Piazza Fontana: The Italian Conspiracy


            In this chilling story about world politics, Toni Servillo defies expectations playing two roles, imbuing each character with brilliant nuance and astonishing attention to detail. In the first, he personifies political failure in the role of the disgraced ideologue and party leader, Enrico Oliveri. In the second, he embodies the shrewd genius of a madman as Oliveris unhinged twin brother who seizes control of the nation amidst the void of his brothers disappearance. As the national election approaches, Enrico Oliveri has plummeted in the polls and his supporters and adversaries alike begin to acknowledge his impending downfall. Unwilling to face the failure of his party and his nation, Oliveri vanishes into the night. Allinsaputa di sua moglie Anna e del suo stretto collaboratore Bottini, fugge una notte improvvisamente per raggiungere a Parigi la donna con la quale, 20 anni prima, aveva avuto una relazione, Danielle. Danielle è oggi una segretaria di edizione sposata al celebre regista cinese Mung con il quale ha una figlia dodicenne, Hélène.
Nel frattempo in Italia Anna e Bottini cercano di risolvere la situazione ricorrendo al fratello gemello di Enrico, Ernani, professore di filosofia reduce da un lungo soggiorno in ospedale psichiatrico. Pur essendo fratelli gemelli apparentemente identici, i due uomini sono in realtà profondamente diversi.
Ernani prende dunque il posto di Enrico: rilascia interviste, tiene discorsi in pubblico, presiede conferenze immettendo nella politica un vento rivoluzionario, è la creatività al potere, la poesia che lascia stupefatti gli avversari e fa sognare gli elettori.
Sarà questo linizio di un misterioso passo a due in cui si intrecciano la vita pubblica e la vita privata di un uomo, ma anche quelle di due fratelli gemelli innamorati della stessa donna.

An official selection of the Cannes, Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals, VINCERE is a gripping film that combines drama, archive footage, and music creating a highly cinematic oratorio of enormous emotional force.On the whole Vincere is a dark movie which tries to chart the life of Ida Dalsern, who instantly fell in love with Benito on a train and did her best to help him in his political career, giving him all her money to finance his newspaper Il Popolo dItalia. In return, the Duce treated her cruelly, systematically trying to eliminate these facts (marriage included) from his life. She was maltreated, stalked and eventually locked up in a lunatic bin for life.
Vincere is roughly based on two books respectively called Mussolins Marriage by Marco Zeni and Mussolinis Secret Child by Alfredo Pieroni, and on Fabrizio Laurenti and Gianfranco Norellis documentary film Mussolinis Secret. Actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno plays Ida Dalser, the first wife, while actor Filippo Timi plays two roles, the young Mussolini and in the second part of the movie Mussolini s secret son, Benito Albino. Despite the faults in the movie, both actors did a great job and their performances left one thirsty for more. [D-Man2010]
    

Vincere


            Two couples of friends, Matteo and Francesca, Diego and Shary go to see Wagner's opera, Tristan and
Isolde. By chance, they encounter Leonard, Shary's younger brother, who is briefly passing through Italy.
Leonard is still profoundly marked by the death of his girlfriend. Shary insists he come stay with them in
the beautiful villa on the beach that the two couples have rented for the summer.
Matteo, a 40 year-old established psychoanalyst, is married to Francesca, with whom they have a 5 yearold
daughter, Elena. Matteo,, has a solidly happy, although not explosively passionate relationship with
Francesca. Diego is an eternal child, who with great difficulty chose to become a lawyer; at a very young
age he discovered that Shary, the American girl he was dating, was pregnant with his child. After David
was born, Diego and Shary got married, broke up, then got back together. Theirs is a passionate but
unstable relationship. David, having grown up in the United States, where he now goes to boarding
school, comes back to Italy after five years to spend the summer with his family. Davids arrival deeply
unsettles Matteo. Trying to escape his growing obsession, Matteo escapes to Rome to treat one of his
patients, Giuliana. The delicate balance between friends has been upset. The growing tension seems to
corrode the two families. Cracks appear in Matteo and Francescas relationship. Old disagreements
between Shary and Diego flare up. It is as if everyone knows the truth, but is afraid to confront it.
Leonard, having tried in vain to warn his sister and deter Matteo, decides to take off, leaving the main
characters to their inevitable destiny.
