Joshua's Heart


            The story presents three vignettes that are all tied together with a "wrap-around" story concerning a witch, Betty, who has kidnapped a young boy, Timmy, and holds him prisoner. Betty plans to roast him in her oven and serve him at a dinner party for more of her witch friends. To pass the time in his cell, Betty had given Timmy an old, thick book called "Tales From the Darkside". When she reveals her plans for him, Timmy begins to stall her by reading her some of the stories.The first story is called "Lot 249". At a prestigious university, a nerdy student, Bellingham, is bullied by two rich students, Susan and Lee, who are quite contemptuous of him because he's a work-study student. Susan's brother, Andy, helps Bellingham one night with a new specimen that has arrived in the archeology department: an ancient mummy. Speaking about how the ancient Egyptians would draw the corpse's brains out through it's nose with a hook and stuff vegetables into it's abdomen, Bellingham finds the incision in the mummy's abdomen where his preparers had stuffed him with herbs and onions. Bellingham also finds an ancient scroll and remarks that it's fairly worthless. Andy leaves and Bellingham reads the scroll, finding a spell that will bring the mummy to life to be his servant. Bellingham been cheated out of a teaching assistant's position in his department, an incident that somehow involved both Susan and Lee.Bellingham brings the mummy to life and sends it after Lee. It stalks Lee through his apartment, finally cornering him and forcing a hooked wire hanger up his nose, killing him. Susan returns home to find Lee's brain on a table in the front hall and Lee himself partially wrapped in cloth bandages. The mummy attacks her, chasing her through the house, where she becomes lodged in the broken window of the front door. The mummy uses a large pair of scissors and slashes her back open, stuffing the wound with flowers from a vase.Andy goes to Lee and Susan's place and finds them both dead. Suspicious of Bellingham, he goes to Bellingham's apartment and find him there with the mummy. He knocks Bellingham unconscious and ties him up. When Bellingham comes to, Andy demands that he turn over the scroll. Bellingham refuses at first and then begins to recite the incantation to bring the mummy to life and attack Andy. Andy is able to defend himself quite easily with an electric carving knife, dismembering the mummy. Bellingham finally directs Andy to a scroll, which he burns in the fireplace, along with the mummy's limbs. Bellingham ultimately leaves the university. While he rides away in a cab, he chuckles to himself. The driver asks him what he's laughing about & Bellingham tells him that a person like Andy would never know the difference between one ancient scroll and another - the scroll he reads is the actual one from the mummy. He recites from it and rides off. Later, Andy answers his door and finds Susan and Lee standing there, re-animated as mummies, ready to kill him.Back in Betty's kitchen, she tells Timmy that she knows he's trying to stall his death. Timmy convinces her to let him tell another story and she listens to him read "Cat From Hell."Halston, a high-priced assassin, arrives at an old mansion, having been summoned there by an old man in a wheelchair, Drogan. Drogan tells Halston that he has an unusual mark for him to dispatch: a black cat. The cat has supposedly killed Halston's sisters, Carolyn and Amanda. Both sisters had befriended the cat, feeding it and showing it affection over Drogan's objections that it was evil. Carolyn was killed when the cat, sitting on a staircase riser, tripped over it and fell to her death. Amanda had been killed when the cat laid on her face while she was asleep.Halston is skeptical. Drogan introduces him to the cat, which sits quietly in Halston's lap for a few minutes. When Halston smirks at the ease of such a lucrative job, he tries to strangle the cat. The cat slashes him with it's claws and escapes. Drogan tells Halston that his pharmaceutical company had tested a new medication on thousands of subjects, all of them cats. He now believes the cat has been sent to take revenge on him and his family.Drogan leaves the house, bidding Halston to kill the cat by the time he comes home and also suggesting he not get angry, which will cloud his ability to kill it. Drogan checks over his weapons and tries several methods of killing the cat, all of which fail. When the cat leaps at him and scratches his neck, Halston becomes furious. At one point he tricks the cat into approaching and eating from a dish of food - he uses a laser sighting scope to target the cat, fires his pistol and misses. Fully enraged, Halston chases the cat through the house. The cat, suddenly leaping on to and knocking Halston down, then forces itself into his mouth, crawls down his esophagus and roosts in his stomach.Just before the stroke of midnight, Drogan returns and finds Halston dead on the floor. The cat crawls out of Halston's body and leaps onto Drogan's lap. Drogan has a heart attack and dies.In Betty's kitchen, Betty herself is impatient with Timmy, who persuades her to listen to one final story from the book, "Lover's Vow".An out-of-work artist, Preston, is being told by his agent that he can't help him if he can't overcome his creator's block. The two leave the bar they'd met at; in the alley outside, Preston's friend is attacked by a monstrous gargoyle, who decapitates the man with one slash of it's claws. Preston shrinks in terror, begging for his life. The gargoyle makes him promise that he'll never speak of what he saw or the creature that committed the murder. The gargoyle also slashes Preston's body as a reminder. Preston promises to keep his vow and the beast flies off.On his way home Preston meets a beautiful woman, Carola. Telling her that the neighborhood is dangerous, he takes her home with him. The two have sex together and fall in love, eventually marrying and having a boy and a girl. Preston also finds that his creativity has returned and he enjoys a successful period of production. However, he is still torn with guilt over the murder of his friend and occasionally draws pictures of the beast, which he is careful to keep from Carola and his children.By the time 10 years have passed since Preston witnessed the murder, he decides to tell Carola about the night he met her. He shows her a small sculpture of the gargoyle he'd kept hidden. When Carola sees it, she lets out a mournful scream and begins to transform, saying that Preston had broken his promise - she, herself, is the gargoyle. Preston is shocked and horrified, even more so when their children begin to transform into gargoyles themselves. Carola tells him she's sorry and kills him. She gathers her children together and flies off, breaking through their skylight and settling on a high ledge of a nearby building. They turn to stone, staring mournfully down at Preston's body.Back in the witch's kitchen, Betty tells Timmy his time's up. She approaches him with a butcher knife and the keys to his cell and shackles. Timmy frantically tells her he has one more story to tell, one not from the book. Timmy throws some marbles in Betty's path and she slips on them, falling backwards on to the skewers she'd set out. Timmy manages to reach the keys while Betty struggles in pain and he frees himself. He gives her a hard shove, sending her into her own oven, which he slams shut, roasting her alive. Timmy seizes the package of cookies Betty had been feeding him and breaks the "fourth wall" by asking the audience, "Don't you just love happy endings?"

            Jessica (Rachel McAdams), the hot chick, is an over indulged, spoiled but extremely beautiful teenage girl who isn't used to hearing the word "no". Given this character flaw, when Jessica and her friends, her fellow hot chicks, go shopping at the mall, she steals some earrings from a metaphysical store after being told they're not for sale. Unknown to her, the earrings carry a centuries old curse and this is where the fun begins.While pumping gas and admiring her new earrings, Rob Schneider (his character isn't given a name) is robbing the gas station. When he waits on Jessica's car to speed his getaway, she drops an earring which is promptly picked up by criminal Rob. That evening, they both put an earring in their earlobe and while they sleep, their bodies trade places. Now we have Jessica (Rob Schneider) working towards convincing people he/she's not who they think he/she is and the now criminal in a woman's body has discovered he/she has a marketable quality in the form of being a "hot chick". As hard as Rob Schneider's Jessica is working towards reversing the curse, Rachel McAdams' criminal is working just as hard to use it before he/she loses it, including shaking it on a stage for dollar bills. Rob Schneider plays a great hot chick - Rachel McAdams plays a great criminal looking for the next score/scam.Everything these two go through being in the other person's body is funny and indicative of the oddball Schneider's usual fare. While this was never destined to be Oscar worthy, it's definitely just under two hours of escape, smiles and laughter.

            Emergency medical technician Karen Hexley is called to the scene of a major car accident to find that her husband, Andrew, was hit by a drunk driver. The driver perished in the crash and her blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. Miranda rides with Andrew to the hospital, where they learn that he will eventually recover from his injuries but he will need to rest for a long time. At Karen and Andrews house, Karen is having coffee with her friend, who suggests that to make up for Andrews lost income, she offer their two extra bedrooms on Vacay N Stay, a website for travelers. Karen says they used all of the life insurance from her moms passing for the down payment. In a disheveled apartment, Miranda Breyers reads an article about the Hexleys car accident and says to herself, Ive finally found you. A man named Ryan walks in and they have an argument which escalates. It is revealed she is an exotic dancer. He calls her a rude name and she kicks him, dropping him to the floor before she walks out.At the hospital, Karen explains to Andrew how they have few options except to rent our their rooms. Andrew eventually agrees, saying, OK, but if we get even one weirdo, theyll stop. Karen puts an ad up on Vacay N Stay and hopes for the best.At the house, Andrews big brother, Tyler, is installing new door locks. Soon, two people have booked reservations at their house. One is Miranda, a hotel trainer from Portland who will be arriving shortly.Miranda is in another apartment with her friend, who asks Miranda what she should tell Mirandas regular clients when they ask about her being gone. She says to tell them shes off with a rich person. She asks her friend to drive her to Ryans house, where Miranda pulls out a baseball bat and smashes up Ryans house.Miranda appears at Karens house to check in. Karen gives her keys, shows her around, and offers her a coffee. When shes alone, Miranda hides a folder full of documents under the mattress in her room and smiles to herself.In the kitchen, Miranda explains her job as a hospitality trainer. She sees a picture of Karen and Andrew together and they chat about his accident and how hes on leave from his job in pharmaceutical sales. They make plans to have dinner the next night at a restaurant. When Karen leaves for work, Miranda goes through kitchen drawers and locates a set of keys which she has duplicated. She sets up a hidden camera in the master bedroom and also looks through Karens personal belongings, including photo albums. She steals a picture of a mom and daughter. She logs on to Karens computer using Karens identity to turn down other people who have requested to stay at the house.Karen is at work and comforting a young woman who has lost her mother to suicide. Karen says she has been through the same thing, when her mother, who had been battling cancer, killed herself. Arriving home after her shift, Karen walks upstairs to her bedroom, not knowing that Miranda is watching her via the web camera in her bedroom. The next day, Karens car in the driveway wont start, and Miranda offers her a ride to work in her rental car. Miranda also offers to help bring some paperwork to Andrew at the hospital that he needs. While at the house, Miranda secretly attaches a GPS tracker to Mirandas car. That night, she goes to visit Andrew in the hospital to meet him and drop off the paperwork. She asks him about his brother, Tyler, and learns Andrew and Tyler have no other siblings. Andrew tells Miranda how much they miss Karens mother, who died just six months ago. Tragedy has a way of bringing people closer to together, he says. Outside the hospital, a blonde woman named JoJo catches up to Miranda, calling her Cheyenne. They apparently danced together before and JoJo asks Miranda about the time she spent in jail for stealing shoes. JoJo tells her shes dancing at a place called the Kitty Kat Room and she can get Miranda a job there if she wants. At home, Karen is curious as to why no one else has booked any Vacay time at her house, except for one man from Vancouver. Karen tells Miranda that she needs to reschedule their dinner. Miranda seems put out, and Karen, apparently feeling guilty, decides to invite Miranda to come along with them. Miranda also meets Tyler, Andrews brother, who is working on the car. They flirt.At dinner in a restaurant, Miranda seems annoyed as Aubrey talks about her ex-boyfriend and how he pays for his ex-wifes expenses. When Karen steps away to use the restroom, Aubrey says that she and Karen are like sisters, because they were in a sorority together. Miranda does not agree, saying sharply that a bond with a real sister is nothing like the forced friendship of sorority sisters. She grips a sharp steak knife under the table, then excuses herself to go to the restroom. She talks to herself in the mirror, reminding herself to be nice. When the three women are at the table again, Miranda is acting nicely again. That night, Miranda watches via the webcam as Karen climbs in to bed.The next day, Miranda tells Karen she would like to stay another week as her work has asked her to extend her time. Karen has no other bookings so she says yes, though she seems a little concerned. She also invites Karen to go shopping and spend some time together. Just then, Evander, the renter from Vancouver, knocks on the door and Karen shows him in. He is an older gentleman.That night, Miranda takes a job at the Kitty Kat club. Karen visits Andrew at the hospital, helping him recover, and tells him she would rather not have Miranda there but shes OK. That night, Evander and Karen are having chips and salsa in the kitchen when Miranda walks in. Miranda suggests watching a movie together but Karen says she wants to go to bed. She has a long conversation on the phone with Andrew while Miranda lurks outsider her closed door. Evander notices this but says nothing. When Miranda hears that Andrew will be back soon, she becomes agitated.The next day, Evander leaves for some sightseeing and, alone in the house, Miranda goes into the den, one of the rooms the lodgers are not supposed to be in. She logs in under Karens name and rejects more Vacay applicants. Evander returns suddenly, having forgotten his telephoto camera lens, and catches her in the den. Miranda explains that Karen gave her permission. Evander seems doubtful. Nonetheless, he agrees when she asks to go along on the sightseeing venture.While theyre visiting the deserted Arboretum, Miranda sneaks up behind Evander and hits him hard with a rock. She covers him with foliage and leaves, taking his belongings with her. Using Evanders phone, she leaves a negative review about Karens lodgings, then removes all of Evanders belongings from his room, as if he had checked out. She throws everything of his in a dumpster. That night, Karen is confused about why Evander why checked out early and why he left a negative review about her. Miranda tells Karen he was weird and not to worry about it. She says shell put a glowing review on herself. Over wine, Karen and Miranda talk about their families. Karens father was a marine and gone a lot. Miranda was adopted and spent time moving around foster families. When she located her birth parents, neither would meet with her. Miranda tells Karen that what she really missed was having siblings. Karen says thats why she appreciates her friend Aubrey so much, because shes like a sister. A while later, Andrew returns home, walking carefully as he is still bruised and recovering. Karen still doesnt know why she doesnt have any more bookings on Vacay. Tyler is over and cooks dinner for everyone, inviting Miranda to join them. Andrew and Karen make it an early night, but Tyler and Miranda stay up for dessert.In the master bedroom, Karen tells Andrew that Miranda seems too interested in Tyler, and shes still upset about Evanders sudden departure. JoJo and Miranda are at the dance club and Miranda tells her how much she likes Tyler. Jo-Jo invites Miranda to move in with her, but Miranda says she wants to stay with Karen and Andrew. The next day, Karen breaks a lunch date with Miranda to help Aubrey with a boyfriend crisis. Karen tells Aubrey that Miranda seems desperate for a friend and Karen is getting a little tired. She mentions that Mirandas Facebook profile is private so she cant see who her other friends are. Later, Aubrey secretly follows Miranda as she drives to work at the Kitty Kat Room. Aubrey goes inside the club and takes a picture of Miranda and tells Miranda shes going to tell Karen that Miranda lied about working at a hotel. Miranda, angered, shoves Aubrey. The bouncer steps in between and Aubrey leaves. Miranda tries to call Karen but only gets her voicemail.At work, Karen receives the photo Aubrey took of Miranda in the strip club. She comes home and confronts Miranda, who says she wants to explain things. Karen and Andrew tell Miranda that things have gotten weird and she needs to move out. Miranda goes to her room, removes the documents she had hidden when she first moved in, and shows them a birth certificate that apparently proves Miranda and Karen are sisters. According to Miranda, when Karen was a baby and her father was deployed, her mother had an affair with another man and became pregnant by him. When Karens father found out, he insisted that Miranda go to live with her biological father and never have any contact with them. When she grew up, Miranda went to find her biological mother, but it was too late, as her and Karens mother had just died. Andrew asks her why she came to them pretending to be a stranger to rent a room, Miranda said that she was scared and wanted to meet Karen before she could decide if it was a good idea to tell her the truth. She bursts in to tears and Karen leaves the room. Andrew tells Miranda to give Karen some time.Miranda eavesdrops as Andrew and Karen talk about how odd and confusing this news is. The next day, Miranda gives Karen a necklace with half a heart she wears the other half. She apologizes for lying and hopes they can be close. She asks about how their mom died. Karen explains that her mother had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and had a good prognosis. Before starting treatment, she went to Mexico for a short vacation. Karen was expecting her to come back, but instead she hanger herself in her hotel room. Karen tells Miranda that they can get to know each other but that Miranda needs to move out, that its too much, too soon. Miranda starts to get angry, but then recovers and says cheerfully shell find a place nearby and they can get to know each other as sisters more slowly. Karen receives a phone call from Evanders granddaughter, who says he never came home from his vacation. She says that something is weird because he has and never would leave a negative review about anyone. Karen says she wishes she could help and they will keep in touch.Miranda is looking at a new apartment to rent and takes a rental application. While driving, shes pulled over by a police officer who asks for her license and registration. The police checks on her records and says that the rental car shes driving is stolen. He handcuffs her and puts her in the back of his vehicle. When shes brought to jail at the station, Miranda calls Karen to bail her out. While at the station, the police give Karen Mirandas personal belongings, and thats when Karen sees the rental application: Miranda was going to use Karens name and information to rent an apartment. At the house, Karen and Andrew confront Miranda about the stolen car and the rental application, and Miranda tries to explain that it was a simple mistake. Karen says shes done and that Miranda must leave. Karen begs to stay, saying, Were blood! and becomes more and more agitated, hitting herself in the head in frustration.
Meanwhile, an Arboretum employee finds Evanders body on the grounds. Karen is at restaurant and calls Tyler to see if theyre still on for their date that night. They meet at a bar and then move on to his place. When Andrew goes to another room to get a bottle of wine, his phone begins to buzz, and Miranda knocks it into the sink. When Tyler comes back, she says it was an accident and they put it in a bag of rice to dry out before using it. Karen and Andrew are eating dinner when a detective comes to the door to ask about Evander. They explain that Miranda was probably the last person to see Evander. The detective goes to the Kitty Kat Room to look for Miranda, and finds JoJo. The detective has JoJo call Miranda to try to find her, but Miranda doesnt answer.The next day, Karen is looking at the birth certificate that Miranda left, and she calls the adoption agency listed and learns that Miranda was lying about the records. They become suspicious about Mirandas timeline in relation to the death of Karens mother. Andrew tries to reach Tyler by phone to talk about Mirandas weirdness, but he doesnt reach him. Tyler and Miranda are in bed together at Tylers place. She tells Tyler that Karen is her half-sister and that they have the same mom; thats why she came to Philadelphia. Tyler is upset that she came in to their lives lying. Andrew calls on the home phone and reaches Tyler right then. Andrew is alarmed that Miranda is in Tylers house and says that the cops are looking for her to ask her about Evanders death. Miranda overhears, picks up a wine bottle, and hits Tyler on the head with it. Andrew hears it happen over the phone and has the police sent out to Tylers immediately. Karen reaches out to a police officer she knows who looks in to the guests at the hotel in Mexico where Karens mother died. He tells her that on closer look, her mothers suicide looks more like a homicide based on the bruises on her neck and how there were no fingerprints on her suicide note. They induce that Miranda killed Karens mother.The police find Tyler without major injury at his house but Miranda is gone already. She sneaks into Karen and Andrews house where Andrew is, still weakened from his accident. Miranda pulls a knife out of the butcher block and sneaks up behind Andrew and stabs him. Karen comes home right then and fights off Miranda. They both struggle for the knife. Miranda confesses that she killed their mom for rejecting her and made it look like a suicide. Andrew has just enough strength to secretly reach 911 by phone while Miranda is just about to stab Andrew again. A policeman arrives and, when Miranda refuses to drop the knife, he shoots her. Later, Tyler, Andrew, and Karen are having dinner at the house. Theyre celebrating Andrews new promotion to a desk job. Aubrey arrives, bringing wine. Just then, a pop-up invitation from Vacay N Stay shows up on Karens laptop, asking Karen if she wants to re-activate her account. She looks at the message and clicks No, then goes back to her loved ones.
