            It's Halloween in New York, but it's not quite Sam's [Larry Fessenden] day. His father
has recently died, he's just broken up with his girlfriend Liza [Heather Woodbury], and he
gets robbed on the subway. Already drunk, he goes to a Halloween party at
the apartment of friends Nick [Aaron Beall] and Rae [Patricia Coleman] and there meets Anna [Meredith Snaider]. Anna walks
home with him, but, when Sam has to dash back to Nick and Rae's apartment
because he took the wrong coat, Anna disappears.Several nights and a lot of beers later, Sam runs into Anna at a
festival. They go for a ride on the ferris wheel, and Anna jerks him off
in Battery Park and bites his lip in the heat of passion. Sam wakes up the
next morning, lying alone in the grass and Anna is gone. That night, Sam
has to stand in for Lenny, who works as a waiter at the restaurant that
Sam manages. Lenny has been seeing some chick on a boat and has suddenly
disappeared. Everyone figures he's just run off. After the restaurant
closes, Sam goes outside to find Anna waiting for him. They go out to
dinner (Anna isn't hungry, but Sam wolfs down a big red hamburger), and
then they go back to Sam's apartment, Anna making a point of being invited
in.Sam and Anna are becoming an item. One night, while Sam is chopping
garlic for dinner, Anna drops by. She can't stand the smell in the house
so they go up on the roof to have sex. When Sam wakes up, Anna is gone.
Sam meets Liza for coffee. He tells Liza about Anna, and Liza is visably
shaken. In the middle of their conversation, Sam feels sick and goes to
the bathroom. He doesn't return until Liza is gone.It is the funeral for Sam's father, and Sam is giving the eulogy.
Afterwards, the mourners adjourn for a few drinks, and Anna suddenly shows
up. Sam and Anna go walking in Central Park, and they are chased by
wolves. Anna raises her hand to the wolves, and they cease the chase. When
Sam and Anna come out of the park, they come upon an accident in which a
small boy is injured. Anna picks him up and carries him to the emergency
room. Afterwards, Sam and Anna find a storage closet, where Anna bites his
arm while they're having sex.Sam is feeling "drained" and looking forward to spending Thanksgiving
with Nick and Rae at Rae's grandmother's house on the beach. But rest is
not to be his. Sam's first night there, Anna comes to him in his sleep.
The next day is Thanksgiving, and Anna joins them for dinner but doesn't
eat anything. ("Cramps," she says.) Sam eats his dinner but barfs it up.
After dinner, while Sam and Nick drink shots, Rae and Anna go for a walk.
Anna comes on to Rae and is just about to bite her neck, when Rae backs
off. The next day, the three of them (Nick, Rae, and Sam) return to the
city.Sam is losing it fast. He tries to speak to Liza, but she blames it
on his drinking. Anna accuses him of pining for Liza, and they break up.
Sam attempts to talk with Nick about Anna, describing how she is like a
parasite. Every time they make love, she bites him and sucks up the blood.
He's never seen her eat or drink; neither has he ever seen her in the
daytime.Nick laughs, and tells Sam he has a real propensity for Gothic
melodrama. "Vampirism is everywhere," Nick lectures. "It is hiding in our
hearts. It is at the bottom of a bottle or a needle in the arm. It is 500
channels of insipid cultural drivel, the advertizing and gluttony draining
us of our ability to think. But believe me, it is not to be found embodied
in Anna. She probably belongs to one of those bloodsucking cults, but she
is not a vampire!" Nick goes on to tell Sam to lay off the booze, pull
himself together, and get an AIDS test. Then he invites Sam out for drink,
but Sam refuses.When Sam finds his cat slain, he runs to Liza's apartment. When Liza
doesn't answer her door, Sam lets himself in and finds Liza in the same
condition as his cat. Realizing that he is in big trouble, Sam tries to
help himself. He buys a bag of garlic and smears it on his windows. He
buys a package of beefsteaks and drinks the blood. He calls Nick for help
and, when Nick comes to the door, Sam opens it...only to find Anna
standing there, teeth bared.Sam locks himself in the bathroom and pulls out the rod from a towel
rack. While Anna pretends to take a phone call from Liza, Sam cautiously
opens the bathroom door to find Anna again standing there with her teeth
bared. She knocks him down and bites him in the neck. Then she screws him
while drinking his blood. Sam reaches for the towel rod, hits her with it,
then locks himself in the bedroom and passes out on the bed.While Nick and Rae make their way to Sam's door, Anna comes in
through the bedroom window (on the fifth floor!) and leaps on top of Sam.
She offers him a taste of her blood, but Sam refuses and tries to escape
through the window. Anna tries to pull him back in. Just as Nick breaks in
the bedroom door, Sam and Anna plunge to the ground below. Nick and Rae
run outside to where Sam and Anna lay dead on the cement. Moments later,
Anna's body disappears. A short while later, a boat leaves the harbor.

            It is 1983. Frustrated with living in the dorms with her oversexed and messy roommate, Samantha Hughes (Jocelin Donahue) rents a small apartment. Although the landlady (Dee Wallace) agrees not to charge her a deposit, Samantha still needs to come up with $300 for the first month's rent. She answers an advertisement for a babysitter. The man who placed the ad tells her that he and his wife need her that night while they attend a party to watch the lunar eclipse; the moon will be entirely in the earth's shadow at midnight. Although he behaves oddly on the phone, Samantha's desperation leads her to accept the offer.Samantha's best friend Megan (Greta Gerwig) drives her to the job, which is at a secluded house in the woods. There, Mr. Ulman (Tom Noonan), the man who placed the ad, reveals that Samantha will not be babysitting but taking care of his elderly mother in law. Samantha tries to back out but when Mr. Ulman offers her $400 she agrees to stay over Megan's objections. Megan leaves. On the drive home, she stops in a nearby cemetary to have a smoke. When her lighter malfunctions, a young man, Victor (AJ Bowen) suddenly appears in her window and offers her a light. He then asks her if she's the babysitter. When she says no, Victor shoots her in the face, killing her.Samantha meets Mrs. Ulman (Mary Woronov) when she emerges from the basement. Mrs. Ulman explains she was looking for her furs then makes Samantha uncomfortable by commenting on how desirable she must be to young boys. The Ulmans give Samantha half of the babysitting fee plus some money to order a pizza. Mr. Ulman assures Samantha that the mother in law will be no trouble and will probably keep to herself in her upstairs room. They also leave a phone number where they can be reached if anything goes wrong.Samantha tries to do homework but finds the house creepy. She orders a pizza and, while dancing around the house listening to her Walkman, accidentally breaks a vase. While cleaning it up, she sees that the closet is full of fur coats. She also finds a box full of photos of a family other than the Ulmans, posing in front of the house and a car that Samantha saw in the driveway earlier. Victor delivers the pizza to Samantha, then wanders around the property to keep an eye on her.Unbeknownst to Samantha, the family she saw in the photos lies slaughtered in an upstairs bedroom, arranged as parts of a bloody pentagram. Samantha hears strange noises and, armed with a knife, goes to explore the attic. At midnight, all of the lights in the house blow out. Samantha sees a hand open the attic door, and she passes out.When she awakes, she is gagged and tied to a slab in the basement, surrounded by satanic symbols. The Ulmans -- including their son, Victor -- and a dwarfish demon enter. The demon draws a pentagram on Samantha's belly, then tries to force her to drink blood from a bizarre animal skull. Samantha breaks free of her bonds and rushes upstairs. Seeing Megan's body in the kitchen, Samantha grabs a knife. Victor chases her and shoots her in the shoulder but she slits his throat, killing him. Samantha is wracked with abdominal pain and flashes of demonic faces. Mrs. Ulman corners her in a bedroom and tells her that it is too late for Samantha to alter the plan. Mrs. Ulman is distracted when she believes the eclipse is sending her a message from Satan, and Samantha stabs her in the back. Grabbing Victor's gun, Samantha flees from the house, pursued by Mr. Ulman, who was wounded when Samantha escaped from the basement. He tries to calm her down and tells her that Satan will arrive as soon as the eclipse is over. Believing it to be the only solution, Samantha shoots herself in the head.Local newscasters talk about how astronomers are confused that the moon seemed to move through the eclipse more quickly than it should have. Samantha lays comatose in a hospital bed but she and her baby are expected to make a full recovery.

            There's little in the first half of Ana Asensio's feature-length directorial debut that foreshadows its outrageous second half, except maybe the credit for indie-horror distributor Glass Eye Pix. At first, it seems odd that Larry Fessenden would have produced what seems like an archetypal Sundance selection about multicultural strivers in New York City: The story focuses on one, Luciana (Asensio), an immigrant from Spain, running away from her past, struggling-often along the F line, in Brooklyn-to survive and find odd jobs.Most Beautiful Island follows Luciana during a not-atypical day: to a doctor she can't afford, because she has no insurance; to her apartment, where most things in the fridge have "Not Yours" notes taped onto them by her roommate. We see her pick up insolent children from school and walk them home, and we see her dressed up in a provocative yet silly costume, handing out fliers. Then, a fellow immigrant and friend, Olga (Natasha Romanova), from the flyering job, asks Luciana to fill in for her at another gig, which sounds too good to be true: Get paid $2,000 to show up at a cocktail party and look pretty-no sex-stuff required, just a black dress and some high heels.Up to this point, Most Beautiful Island feels like a meandering, ethnographic quasi-documentary, set all over New York City, on familiar streets but also in back rooms and back alleys many people don't often see. It's set in a milieu of hustling immigrant women, living within a culture of seemingly infinite economic possibilities that all seem somehow out of reach. Each has her own reasons for being in the city and her own ways of making money-through Craigslist, or networks of other women in similar circumstances. Luciana often relies on the kindnesses of other immigrants: the shopkeepers who say she can pay tomorrow, and give her an extra little treat, or the cabbies who shrug off her inability to pay. But others tell her that we make our own luck and get what we deserve, espousing a moralistic social Darwinism that's brought to life in the film's second half, in the form of a biting metaphor.Olga's job offer, which leads Luciana to a cinderblock-lined basement along the West Side Highway, is indeed too good to be true. Women stand in narrow circles, drawn and numbered in chalk, in which they're ogled by ladies and gentlemen in evening dress holding champagne-and stern men in black prevent the women from leaving. We're made to wait there with them, airs of tension, menace, and mystery getting denser as the women are led one by one into a "party room," to which the well-dressed have retired. When Luciana is finally called in, the moment is nightmarish-a relatively simple yet quite unexpected scenario that's stomach-twisting in its elemental horror but also in the fact that many of these women, abject in their desperation, have volunteered to participate, putting their lives at risk for sport and cash. The experience seems as dehumanizing as a sexual assault.Many genre movies in which bad things happen to women end with them fighting back, but here, as people surely would in real life, they just take the money and run. There's no grand climax, no wicked revenge or Grand Guignol comeuppance, just a shot of a stretch of New York City highway, a faded sign, painted on a brick wall, visible if you squint: BIG APPLE BIG DREAMS. Its irony turns grotesque if you remember the film's opening text: "Inspired by true events." This is how the other half really lives today.
