sex, Gwen suggests to Jamie they could run the camp themselves, but he is not interested; and when she suggests that he is afraid of her having a baby, he tells her he likes his life and she has 15 years before her biological clock winds down. On the grounds at night, Matt runs into Jennifer, but she gives him a peck on the cheek and goes off to bed so he won't get into trouble with the camp counselor. Later that night, the men "raid" the girls' dorm. Matt cannot wake Kelly, so he asks Jennifer to join him, Jack, and Beth outside while Jamie and Gwen stay behind to make love.Meanwhile, Beth and Jack go to the boathouse, where Beth asks Jack why he was kicked out of camp. He tells her about Sam Grover, a junior counselor Unca Lou hired over the phone, only to discover when he arrived that Sam was a black man. Lou gave Sam return train fare, plus one week's pay and sent him home. Jack says he was forced out because he then took something from Lou designed to take him down a peg over the way he treated Sam Grover.Elsewhere, Matt takes Jennifer to an empty cabin, and though both realize they should leave, they start to kiss, only to have Unca Lou burst in on them and escort them back to their dorms.The next day, Jack continues to dig for what he buried, and Jennifer tells Jack that Beth is interested in him.That night the campers watch a promotional film about the camp shot when they were young attendees. Later, Beth and Jack talk by a campfire, but when he tries to kiss her, Beth tells him she is not interested in him that way. At dinner, Matt asks if someone might take over running the camp. The group discusses the idea, but the dynamics of their relationships make it clear that is not likely to happen.The following day, as the others gather on the dock, Gwen rows up in a canoe and takes off the bikini Jamie gave her as a present, saying she does not believe the garment shows enough of her body off to his friends. He demands she put on some clothes, but Gwen refuses to take orders, and he walks away.At night in their dorm, Jennifer assures Kelly that, although she is lonely, she is not trying to steal Matt.The next day, Unca Lou admits to Jack that he was wrong to treat Sam Grover the way he did, but he chose to send Grover away not because he is a racist, but that Unca Lou speculated that other young campers would not react well to a black man being their counselor.When Gwen attempts to return her ring to Jamie, he grabs her roughly. Matt intercedes, and when Unca Lou sees what is going on, he suggests they take their fight to the boxing ring. Although Matt hates boxing and at first takes a beating, he knocks Jamie down and wins the fight. Then Kelly puts on Jamie's boxing gloves and challenges her husband, telling him he cannot ignore her anymore.As Jack again sets to digging, he finally finds what he has been looking for: Unca Lou's silver 1946 Michigan State University Class A Boxing Championship trophy that he stole and buried.Elsewhere, Unca Lou takes Beth to the dilapidated "Everett cabin," and tells her about Oscar and Claire Everett. When Oscar died, he wanted to be "deep sixed" in the lake. After wasting the last 15 years of her life alone in the cabin, Claire Everett died and wanted to be dropped into the lake to be with her husband. Beth accuses Lou of making up the story, but understands it was meant for her.As the final night dance goes on, Matt and Kelly reconcile, Jamie asks Jennifer to dance, Matt reaches an agreement with his cousin Brad to leave their clothing business, Beth takes Jack out to look at the stars and seduces him, and Gwen asks Stick Coder to dance with her. At one point Brad rushes in and gets everyone to follow him to a raft at the pier to watch Beth and Jack rowing in a canoe. Then, in an act of revenge for the tricks they played on him, Brad unties the raft and sets all of them adrift. Meanwhile, Unca Lou returns to his office and finds the trophy standing on his desk.The next morning, as the group boards the boat for home, Matt pulls Unca Lou aside to apologize and say that he cannot take over the camp. However, Beth and Jack are not on board, and when Lou heads back he runs into them. They tell him they want to take over the camp, but do not know where they will get the money. He happily gives them the camp for free. The final scene shows Beth and Jack, the new owners, welcoming a large group of young campers to their new summer camp.
    

Indian Summer


            The plot revolves around Pippa's emotional issues that lead her toward an affair with Chris Nadeau (Keanu Reeves). Pippa and her husband Herb have sold their downtown apartment and moved to the suburbs. Their marriage has lost its spark and Herb is having heart problems.In an interesting twist the plot flashes back to a younger Pippa played by Blake Lively, that gets spanked by a dominatrix named Kit (Julianne Moore). Pippa is involved in lesbian bondage films before having a torrid love affair with Herb, who helps her to get her life together.There is also a rather dramatic flashback scene where Herb's wife at the time, Gigi Lee (Monica Bellucci), points a gun at Pippa, and then ends up committing suicide.Pippa finally finds out that Herb is having an affair with a friend to the family, Sandra Dulles. Herb has a fatal heart attack and Pippa leave to explore her new relationship with Chris, leaving her children, Ben and Grace, to organize the funeral.
