Behind the Burly Q


            Tom Hanks plays the train conductor of a magical train heading for the North Pole, in addition to five other parts. Based on a storybook written by Chris Van Allsburg, the Christmas story tells of a boy who has reached an age when he begins to have doubts believing in Santa. Late one Christmas Eve, the young boy is lying awake waiting for the sound of sleigh bells ringing from Santa's sleigh. Five minutes to midnight his room begins to shake, and he hears a thunderous sound outside his window. The boy jumps from his bed and sees a train in the middle of his street. The boy grabs his robe and rushes out the front door to look at the train. The train's conductor asks the boy if he is getting aboard. The boy asks, "Where are you going?' 'To the North Pole, of course, this is the Polar Express!' At the last minute, the boy jumps on the train and finds other young boys and girls going to the North Pole. Their adventure begins. On the train he meets lots of other children, among them a know-it-all, a clever girl and a poor boy. During the trip to the North Pole, there are several complications and complications before the end of the journey comes. Among others, the tracks are covered with ice and a child loses its ticket. When they reach the north pole, the children meet Santa Claus, and the boy gets the very first Christmas present of the year, a sleigh bell from Santa Claus' sleigh. They return safely to their homes in time for Christmas Day, and the boy finds the Christmas Present from Santa beneath his tree, after which the story concludes.

            They were as close as any two sisters. They sang, danced and played musical instruments. They were the highest paid act in vaudeville. They were Americas sweethearts in the 30s and 40s, the biggest celebrities of their day. And they were Siamese twins. Known variously as The Brighton United Twins, The San Antonio Twins, or simply Daisy and Violet Hilton.Their incredible story begins in 1908 in Brighton, England when their mother sold them to her midwife, so horrified was she that she had brought freaks into the world. What followed was a Dickensian childhood being put on display in pubs and wax museums, traveling the world in carnivals and fairs. They made great sums of cash but never saw the money.They won their freedom from their legal guards in a sensation trial in San Antonio. Now on their own, the girls could indulge in romance. Violet tried to obtain a marriage license, but was denied in dozens of states because she was a Siamese twin. Discouraged, her fiancé vanished from her life. A short time later her manager arranged a marriage for publicitys sake at the 1936 Texas Centennial for a paying audience.The girls starred in Freaks, (listed by the US National Film Registry) and the 1950s exploitation Chained for Life.Here for the first time is the story of their life, a rich history of carnival and circus life, covering early American entertainment from vaudeville, burlesque, sideshows and Hollywood.

From Zero to I Love You


            MABEL, MABEL, TIGER TRAINER is the third documentary by award winning documentarian Leslie Zemeckis about the world's first female tiger trainer, Mabel Stark. During the heyday of the circus, Stark thrilled audiences with her 18 Sumatran Tiger act, the meanest of all tigers with Stark surviving countless life-threatening maulings. Her body was a 'network of scars.' Born into poverty in Tennessee, Stark was raised on a tobacco farm in Kentucky. She ran away, eventually joining the circus as a cooch dancer. Always an outsider, Stark clawed her way up to the circus hierarchy, working with goats, riding the horses and training lions. But it was the tigers she fell in love with. It wouldn't be until she married a renowned big-cat trainer that she was given a chance with the 'stripes.' The marriage wouldn't last (nor would the three or four that followed), but Stark's enduring love for the tigers would. She hand-raised many tigers, walking them on the beach of Venice, California, and tucking them in to sleep at home. Eventually, she taught one tiger a wrestling act that horrified the gasping audience as the 300 - 400 pound animal leapt onto Stark's back and brought her to the ground. Nothing stood between the petite blonde woman and death, save a whip and a chair. Stark was determined that nothing, and no one would get in the way of her relationship with the cats; not even a husband who was an embezzler. During the 1920s and '30s, there was no bigger name than Stark's on the circus marquee, and for more than 30 years she trained and performed at the renowned Jungleland in Thousand Oaks, site of movies such as DOCTOR DOOLITTLE and all of the TARZAN films. She also worked Hollywood films, doubling for Mae West. MABEL is the story of a woman who would do anything for her tigers.
