
            Happily married and with a young family, DK (Shah) and Indu (Azmi) couldn't wish for a better life. DK has a well-paid position at a top engineering firm. He and Indu move in enviable social circles, and their daughters, Pinky (Matondkar) and Minnie (Aradhana), are bright and adorable. The only mentionable "discord" in their family is that DK and his daughters would love to have a puppy, but Indu is staunchly against it.The scene is set for a more serious discord when DK suddenly receives a call from his old headmaster in Nainital, informing him that he has an illegitimate son. The son, Rahul (Hansraj), is the product of a one-night-stand between DK and an old schoolfriend, Bhavna (Pathak), when DK visited Nainital 9 years ago. Now that Bhavna is dead, Rahul is to be DK's responsibility.DK is shocked but does the only honest thing in the circumstances - he tells Indu about the affair and Rahul. Indu is devastated. While she allows DK to bring Rahul home, her relationship with DK reaches a stalemate. She can't forgive him and he can't fail in his duty towards his son.The girls take to Rahul immediately - not knowing, of course, that he is their half-brother. DK's natural affection for the boy deepens when he sees how affectionate and intelligent Rahul is. The only person who cannot accept Rahul's presence in the family is Indu: for her, Rahul is the living reminder of DK's unfaithfulness.Things reach a crisis when Rahul cuts his hand but Indu shuns him when he runs to her for help, albeit not realizing that he is hurt. DK is infuriated but realizes that he can't let Rahul stay on in the family. He decides to take Rahul on a holiday to Nainital, where he arranges for Rahul to be admitted into a respected boarding school.Before Rahul starts school, DK brings him back home for a short stay - nearly to a reconciliation with Indu, before she draws back, realizing that the root of the problem remains. However, the fragile truce between DK, Indu and Rahul seems to be going well until Rahul inadvertently discovers that DK is his true father. Despite his youth, Rahul knows enough to realize that he can never fit into his father's family from marriage. He runs away that evening.Rahul's disappearance jolts Indu enough to drop her studied indifference to the child. She joins DK in searching for Rahul. Nearly out of his mind with worry, DK calls the Police, where he admits publicly for the first time that Rahul is his son.Later in the evening, Rahul is brought back home by a police officer. At that time, Indu is the only one at home (with DK still at the police station). Half-relieved, half-angry, she confronts Rahul with the worry he has caused the family. Rahul discloses that he knows that DK is his father, and goes and hides in his room. Later, DK returns and tries to win back Rahul's confidence, but Rahul won't speak to him any more. Defeated, DK tells Indu that he must take Rahul to the boarding school the next morning. He can't see any other option.That night, for the first time, Indu goes to Rahul's bedroom to tuck him in. She thinks he is asleep, but he opens his eyes and tells her he is sorry. All of a sudden, Rahul's innocence dawns on Indu, and she flees the room in tears. She understands that she isn't the only victim of the events.Next morning, DK takes Rahul to the station as planned, to board him on the train to Nainital. Rahul is still not speaking with him. But just before boarding the train, the parting from his father becomes too much for Rahul to bear, and he falls in DK's arms, sobbing. DK doesn't know how to remedy the pain, and can only promise that he won't forget Rahul and will visit him often.A confusion about Rahul's water bottle leads to DK rushing back to the car just before the train is about to leave. By the time he returns to the platform, the train has left. A dejected DK heads back to the car park, thinking how miserably he has failed his son in every way, but a delightful surprise awaits him: he sees that Rahul is back inside the car, along with Indu, Pinky and Minnie. At the last moment, Indu has decided to forgive DK. She now welcomes Rahul into the family as the only way forward. DK and Indu exchange a happy, meaningful look as DK gets into the car and starts driving the family back home.The last shot shows a photograph of the now once-again-happy family, with Indu and DK holding their children - and Rahul sitting on Indu's lap.

            Narayan Shankar (Amitabh Bachchan) is a strict Headmaster of Gurukul Boys, a prestigious all-boys university. Narayan wants the best out of his students by placing astronomical emphasis on traditions and discipline only with no room for anything else such as camaredrie, liberties, drama etc. For example; as Principal Head of Gurukul for over twenty five years, he had forbidden his students from any kind of romance - anyone he catches romancing or in love is expelled with no "ifs" , "ands" or "buts"....This film focuses particularly on three of the school's students: Sameer (Jugal Hansraj), Vicky (Uday Chopra) and Karan (Jimmy Sheirgill) who all fall in love.1.Sameer is head over heels in love with Sanjana (Kim Sharma), his childhood friend who already has a steady boyfriend.2.Vicky falls for Ishika (Shamita Shetty), a student at the all-girls university near to Gurukul Boys who is irritated by Vicky every time he comes near her to woo her.3.Karan has a crush /becomes smitten with Kiran (Preeti Jhangiani), a girl he sees one night alone at a train station who is a widow (already married to a famous pilot who is presumed to be dead).All three know that if they're caught they'd be expelled, so they do not pursue their love interests but do remininsce about it in ther free time.Next, comes Mr. Raj Aryan (Shah Rukh Khan) who is welcomed in Gurukul Boys Music College as a Music teacher. Friendly, amicable, and a strong believer in the power of LOVE (especially romantic love) he manages to challenge the status quo. Gradually, he introduces changes that the Principal Narayan dislikes when confronted with them.For example, when the three boys open up to him about their love interests, he encourages them to "follow the heart" and not be disheartened so very easily. He inspires them by telling them that he also has his special love, Megha (Aishwarya Rai) who is dead, but he continues to love her and imagines that she is still by his side now. Raj encourages the boys to continue to stay loyal to their loves.One day Raj throws a party inside the Gurukul campus, inviting the students from the nearby girls' school as part of his plan to spread the message of love in Gurukul.Narayan is furious and threatens to fire him. At this point, Raj reveals to Narayan that he was a student at Gurukul Boys about 10- 15 years ago and he had fallen in love with Megha, Narayan's one and only daughter. Narayan had expelled Raj without ever seeing his face, and immediately Megha had committed suicide. Raj explains to the Principal Narayan his reason to return to Gurukul Boys as a Music teacher - "the hope of changing Gurukul Boys College philosophy and creed on "Zero-tolerance for LOVE" thus, honoring his love for Megha.Raj challenges, dares and also promises a shocked Narayan that before he leaves Gurukul Boys College, he will fill it with so much love that even Narayan will not be able to remove it. Narayan accepts this challenge, and allows Raj to continue as a teacher for a while longer.Subsequently, with Raj's guidance and support the boys -Sameer, Vicky, and Karan -one by one, slowly slowly are able to win over their love interests...Narayan retaliates by tightening the rules of Gurukul Boys College. The students body continue to defy and challenge the rules, form new ones and encourage new ideas which is very encouraging and spreads an atmosphere of happiness.As a last resort to preserve the ethos and creed which he had built for twenty five years for Gurukul College- Narayan decides to expel the three students Sameer, Vicky and Karan.The Music teacher Raj speaks up and pleads on their behalf, explaining to the Principal Narayan how he had instigated the death of his own daughter, and the boys should not be punished as they did not do anything "wrong".Raj also states that he feels Narayan lost the challenge, because his daughter left him and now Raj (who considered Narayan an elder) is leaving him. Raj's stinging words make Narayan realise that changes are needed. He publicly apologises to the students and steps down as the Principal, allowing Raj to take over as the new Headmaster!In a few years time, Gurukul Boys College changes into a university that had an atmosphere honor and discipline mixed with flexibility,love and happiness which was evident on each student's rapport and demeanor.In the last scene- Raj, Narayan and a vague vision of the late Megha walk hand in hand happily together towards the wide open and strong gates of Gurukul Boys College.

            Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) is a middle-class working mother who lives in Chandan Nagar, West Bengal with her teenage daughter Minnie (Tunisha Sharma), who is paralyzed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair. Minnie is a happy child and Vidya dotes on her, working hard to save money so that she can take Minnie to America in the hope that the girl will walk again.One day, Vidya returns home in the evening to find her daughter is missing. Vidya then receives a call from an unknown man asking her to come to an address if she does not want to see Mini dead. When she crosses the road, a taxi knocks her down, sending her into a coma. The taxi driver takes her to a nursing home run by Dr. Maity (Pradip Mukherjee). Police Sub-Inspector Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal) is put on Vidya's case. He visits Vidya's home and finds her diary, which he takes as evidence. Inderjeet's senior, Pranab Halder (Kharaj Mukherjee), informs him that a woman named Durga Rani Singh is wanted for a kidnapping and murder case.As Inderjeet reads Vidya's diary, her past is revealed. She worked as a clerk in a school in Kalimpong as Durga Rani Singh. She is friendly with Arun (Tota Roychoudhury) and it is obvious that Arun has feelings for her. At school, she noticed that a student named Minnie Dewan (Naisha Khanna) was always punished for sleeping during classes. When after repeated attempts at befriending reclusive Minnie fail, Durga decides to visit Minnie's grandmother (Amba Sanyal), pretending to be a teacher. Durga's worst fears come true when Minnie confides that her uncle Mohit Dewan (Jugal Hansraj) was sexually abusing her. It is now clear from Durga's diary that she was also a survivor of child sex abuse and she informs Minnie's grandmother but she admonishes her. Durga tries to file a case with the police. But after an investigation made by a Police Officer (Koushik Sen), he finds Mohit Dewan (Jugal Hansraj) innocent and doesn't believe Durga. Minnie jumps off the terrace in desperation and becomes paralyzed from the waist down. A policewoman (Gargi Bharadwaj), taking the side of Minnie's grandmother, threatens Durga not to pursue the matter. Durga decides to save Minnie from her family and has a fight with her grandmother, who gets killed accidentally in the incident. Durga flees with Minnie, settling in Chandan Nagar, with a new name, Vidya Sinha. But Mohit hunts them down and gets Minnie kidnapped with the help of the police woman.In the present, the kidnapper policewoman comes to the nursing home and threatens Vidya to pay ransom to save Minnie, who has been kidnapped by Mohit and her. Terrified, Vidya escapes from the hospital after recovering from the coma and returns home in search of the address that the kidnapper asked her to come to. She is caught by Halder and Inderjeet at her home. However, she is successful in escaping from there, as she shoots Inderjeet in his arm. Vidya then arrives at Kolkata, where she goes to the docks as ordered by Mohit. Vidya offers to pay the ransom to the kidnapper policewoman. Mohit shoots the policewoman when she takes interest in the ransom money. He then tries to strangulate Vidya, but is shot dead by Minnie, who picked up his fallen revolver. Vidya then calls Inderjeet to seek his help, but Haldar and other police officer ask Inderjeet to call her to a place where they can arrest her. Inderjeet asks Vidya to come to his paternal house, where they are surrounded by the police force. Halder tries to come near to Vidya, but she shoots him in the leg. Later, she sets the house on fire.It is finally revealed that Vidya's real name is Durga Rani Singh and she was married to Inderjeet Singh at a very young age, but got separated later. Durga after recovering from the coma asked Inderjeet for his help and they planned her escape. It was Inderjeet, who helped Durga in arranging the real passports for Vidya and her adopted daughter. He helped her in escaping to Kolkata in the police Ambassador car, inside the car trunk, and he helped her escape from the burning house.It is seen that Durga is alive, (who is believed to be dead by the police) and is traveling to New York City for Minnie's operation. Inderjeet is seen happily driving with his family.
