Edison: The Wizard of Light


            Simon is a young orphan being raised under the care of his uncle Tom. The early scenes of the film show him filming his conversation in the hospital with his dying grandfather. Through the eyes of Simon we see the grandfather as a caring, wise man, while through the perspective of his uncle we see the racist, backwards side. Simon's grandfather hated Simon's father and claims that he intended to kill Simon's mother in the car crash when, as Simon finds out at the film's conclusion, he had an eye condition. This condition prevented him from being able to drive at night, as the glare from oncoming headlights would blind him. The evening of the car crash reveals a different side of the story, causing the memories of each character to meet head on, connecting disparate stories of each character to unite in an Egoyanesque conclusion.Simon's family narrative is cleverly knit into a news story presented to Simon by his high school French teacher as a translation exercise. An article is read by the teacher about an attempted bombing of an aircraft by a man who put explosives in his pregnant wife's luggage. Simon gets the idea to translate the story and write it from the perspective of the child in the woman's womb. The teacher encourages Simon to develop his story as a drama exercise, however Simon presents it to the class and to the world via the Internet as if he really was that child. The teacher's silence, as we find out later, is owing to her relationship with Simon's late father who died, with his mother, in a car crash when he was still a child. The narrative of the car crash and the attempted bombing of the plane become intertwined as a way for the characters to deal with their past experiences, which they have all been trying to deny.The film is about a search for identity in a digital age where the truth is oftentimes irrelevant. Simon's story of his suicide bomber father is met on the Internet with sympathy, anger, and even support as we see a skinhead on webcam telling Simon that his father was a hero. The alienation experienced by Simon in relation to the world-wide response he receives to this made-up story ultimately serves as a mechanism that forces him to turn away from his computer and video screen to face the actual issues he experienced as a child. Simon's story takes a twist that involves all the other characters in his life, everyone's narrative culminating in the piecing together of a fragmented past that needed to be re-examined in order for those in the present to be healed and re-connect with the people in their lives.

            Someone... or something... is killing the monks at the abbey in Whitechapel, and Sherlock Holmes [Matt Frewer] and Dr Watson [Kenneth Welsh] have been called to investigate. Rumor is that it's the work of a vampire brought back from a recent mission in Guiana. In all cases, the victims have been found with two large puncture wounds on their necks. On the wall, written in blood, is usually a message like "As you have sinned against me, so shall I exact my revenge."Brother Marstoke [Shawn Larence] believes that the killings might be retribution from Desmodo, a fiercesome demon from South America who usually appears as a giant vampire bat. He explains that, while in Guiana, he had a falling out with Dr Chagas over the killing of a colony of bats, which Marstoke was led to believe carried a plague. Hector de la Rosa [Danny Blanco Hall] actually saw the killer and confirms that it had the face of Desmodo, just as depicted in a statue of Desmodo in Marstoke's collection of South American gods and demons that he brought back from Guiana.The next morning, Holmes and Watson go right to work. The first thing they do is speak with Sra de la Rosa [Isabel Dos Santos] , who was the one to discover the first body. When they mention the name of Dr Chagas, Sra de la Rosa tightens in fear. She considers Chagas a 'vampiro' because of his work with vampire bats. As Sra de la Rosa, in a whispered voice, tells Holmes about Chagas, the ground suddenly starts to tremble. An omen?Next is to investigate the church premises. Holmes checks out the crypt. Nothing there except for a colony of bats hanging from the ceiling. Upon these discoveries and the knowledge that the abbey doors were locked at the time of the killings, Holmes deduces that the killer may be in the abbey itself. That evening, he calls a meeting of all the brothers and sisters and asks for the names of those who were on the Guiana mission (Marstoke, Brother Caulder, Brother Sinclair (one of the first to die), Brother John, Brother Abel, Sister Helen, and Sister Margaret) as the killings began just after their return. Holmes wonders whether or not there is some connection. He also advises everyone, whether or not they were on the mission, to be extremely careful and to never go anywhere alone.Unfortunately, Abel [Tom Rack] has been left alone to sleep as he has been ill since returning from Guiana. Holmes, Watson and Marstoke rush to Abel's bedroom where they find Hector comforting a terrified Abel, who says that he was awakened by a big, dark thing that tried to bite him but flew out the window when he screamed. Watson looks out the window, but it is too dark to see anything.Next on the list of investigations is for Watson to get an analysis of the blood used in the writing on the wall while Holmes talks with "vampiro" Chagas, who has taken lodging at 4, Renfield Place in Whitechapel. It turns out that Chagas [Neville Edwards] is a naturalist who studies bats. He calls them his "children," which caused many in Guiana to think of him as a "vampiro". Even the Whitechapel locals think Chagas is the vampire,
since he is known to roam the streets at night. Indeed, only a few minutes after speaking with Chagas, Holmes observes him leaving his flat.It is now 9:15 pm, and Sr Helen [Cary Lawrence] and Bro John [Matthew Tiffin] are leaving one of their charities to return to the abbey when Helen (who is blind) hears moaning in an alley. John goes to help and is attacked by Desmodo. Desmodo then turns on Helen, but she is saved when someone enters the alley and chases away her attacker. Unfortunately, John is dead, with two holes in his neck.The next morning, Holmes goes to investigate the alley where the killing took place. When Holmes finds out that Inspector Jones has arrested Chagas as the killer, on the basis that he was seen leaving his flat last night just before the killing and he returned with blood on his gloves, Holmes poopoohs the idea since he was with Chagas until shortly after 9, after which he observed Chagas leaving several minutes later and going north to Whitecastle Road. Since the killing took place on Demeter Street, in the opposite direction, no one could backtrack and cover that distance in 10 minutes... unless he could fly. Jones isn't convinced but does agree to have the blood analyzed. Just then, Jones discovers that Chagas has escaped through an open window.Holmes and Watson go to investigate Bro John's body. Watson notices something peculiar about the two holes on his neck... there are no marks from the lower teeth. Either the wounds were made by someone missing a lower mandible, he deduces, or they were made by some other means.Next is to interview Sr Helen, but first they stop to see how Abel is faring after the fright he received last night. He's quite well and is working on a model of the hermitage and has no further information to offer. Meanwhile, Marstoke is praying in the church when the ground starts to shake again. An earthquake? And Sr Helen doesn't have any idea how anyone in the abbey might have sinned against anyone else, either gods or humans. All she can remember about her attack is hearing a groaning and a sound like something scraping and then smelling a slightly pungent, oily odor as the killer approached her.Now to interview Brother Caulder [Joel Miller] but he has gone to visit his sister, the psychic known as Madame Karavsky [Kathleen Fee]. She is attempting to get
insights about the killings from objects her brother has brought her. Holmes puts no stock in her insights, but he does learn that Caulder considers Chagas to be the devil's disciple and sees Marstoke's collection of artifacts as sacrilegious. Caulder also tells Holmes that it was Brother Abel who pinpointed the bats as the source of the plague and
insisted on their irradication, a contradiction of what Marstoke told Holmes... that it was he (Marstoke) who had insisted on irradicating the bats.On his way back to the abbey, Holmes is pushed into the path of trotting horses but manages to roll away just in time to see a black-cloaked figure running away. Shortly thereafter, Watson, who is walking around the church, sees a hooded figure sneak in through the crypt door. Watson follows and comes upon Caulder just returning from his
sister's house. Watson inquires as to whether he always uses the crypt door, but Caulder claims that he came in through the front door, an alibi that Hector confirms.So many suspects, so little evidence, but Holmes is beginning to see a thread. Still, a little verification is in order. First a visit to Abel who is putting the finishing paint to his model. Then, a visit to Chagas... but not to his flat, rather, to an old house where he nurtures his colony of endangered bats. Just as Holmes says he can clear Chagas' name, however, Inspector Jones raids the house and arrests them both.Back at the abbey, Watson gets a note from Holmes regarding his arrest and the fact that he can do no more while he is incarcerated. Marstoke decides that the only thing left is to leave the abbey in hopes of taking the curse with him. He intends to spend the night in prayer and leave the next morning. As Marstoke prays, Desmodo attacks him. What ho! It is not Marstoke praying; it is Holmes. Just as Inspector Jones shows up, guns drawn, the ground begins to tremble again and a large statue falls on Desmodo, killing him. Holmes removes the Desmodo mask to reveal Brother Abel. He is also wearing a glove with a garden claw in the palm, which Holmes names as the implement used to puncture the necks of his victims.In the epilogue, Watson explains that the earthquake that saved Holmes was actually a subsidence due to an extension of the Underground which is being constructed right under the abbey. Holmes tells how, when Inspector Jones learned that the blood on Chagas' glove was bat blood, not human blood, he agreed to help Holmes in his little deception. With regards to whether Chagas argued with Marstoke or Abel regarding the
irradication of the bats, Chagas says that it was both. First Abel insisted on their irradication. Marstoke took up the argument only after Abel was stricken with the plague.How did Holmes know it was Abel? Holmes explains that he saw Abel drinking tea with his left hand and, because the writing on the wall slanted to the left, Abel became the prime suspect. Also, the pungent, oily smell that Sr Helen smelled was confirmed as the same odor as the paint Abel was using for his model. Finally, the sight of a gardener with
a two-pronged garden tool confirmed Holmes' suspicion that a metal implement made the scratching that Sr Helen heard and was also used to make the holes in his victims' necks. And, thus, the Whitechapel vampire was laid to rest.[Original synopsis by bj_kuehl]

            Lisa Temple (Justine Bateman) lies comatose in a hospital bed, the victim of a vicious assault. Upon awakening, she has no memory of her previous life, and certainly no recollection of her husband Paul's (Peter Outerbridge) efforts to divorce her. Police Detective Washburn (Elizabeth Lennie) investigating the assault has discovered Lisa was at her restaurant the night before it happened spending several hours with a large man with a mustache (James Purcell). Lisa's engagement ring was stolen which made Paul a suspect. The man with the mustache tries to visit Lisa in the hospital but only steals flowers for Lisa without leaving a card.
Returning to her unfamiliar palatial home with still-leery Paul, Lisa is reintroduced to Bonnie Temple (Amy Stewart), Paul's little sister, who hates Lisa even more than Paul. Eventually, Bonnie reveals to Lisa that something "changed" Lisa a few years ago, totally turning her world upside down, transforming Lisa into a mean-spirited terror who constantly criticized Bonnie and moved all of Paul's things into the guest room. Yet no one, on advice from her psychiatrist, Dr. Holcross (Kenneth Welsh), will tell her exactly what happened to her. There is also a mysterious locked room in their home for which only Paul has the key.
Lisa slowly begins to remember her early life with Paul. At Paul's air charter business, she remembers the collector car Paul drove on their first date to the beach. They take a drive there at Lisa's beckoning and she recalls their first date. Later, the police detective again stops to speak to Paul, who has slowed divorce proceedings with his attorney and is appreciating the new personality in Lisa. Paul tells the detective there are things Lisa is better off not remembering.
Meanwhile, the man with the mustache is clean shaven, has taken on the alias Mr. Brown, and has taken a maintenance position with Paul's company. Bonnie arrives home from school after an uncomfortable encounter with a boy she likes. Lisa buoys her confidence. Photos Lisa has found restore her memory of her wedding to Paul. Mr. Brown is seen near Paul's car before he leaves work for home. Paul has a small accident when his breaks fail.
Bonnie greets Paul on his return home after the accident a bit afraid because it reminds her of the past. Lisa remembers her honeymoon from the photos. She notices a photo of two men with her in the restaurant. Paul does not know them but says they were probably friends of hers from when they were leading separate lives. Lisa says she does not want to lead a separate life any more. Meanwhile, Brown has dozens of photos of himself and Lisa tacked up in his apartment.
The next morning, Anna (Jackie Richardson), their maid, has a migraine, so Lisa takes it upon herself to make breakfast. Her souffle deflates much to the hilarity of Bonnie and Paul. In Paul office, Lisa hear a voice message from Paul's lawyer about the need to file for divorce. Paul tells Lisa she is different now since her injury and that he thought she had given up on him. At her psychiatrist appointment, the doctor tells Lisa that the family needs to know she won't hurt them when the memories of the past resurface.
Lisa helps Bonnie with a new hairstyle before going to bed. She tells Paul she wants to be his friend and they shake on it. They decide to go to a party with friends Lisa wasn't very tolerant of in the past. Lisa is nervous at the party, but makes a good impression. Paul and Lisa leave for a weekend at the cabin. They hike through the woods reliving memories and make love by the fireplace.
Meanwhile, Brown picks up his newly adjusted and sighted gun from the gun shop wearing a diamond ring on a chain around his neck. Lisa and Bonnie go shopping. She sees her restaurant and steps inside. There, Lisa remembers Wesley, the restaurant's bartender, who tell her that the mustached man in the photo was someone she met with the night of the assault, knew well, and it was the only time he ever saw her take off her engagement ring.
Lisa has to stop short on the street on the way home. Bonnie is frightened saying it reminds her of the accident she was in with her parents. The car phone rings. Anna tells Lisa the police have found the men who assaulted her. Detective Washburn tells Lisa that the men who attacked her were after her credit cards. She shows the detective a photo of two men and her in the restaurant. After Lisa leaves, police identify the mustached man as Joe Dooley who is known to do the dirty work for a mobster. Later, Lisa confides to Dr. Holcross that she must have done something in her life to separate herself from her family, but she doesn't know what.
Bonnie has a date with Jody Mueller (Matthew Smith). Words said at the door as she departs for her date, trigger a memory in Lisa. She takes Paul's keys and opens the mysterious locked door in their home to find their child's bedroom. Lisa remember that their child was killed in the same accident that killed Paul's parents. Lisa breaks down and Joe leaves. Anna tries to console Lisa, encouraging her not to push everyone out of her life again. Lisa finds Paul at the country cabin. She tells him that she is responsible for everything the old Lisa did to separate them, but that she, the new Lisa loves him and doesn't want to lose him again.
Early the next morning with Paul still in bed, Lisa sees a reflection and goes out into the woods to investigate. There she finds Joe Dooley with his gun. He tells her to leave and get an alibi. Lisa recalls telling Joe to eliminate her pain the night before her assault. She tries to stop Joe telling him everything is alright now. Joe, obsessed with Lisa, will not comply. Paul calls to Lisa and she runs toward him. As she nears Paul, Joe shoots and Lisa goes down. He continues to shoot at Paul and misses twice. Paul grabs his gun from the cabin and fires back. Joe's next shot hits Paul in the thigh. Paul loses his gun and goes down. Joe approaches him and points the gun at his chest, telling him how his wife wanted him to feel her pain. Lisa grabs Paul's gun and shoots Joe before he can pull the trigger.
At the hospital, Lisa is recovering. Detective Washburn says there will be no charges. Lisa shot in self-defense. Joe forgives Lisa for the past and the couple pledges to begin a new life together.
    

Harlequin: Another Woman

The Middle Man


            The film opens at a rural home as two people scramble outside pursued by two armed men. One of the fleeing is shot and wounded while the other frantically runs off into the night. The two men - one older, the other younger, approach the wounded woman and one hands a canister of gasoline to the other. After the woman is doused, one of the men drops a lit cigarette on her - burning her to death - as they get in their car to presumably pursue their other victim. In the distance, a figure watches the grisly scene, dressed from head to toe in a white robe with only a black triangle at the center of the face-mask.Elsewhere, police officer Daniel Carter sits in his squad car on a country road. After checking in with dispatch, Daniel spots someone crawl out of the treeline on their hands and knees. Daniel approaches, thinking it to be an intoxicated teenager but hurriedly whisks him away in the backseat of his car when he sees that the man is delirious and covered in blood. Daniel contacts dispatch and asks which hospital is closest to his current location. The dispatcher tells him that the closest one may not be prepared to deal with the situation as they're in the process of closing down after a fire ravaged an entire section of the building. With the next closest hospital still twenty minutes away and unsure of the extent of the man's injuries, Daniel reluctantly speeds towards his only option.When Daniel brings the man through the front door the nurse at the front desk scrambles for help and calls Dr. Richard Powell and another nurse (Beverly) who takes the man away to be examined. Daniel takes a moment during the silence to say hello to teenage Maggie and her grandfather Ben who have come in that night for a check up on Maggie's far-along pregnancy.After the doctor discovers heroin needle marks on the man's arms Daniel realizes he has the junkie's blood on his uniform and goes to clean it off - being brought a cup of coffee by the nurse at the front desk who is revealed to be Allison - Daniel's estranged wife. When Allison leaves, Dr. Powell approaches him and tells Daniel to take it easy on Allison and that he understands all too well what it's like to lose a child.In another part of the hospital, nursing intern Kim sits in the room of patient Cliff annoying him with her boredom and frustration at having been assigned to a hospital that's understaffed and in the process of moving out. When Cliff tells Kim he's going to sleep she leaves the room.Shortly thereafter as Daniel roams the halls of the hospital he sees Beverly standing over Cliff and something doesn't seem right. As he approaches closer he sees that Beverly has shoved a pair of scissors into the boy's skull through his eye which she slowly pulls back out. Daniel draws his sidearm and confronts Beverly who slowly turns around to reveal that she has nearly removed her entire face. As Daniel demands that Beverly put the scissors down she begins to further slice away at the remaining skin and tells him that it's not her real face. When Beverly begins to approach him, Daniel shoots and kills her. As Allison, Kim, and Dr. Powell rush to investigate, an overwhelmed Daniel stumbles into the nearest bathroom, throws up, and then passes out.While unconscious, Daniel has visions of a dark and desolate landscape with swirling clouds above, a sinister looking nebula somewhere in space, and a black triangular mass.When he comes to, Daniel is fervent about calling in the incident despite Allison and Dr. Powell's pleas for him to take it easy. They also inform him that while he was passed out a state trooper had arrived at the hospital. Daniel finds the trooper (Mitchell) and asks him how he arrived so quickly. Mitchell explains to him that he's investigating a mass murder that happened at a house not far away and he's there for the man that Daniel had brought in earlier that night. Aware of what happened with Beverly, Mitchell then berates Daniel for the situation he can't seem to get control of and even insults Daniel by referencing how great of a police officer his father was and suggests that he would've handled things better.Daniel, still insistent about calling in the incident with Beverly to dispatch leaves the hospital for his car parked just outside. When he's unable to reach anyone Daniel notices a figure wearing all white except a black triangle over the face. When he tries to speak to and approach the figure a loud foghorn is heard in the distance and a lights of the hospital flicker. The mysterious man attacks Daniel and manages to puncture his chest with a knife before being tossed off.Daniel flees back into the hospital and once again passes out - having similar visions as before - as Allison, Kim, and Dr. Powell see to his bleeding wound. Shortly after Daniel awakens a scream is heard from the junkie's room and Mitchell and Daniel rush to investigate. Inside a grotesque, twisted, and tentacled Beverly attempts to attack the junkie before the two police officers manage to rescue him and lock the creature inside.Frightened by the creature and seeing that the hospital has become surrounded by figures dressed like the one whom attacked Daniel, the group panics. Suddenly the two men from the start of the film burst into the hospital and at gun-point demand that junkie be handed over to them. As Daniel and Mitchell try and de-escalate the situation, the junkie grabs Maggie and holds a scalpel to her throat. As the tension rises, Dr. Powell slowly approaches the junkie and tries to get him to release Maggie but is stabbed in the neck as falls to the floor - dead.The Beverly creature suddenly emerges through another doorway and takes Mitchell away. Taking advantage of the confusion, Ben knocks the junkie unconscious and saves Maggie. Daniel follows after the creature with a fire-axe and turns a corner to see it holding a barely alive Mitchell, forcing its tentacles down his throat and into his eye sockets. The two strange men appear and begin attacking the creature - killing it and chopping off Mitchell's head in the process.Unsure of what may happen, the group takes Mitchell's body, strap it to a gurney, and set it on fire before rolling it outside into the parking lot. As the group tries to make sense of what's happening, Daniel manages to come to an uneasy alliance with the two strange men (the older named Vincent, the younger Simon) - one of which, Simon, we learn cannot speak due to an injury. Just at this moment, Maggie begins to experience pain and fearing her and her baby's life Allison insists on going to the medicine storage room to gather things to help the teenager. Daniel formulates a plan to retrieve his shotgun and ammunition from his squad car with Vincent and Simon and tells Allison to wait until he returns before going deeper into the hospital.Daniel and the two others head outside to find that the car has been rolled further away from the entrance but there are no mysterious figures to be seen anywhere. They run to the car and while Vincent keeps a look-out Simon opens the trunk and retrieves ammo and flares while Daniel struggles to unlock the holster for his shotgun. When Vincent notices a figure in the distance, Daniel switches on a his lights to reveal the tree-line where many of these figures stand silently, brandishing knives. When one suddenly appears behind Simon and prepares to attack him, Daniel releases the shotgun and kills the assailant before all three of them sprint back to the hospital.When they return, they find that Allison has chosen not to wait and has ventured out to the medicine storage room against Daniel's wishes for her to not go alone. As Allison gathers up what she needs someone appearing to be Dr. Powell stands behind her. Back at the entrance, Daniel notices that Dr. Powell's body is missing as he and the two men make their way to the storage room to find Allison. While looking for her, and finding nothing but the bag within which she was collecting what she needed, the three come across Dr. Powell's office and investigate. As Vincent looks through a tin box filled with Polaroids of naked women, the mysterious figures, and dead bodies Dr. Powell speaks to Daniel on the phone - taunting him before hanging up.Wanting answers, Daniel allows Vincent and Simon to interrogate the junkie - threatening to break his fingers with a hammer if he doesn't tell them what's going on.The junkie claims to not know anything about what appears to be a cult but reveals that he was lured to the house with the promise of crystal meth and joined other drug addicts there. Things quickly took a turn for the worst as the cultists (including Dr. Powell) watched the junkies have sex before sacrificing them in strange rituals and performing experiments on both alive and dead victims. The junkie is only alive because Vincent and Simon showed up that night, guns blazing, and killing everything - cultist or not - in the process. It's then revealed that Vincent and Simon, who are father and son, went to the house to get revenge on those responsible for killing their family.Desperate to find Allison, Daniel convinces Vincent and Simon to come with him into the burned out section of the hospital, believing that that's where Dr. Powell has taken her. He leaves Kim with Ben and Maggie despite her protests and gives Ben a gun to help protect them. The three men then bring the reluctant junkie along whom they don't entirely believe to be innocent in all this.As they travel deeper into the destroyed section of the hospital Kim, who's been helping them navigate over the radio, loses track of where they are and eventually comes to the realization that they've managed to enter a part of the building that shouldn't technically exist. As Kim loses radio contact with Daniel, the four men enter a maze-like area with a giant triangle and other symbols etched into the floor.Meanwhile someplace else, Allison awakens on an operating table as Dr. Powell stands over a sink washing bloodied surgical tools and picking away at pieces of his own flesh. Powell explains that after the death of his daughter he went searching for answers on how to transcend death and transform himself into something greater, but also to discover a way in which he could bring his daughter back. After encountering something that showed him how he began a cult to help him achieve this and has been conducting experiments on the living and the dead for years - referencing the hospital's fire as being started by of some of his unsuccessful creations which he's kept around despite their desire to die. Powell, who has begun flaying the skin off of himself, then removes the sheet covering Allison whose stomach has become engorged with something moving around violently inside her.Daniel, Vincent, and Simon continue their search and come upon a room filled with mutilated corpses who've been experimented on in various states of decay. When Vincent begins to have visions of his dead wife the corpses come to life and begin attacking them. After briefly fighting them off, Vincent sees his wife holding their baby run through a doorway and chases after them with Simon close behind. Daniel and the junkie flee in a different direction but a creature grabs the junkie and bashes his head repeatedly into the floor - killing him and allowing Daniel to escape.Back up in the hospital Maggie begins to experience severe pain again and Kim comes to the realization that she needs to perform a C-Section on her lest they both die. Kim tries to make the first incision but panics and tells Ben she can't do it. As Ben pleads for Kim to do the surgery, Maggie slits his throat - revealing that not only is she a part of the cult but she's carrying Dr. Powell's new child. As cultists begin to invade the hospital, Kim hides herself in a cabinet.Simon follows his father through the tunnels which inexplicably begin to turn into their home. He finds his father grieving over his dead wife and infant child and then turns to attack Simon, asking over and over why he didn't protect them. The illusion disappears and Vincent recollects himself.Daniel eventually comes across the room where Allison is being kept and finds her alone still laying on the operating table - pregnant. He caresses her stomach and kisses her as she tells him to stay with her. Suddenly this illusion disappears and Daniel finds himself standing over an Allison whose stomach has exploded outward with tentacles. An unseen Dr. Powell tells him that he was able to give her what she always wanted: to be a mother. Daniel then takes his axe and continuously chops away at Allison's remains.Making his way into a large room with an illuminated triangle on the wall, Daniel is lectured by Dr. Powell about his experiments and his knowledge of life and death. He offers Daniel to be allowed to join his cult and tells him he can bring his child back too if he's willing to die first. When he refuses, Maggie appears and shoves a knife into his back. As Daniel collapses a skinless, inhuman Dr. Powell reveals and explains that he found a way to bring his own daughter back. Powell asks Maggie if she's ready and then kneels in front of the triangle. Reciting an incantation the triangle opens - revealing a blindly bright void of light.As Maggie convulses and screams in horror a large, twisted creature which Powell calls his daughter emerges from her torso. Vincent and Simon appear and the creature chases after them. Eventually, Vincent is caught and as it begins to force its tentacles into his body he covers himself and the monster in flammable liquid and calls for Simon to set them ablaze with a flare. After some hesitation, Simon does and flees.Still alive, Daniel crawls to Powell who grabs him by the throat as he tries to resist. Powell attempts to once again convince Daniel to join him and promises he can be with Allison again. Daniel then grabs hold of Powell's arm and forces them both through the void of light and they disappear.As the place begins to rumble and collapse, Simon continues to flee the now-charred creature. As a hallway he's running through begins to close in around them, Simon barely escapes as the monster gets crushed and he somehow finds himself back at the hospital's entrance. Finding Kim still in the cabinet, the two exit the hospital as dawn begins.The film ends in the desolate and dark landscape that Daniel had towards the start of the film. He stands there, holding hands with Allison, as the two gaze upwards at a massive floating black pyramid...

            The unburied dead are returning to life and attacking the living to kill and eat them. The first part of the film follows the actions of former Colonel and current Sergeant "Nicotine" Crockett (Alan van Sprang). In the opening scene, Colonel Crockett, after a failed raid of sorts that ends in the deaths and reanimation of several fellow National Guardsmen and his getting demoted to Sergeant, deserts his post with fellow soldiers Kenny (Eric Woolfe), Francisco (Stefano Colacitti) and Tomboy (Athena Karkanis). The four fugitive soldiers go on where they rob the protagonists of the previous film (see 'Diary of the Dead').Meanwhile, off the coast of Delaware lies Plum Island, home to two Irish-American feuding families - the O'Flynns and the Muldoons. The former family, lead by Patrick O'Flynn (Kenneth Welsh), rounds up a posse and kills the undead of the island, learning that the Muldoons, led by Seamus Muldoon (Richard Fitzpatrick) are keeping their undead loved ones "alive" until a cure is found. A brief standoff ends with the Muldoons exiling Patrick and several other O'Flynns, under the suggestion of Patrick's daughter Janet (Kathleen Munroe).Three weeks later. The four National Guard deserters find themselves joined by a young teenager known only as Boy (Devon Bostick) after an encounter with some fellow zombie-killers whom the four rouge soldiers are forced to kill when the hunters attempt to kill them as well. Crockett and his group steal an abandoned armored truck nearby and decide to drive north to Canada. Through Boy and an Internet connection they learn of Plum Island - a video that was recorded by Patrick O'Flynn. They head to a nearby dock off the deserted interstate highway as instructed, and a gunfight starts between the O'Flynns bunkered down in a fishing shop and Crockett's group. Francisco jumps off the pier and swims out to a large ferry steamer, successfully commandeers the unmanned ship for the group. During the battle, several zombies showing up to distract both sides of the gunfight. Francisco is attacked by an underwater zombie which he successfully battles, biting the finger off of an attacking zombie along the way.The O'Flynns, except Patrick, are killed and eaten by zombies and the four Army deserters board the ferry. Patrick too jumps aboard, kept there by a shaky truce of sorts as the rest of the group takes care of the zombies on board the ferry. Francisco starts to feel sick, having earlier ingested the blood of a zombie when he bit off the finger of the underwater zombie that attacked him. On the trip over, Patrick reveals he delibrately sent other strangers over to Plum Island to anger Muldoon and trigger the latter's distrust for strangers. Eventually, the group stops the ferry a short distance away and makes it to the island on a small dingy.There, they discover that the Muldoons have chained up the zombies in imitation of their previous lives - a mailman puts mail in a mailbox, a logger wields an axe on some wood, and so on. It is revealed that Patrick's daughter, Janet, is now a zombie, riding around on her horse as she did when she was alive. Not only that, but the living strangers sent over by Patrick have been killed by the Muldoons in order to 'feed' them to the zombies while the strangers who arrived as zombies were allowed to remain animated. Patrick is disgusted with this and, as he attempts to go into town and gather some allies that did not leave the island from his family, two scouting Muldoons attack the deserters, shooting Crockett and Kenny. The latter dies from his wounds, and is shot in the head by Patrick to prevent reanimation. Patrick heads off.Taking shelter in an abandoned meeting house, Boy works to stitch up Crockett's gunshot wound on his left shoulder, Francisco's sickness gets worse and he wanders off where Tomboy finds him and he asks her to shoot him before he turns into a zombie. She complies, and is then captured by Muldoon men and taken to his headquarters across a small bridge leading to the other part of the island. It is now revealed that Janet is, in fact, a twin: Jane, her favored sister, is the zombie on the horse from earlier. Janet helps Crockett out, and she, Crockett and Boy join the O'Flynn group for their attack on the Muldoons. Crockett agrees to come along to exact revenge for Kenny.A standoff occurs at the bridge of the river that separates the two families' land, and the O'Flynn group with Crockett are captured, while Boy and Janet are pushed off into the forest. Tomboy is released from Muldoon's capture (During her capture she also learned that Muldoon's own wife is now a zombie that he keeps chained up in his kitchen) and rejoins the captive group. Muldoon and O'Flynn face off. Muldoon's one wish is to prove O'Flynn wrong about the zombies, hoping to get the creatures to eat something other than human flesh. Muldoon's latest example is Patrick's daughter Jane, attempting to get her to devour a horse. A farmhand, Chuck (Joris Jarsky), brings out a herd of captured zombies to watch the zombie Jane's attempt to eat the horse.She doesn't, and Janet returns with Boy, giving Crockett and the O'Flynns their weapons back. Janet attempts to reach out to Jane, who bites her twin sister on her hand. A climatic gunfight erupts between the two families. Chuck switches sides and gets shot by Muldoon for his trouble. Dying, he releases the zombie herd and is devoured. The gunfight's focus changes to the zombie threat, and they eat and kill most of the ones involved in the shootout.Muldoon and O'Flynn, each with one bullet left in their guns, create a shaky truce that is immediately broken by Muldoon shooting O'Flynn in the back. A dying O'Flynn unleashes a secret gun stored up his wrist and kills Muldoon. Crockett and his group, fed up with all of the death, attempt to leave the island on the ferry boat they came in on. Janet witnesses her sister actually take a bite out of the horse, and rushes to tell Crockett's group the news, but she gets shot in the head by her father with his remaining bullet after mistaking her for her undead sister. He succumbs to his wounds soon after.The three survivors, Crockett, Boy and Tomboy, though tempted to stick around on Plum Island, refuse to become like the Muldoon/O'Flynn families, and leave the island on the ferry they came in on. Also of note: the armored truck they rode into the dock earlier in the film contains a million dollars in cash as they plan to use somehow in the future (possibly creating a new city for survivors in Pennsylvania from 'The Land of the Dead').Meanwhile, on Plum Island, zombies are seen eating the horse Jane started to eat as all of the remaining human population is killed and eaten by the zombies. In the final scene, the zombified Patrick and Muldoon come up on a hill together, guns in hand, attempting to kill one another once more as zombies. However, it is unknown to them that their guns are empty.
