Roots


            Boston, 1942. A mother walks into a room and catches her son, Timmy, doing a jigsaw puzzle of a naked female. Very irrigated, she says she is going to burn it. She order her son to get her a plastic bag which to dispose of the remains. Tommy instead takes an axe from a closet and murders his mother. He then saws her dead body into pieces and sits down to finish his puzzle. A woman neighbor shows up at the house and knocks on the front door where there is no answer. After phoning the house and still getting no response, she calls the police. Two policemen force their way into the house and enter Timmy's bedroom where they find blood covering the floor. One of the policemen says "Something's been butchered up here. Let's hope it was an animal". Inside a closet, they find the woman's decapitated head. In another closet in the hallway, they find the blood-splattered Timmy who screams "Mommy!" The policemen console him where he tells the officers that a maniac broke in and murdered his mother.40 years later. An unseen person enters a fancy apartment and goes to a closet where he recovers a box containing shoes and clothes, mostly covered in dried blood. Along with it is the remains of the nude jigsaw puzzle.Somewhere on a college campus, a girl is studying in the grass. Nearby, an unknown person is seen working on the shrubbery with a chainsaw. The man dressed in all black clothing approaches and saws off her head with the chainsaw. A little later, Lt. Bracken (Christopher George) and his partner Sgt. Holden (Frank Brana) arrive to investigate the killing. They talk to the college dean (Edmund Purdom) about the chainsaw murder and there were no witnesses and the girl's head is missing. Bracken tells the Dean that they have no suspects and says "We're just out buying clothes without labels and trying them on for size". Willard (Paul Smith) the burly and bearded groundskeeper is outside utilizing a chainsaw similar to the one the killer used.In the campus library that evening, a girl gives a note to a male student, named Kendall (Ian Sera), expressing the desire to "do it underwater". The unseen killer finds the discarded note nearby and goes to the gym swimming pool where the girl is. As the girl swims, the black-clad killer grabs her by her hair when she swims close to a wall and pulls her out of the water and attacks her with his chainsaw. A little later, Willard arrives and turns on the pool lights where he sees Kendall run from the area and finds a bloody chainsaw and the girl in pieces with her entire torso missing. The police arrive and arrest Willard when he attempts to run. The groundskeeper claims to the cops that he just discovered the body and had nothing to do with the killing. Both Bracken and Holden are stumped by the mutilated dead girl with her entire torso missing. "I wonder what he's doing with all the pieces that are missing" says Bracken.The next day at the police station, Dr. Jennings (Gerard Tichy) arrives to provide a profile of the murder. Lt. Bracken brings in Mary Riggs (Lynda Day George), a former tennis player-turned undercover-cop. Bracken explains to Holden that Mary is going undercover to pose as a tennis instructor at the college, and Kendall is going to assist her whenever he can.Sylvia Costa (Isabelle Luque), a Boston Globe reporter, tells Bracken about the rumors she has heard, leading her to believe that a maniac is running loose. Meanwhile, the unseen black-clad killer returns to his apartment and set out to get more pieces of dead women (while continually working on his human jigsaw puzzle). The killer has assembled the girl's severed head to the torso. He now needs a pair of arms and legs.That evening, the killer (his face still unseen and wearing all black clothing along with black leather gloves with a Fedora hat), stalks the deserted campus and follows a girl who has just finished her aerobics routine. She goes to wait for an elevator and appears to recognize him when he approaches. The girl says "oh, it's you." She tells the killer that she is worried about the two recent killings. The girl and man in black get into the elevator together. Soon, he reveals his chainsaw which has has been hiding behind his back. He starts it up saws both of her arms off (in close-up and graphic ultra-gory fashion). On the floor below, Kendall hears a scream and he and two policemen enter the elevator only to discover that the killer has already fled and the armless woman in the elevator. The police call in for medics, but the woman dies before she can tell them anything about what the killer looked like.A little later that night, Kendall sees Mary walking around alone at the deserted campus. While the unseen killer is near, Mary has an odd encounter with the kung fu professor, who attacks her and then explains he is not sure what happened after Mary has kicked him in the groin. Afterwords, Mary leaves with Kendall, but Sylvia is still snooping around. The killer follows Sylvia and murders her.The next day, Mary and Kendall are playing tennis. A fellow tennis player heads into the locker room to shower. The unseen killer appears again and attacks her with his chainsaw. She apparently knows the killer when she screams "You!" The killer chases her into a linen closet where he chainsaws the door down. The killer breaks in and cuts into her torso. At the same time, Mary and Kendall see Willard leaving the locker room and inquire about music being played loudly over the speakers. They eventually find the bloody, dismembered corpse inside the locker room with both of her legs cut off.Kendall then goes to the police station where he meets Holden and thinks that the killer must be part of the university faculty since the killer seems to know when and where to strike and avoid the police. The look into the Dean's past and they discover that when the Dean was younger, his mother was killed by a person who was never found and that he previously changed his name. They figure out that the Dean must be the killer. They figure out that the Dean must like jigsaw puzzles and has been taking pieces of the dead women to make his own human jigsaw puzzle.Meanwhile, Mary visits the Dean in his office where he takes her back to his apartment on campus (the killer's apartment). She is clearly in danger of becoming a victim herself. The Dean tells Mary that she has nice feet, so the Dean drugs her drink and plots to kill her to saw off her feet to fully complete his human jigsaw puzzle. Bracken, Holden, and Kendall burst into the Dean's apartment, forcing him to run. They find Mary sitting on the sofa, temporarily paralyzed by the drug.After the cops leave Kendall there alone, the Dean comes out from behind a curtain (he was only hiding and never fled the apartment) and attacks. Bracken returns and shoots the Dean who falls dead. Afterwords, Holden inadvertently discovers the Dean's human jigsaw puzzle when he leans against a bookshelf and it turns around; the body assembled from the various human parts falls onto Kendall. When Bracken, Holden, Mary and everyone else prepares to leave the scene as the cops take the Dean away in the body bag, Kendall goes for his jacket. Suddenly, the human jigsaw corpse, somehow comes to life and grabs Kendall's crotch and squeezes, vividly castrating him in revenge for her master's death....
    

Pieces


            At Murphy's Hotel in an alpine village somewhere in California, Steve Buckner (Christopher George) prepares to board a dozen hikers into two helicopters to fly up the mountain to Sugar Meadow, where they will begin a days-long nature hike. Local ranger Chico Tucker (Walter Barnes) privately tells Steve that there have been all kinds of accidents lately and maybe this hike isn't a good idea, but Steve refuses to call it off.Later that day, after a brisk trek, the hikers rest on several large rocks where the group is introduced; Professor MacGregor (Richard Jaeckel) takes photographs of eagles and hawks. Frank and Mandy Young (Joe Cedar and Susan Backlinie), a young married couple, confess that they are taking this hike to pull together their shaky marriage. An older woman, Shirley Goodwyn (Ruth Roman), admits that she's only there because her son, Johnny (Bobby Porter), wanted to come, and already she wishes she had stayed home in Beverly Hills. Paul Jenson (Leslie Nielson) is an advertising executive from Los Angeles with an angry, derisive sense of humor. Bob Dennins (Andrew Stevens) and Beth Hughes (Kathleen Bracken) are teenagers in love. Roy Moore (Paul Mantee) is a former professional football player sidelined by cancer. Terry Marsh (Lynda Day George) is a television reporter. The steadiest person among them is Daniel Santee (Michael Santee), an American Indian.During a rest stop, Daniel stands apart from the others, studying the surroundings. Finally, he wonders out loud why everything is so quiet. Other than the wind and the caws from predatory birds, the hills are silent. Jenson, who calls Daniels "Kemo Sabe," says there's nothing to worry about, but several birds, including an owl and a hawk, land next to Johnny, scaring the boy and his mother. Steve and Daniel say they have never seen birds act like that before.In the restaurant of Murphy's Hotel, Ranger Tucker sits down with his friend Burt, the local sheriff, and tells him there's been a spate of rattlesnake bites. At that moment a reporter on the television set over the bar says a White House bulletin is claiming that chemical waste released into the atmosphere has dangerously depleted the ozone layer, which protects all life from the sun's radiation. Tucker admits that the sun has been "peculiar" lately, but dismisses the report as "ozone crap."On the mountain, the hikers stumble upon a camp where a fire is burning and coffee cups are ready to be filled, but nobody is around. Steve says the campers will soon be back. He leads the hikers to a nearby spot to bed down for the night. They build a fire, and while several of the hikers sing campfire songs, Daniel pulls Steve aside to tell him that something strange is going on in the woods. Steve asks him not to say anything to panic the others. The two decide to take turns standing guard. That night, as Terry wonders why the other campers haven't returned, several wolves attack Mandy in her sleeping bag. The campers chase them off, but Mandy's hand has been badly bitten and she needs to get to a hospital.At daybreak, Mandy and Frank leave the others and hike to a nearby ranger tower to call for a helicopter, but birds gather in the trees and circle overhead. Suddenly, hawks swoop down and attack her, and before Frank can chase them off, Mandy falls over a cliff to her death.Meanwhile, as the rest of the hikers continue down the mountain, Johnny picks up snatches of radio reports about an ozone emergency resulting in a chemical imbalance in the forest. When Johnny alarms the other hikers, Shirley shouts at him and accidentally knocks his radio into a creek. When the hikers reach a spot where food has been left for them, the boxes have been ripped apart by raiding animals and nothing is left. Jenson, challenging Steve's competence, says the group should stay there and wait for a helicopter to return, but Steve insists on pushing on down the mountain.Meanwhile, Frank is wading through a creek when he finds a little girl standing on the bank. Frank asks the girl where her parents are, but she is in shock and doesn't react to him until a hawk swoops down and makes her scream. Frank picks her up and carries her.Late that night, Ranger Tucker is awakened by the telephone. Burt tells him the National Guard is in town to evacuate everybody above 5,000 feet where the radiation is the strongest and is making all animals go crazy and attack people. As Tucker hangs up, he hears something rattling and gnawing. He turns on the kitchen light, finds the room empty, and gets a plate of chicken out of the refrigerator. But as Tucker goes into a drawer for a knife, some rats jump onto the table. Tucker tries to stab them, but a couple of rats leap on him and tear his face. Tucker runs upstairs to wake his wife, Rita. They hurry outside and get into their car before several vicious dogs can bite them.At the camp, after wolves attack the hikers again and injure Daniel, Jenson (who is clearly growing more crazy due to the radiation now affecting him) says he's going to walk back up the mountain to the ranger tower, which is closer than the village, and talks Shirley, Johnny, Bob and Beth into going with him. The others continue down the mountain. That night, as lightning flashes and rain pours, Jenson suddenly becomes violent. He calls Shirley a "Beverly Hills bitch" for no reason and threatens to toss Johnny off a cliff. Bob and Beth realize they've made a mistake by coming with Jenson as he is the only human now affected by the sun's radiation, but before they can leave, Jenson kills Bob with a blow from his walking stick and drags Beth away from Shirley and Johnny. While Jenson tries to rape the teenager, however, a bear appears and Jenson wrestles the bear, which kills him by biting his neck out. Shirley and Johnny grab Beth and run away.In the morning, after a night of walking, Frank and the little girl arrive in the village where they started, but everything is quiet. Houses are empty. When Frank opens the door of an abandoned truck, a dead man falls out with fang marks on his face. Outside Murphy's Hotel, a mad dog attacks them. Frank puts the girl inside a vehicle and grabs a hammer from a toolbox. Frank tells her he's going to make a run for his car not far away, and no matter what happens she must stay where she is until he returns. As soon as Frank reaches his car and opens the passenger door, several rattlesnakes inside bite him. This results in the dog attacking Frank and killing him.Meanwhile, Shirley, Johnny and Beth take sanctuary in a grounded Park Ranger helicopter whose pilot has been killed by a pack of dogs. When they wake up hours later, everything is quiet and the dogs are all dead. As Johnny and Shirley step out of the chopper, they hear another helicopter coming and wave their hands as it approaches.Meanwhile, Steve's group is attacked by a another pack of dogs at a camp of dilapidated cabins. Professor MacGregor and Roy, badly mauled as they struggle with the dogs, yell for Steve, Terry and Daniel to run. The three hurry down to the nearby creek and push a raft into the water, but as they push off, the dogs leap onto the raft, forcing Steve, Terry and Daniel overboard. The three hang on as a current catches the raft and pulls it downstream through rapids.In town, soldiers in hazardous-material suits approach Murphy's Hotel. Dead birds and animals lay everywhere, killed by the very same radiation that drove them crazy. Four of the soldiers see the little girl hiding inside a car and rescue her.Not far away, Steve, Terry and Daniel are sleeping on the drifting raft when they hear voices and a distant siren. Looking up, they see a dozen people standing on a bridge, welcoming them back to the normal world.In the final shot, a surviving eagle flies at the camera.
    

Day of the Animals


            Psychiatrist Dr. Parson (Danny Rogers) is struck from behind by an unseen assailant, while sitting outside his beachfront home. Within moments, his daughter, Christie (Mary McDonough), finds his body floating in the swimming pool.Weeks later, a young man named Josh (Denis Mandel) trespasses at the warehouse of his former employer, mortician Hank Andrews (Christopher George). Assisted by his friend, Greg Stevens (David Wallace), Josh attempts to steal a pair of tires as compensation for unpaid back wages. The boys are briefly distracted as they witness the mortician conducting an occult ritual, which includes Eve Parson (Lynda Day George), the doctor's widow. While rolling the tires toward the exit, Josh is accosted by a masked killer, who stabs him repeatedly with a trocar, a tool used in embalming. The killer loads the body into Greg's van, and drives away.That evening Greg is given a ride home by his girlfriend, Christie, and as they kiss goodnight, the attacker approaches them, but retreats when Greg's parents appear. The following day, Sheriff Duncan (Bill Conklin) recovers the van, then questions Greg about Josh's disappearance and the boys' trespassing at the warehouse. While Greg admits guilt, he also tells the sheriff of Hank's ritual, which the mortician strongly denies. The sheriff releases Greg with a warning and continues his search for Josh.Meanwhile, Christie tells her mother, Eve, that someone followed her home, but her concern is dismissed as paranoia brought on by her father's "accidental" death. Christie insists that his death was no accident, and criticizes Eve's complacency. That night, Christie envisions her father's murder in a dream, then sleepwalks through the house and into the swimming pool. When Christie is wakened by a disembodied voice whispering her name, she runs screaming into the house, where she sees a masked face watching her through a window. Although Eve tries to comfort Christie by telling her that she imaged everything, the girl believes herself to be the next victim of her father's killer, and accuses her mother of trying to drive her insane.The following day, Christie and Greg visit Dr. Parson's grave, and encounter Paul Andrews (Bill Paxton), the mortician's son, who recently lost his mother to suicide. Christie and Greg both agree that the eccentric Paul has gotten "weirder" in recent weeks, and place the blame on Hank for forcing the boy to work as an embalmer.One evening, while Greg and Christie are alone in her house, they are subjected to frequent interruptions in electrical and telephone services. When Eve is told of the phenomenon, she again blames her daughter's overactive imagination. Later, the couple suspects Eve and Hank of being romantically involved, and follow them to the warehouse, where the mortician conducts a seance to contact the spirit of Dr. Parson. Paul observes Christie and Greg from a distance, but says nothing as they leave the building.When the couple returns to the Parson home, Christie asks Greg for a moratorium on their relationship until she can better manage her fears. That night, she has another dream about her father's death, and resumes sleepwalking, this time arming herself with a knife. The masked figure appears outside the window, asking to touch her, and she plunges the knife through the glass, shocking herself back into consciousness. Christie seeks comfort from her mother, who explains that her late husband was Paul's psychiatrist. The boy developed a psychotic obsession with Christie following his mother's death, prompting Dr. Parson to recommend he be institutionalized. Based on these facts, Christie deduces that Paul killed her father. She apologizes to Eve for her erratic behavior, and following an embrace, the women return to their bedrooms.While Eve sleeps, the stalker stabs her to death, then pursues Christie around the house. Believing she has evaded the killer, Christie calls police, but is interrupted as her stalker grabs her from behind and reveals himself to be Paul. He renders her unconscious with chloroform and drives her to the mortuary. Unable to stay away, Greg returns to the Parson home as Paul drives away with Christie and her mother's body. He follows Paul to the mortuary, where the killer injects Christie with a sedative and dresses her in a wedding gown.Hank arrives moments later and accuses Paul of stalking Christie and killing her father. Paul states that Dr. and Mrs. Parson needed to be punished for opposing his plan to marry Christie. When Hank orders his son to surrender to the sheriff, Paul responds by stabbing him.Greg enters the mortuary to find Paul declaring that he and Christie are to be married, and standing over Eve and Hank's bodies. He locks Greg in the embalming room, and drives Christie and the two corpses to the warehouse for a wedding ceremony. Greg escapes the mortuary, arms himself with an ax, and follows Paul to the warehouse.Surrounded by the preserved bodies of his victims, Paul pretends to conduct a Mozart symphony, then tells the body of his mother that he "faked" her death to protect her from being institutionalized for her multiple suicide attempts. As Paul is about to cut Christie with a scalpel, Greg threatens the killer with his ax, but Paul knocks the weapon out of his hands. As Paul is about to stab Greg, the sleepwalking Christie grabs the ax and sinks the blade into Paul's back, killing him. She sobs as she regains consciousness, and Greg assures her the danger has passed. In the final shot, Mrs. Andrews (Donna Garrett) suddenly springs to life and runs at the couple with a knife in her hand.
