John Murphy is a Vancouver based actor, director, playwright and musician. He's worked extensively for Bard on the Beach, Vancouver's renowned Shakespeare Festival, playing such roles as Benedick, Petruchio, Bollingbrook, Jaques, and Kent. For the Arts Club Theatre he has appeared in August:Osage County, Cyrano, The Optimists, A Flea in Her Ear, Sheer Madness, and A Twisted Christmas Carol. He has also worked with Ruby Slippers Theatre, Touchstone Theatre, Neworld, Axis and Rumble Theatre.He has adapted and directed Measure for Measure and Much Ado About Nothing for Bard on the Beach, and Volpone for United Players. He wrote original scores for Measure for Measure and Volpone. Other directing work includes - The Odd Couple, Santaland Diaries, Baskerville and A Twisted Christmas Carol (Arts Club); Woody Sed (Theatre Bagger); Duet for One (United Players); Ghosts in Baghdad (Working Spark).He has written three plays - The Heretic, True Story and Tartuffe. The Heretic is a one man show that John performed in as well. It toured the Canadian Fringe circuit and went on to the Edinburgh Fringe. It is published by Talonbooks. True Story won the Jessie Award for Best New Play. Tartuffe is an adaptation of Moliere's classic set in Vancouver, 2018.John writes, records and performs music with the band China Repair.
