
            Silent Running takes place in the not-so-distant future, at a time in which Earth's plant life has been decimated. Only a few specimens of flora have been preserved, and are currently in space in a fleet of orbiting greenhouses.Freeman Lowell (played by Bruce Dern) is the main character, one of four extraterrestrial forest rangers aboard the Valley Forge, one of the 2,000 metre-long green house freighters. He is passionately dedicated to preserving the orbiting forests and their natural inhabitants, and eventual returning them to Earth for reforestation of his now-barren planet more so than his crewmates, whose main priority seems to be returning to Earth after their one-year deployment to space.The main conflict comes when Lowell and his crew are ordered to destroy the orbiting greenhouses and redeploy the freighters to commercial service. Lowell decides to disobey orders and save the forests he has worked so hard to preserve.Lowell's crewmates manage to jettison and detonate four of the six greenhouse domes on the Valley Forge. Lowell kills one of his crewmates in a struggle to save the two remaining domes, during which he seriously injures his leg. He then manages to trap the other two crewmen in the other remaining dome, which he then jettisons and destroys.With help from the ship's three robots, Lowell feigns a premature dome detonation to fool his superiors, then alters the orbit of the Valley Forge , redirecting it towards Saturn in an attempt to preserve the last forest dome. Injured and alone with three robots, Lowell programs them to perform surgery on his leg.Still in communication with the rest of the fleet, Lowell is informed that the Valley Forge is on a collision course with Saturn's rings, and there is nothing he can do to stop the catastrophic event. The ship will likely be destroyed. With communications failing due to the distance now between the Valley Forge and the rest of the fleet, the ship passes through the rings of Saturn. While the three robots are outside the ship on maintenance duty, one is blown away from the ship, leaving two remaining robots. The ship, and its single greenhouse dome, emerge undamaged on the other side of the rings.Lowell and the two remaining robots chart a course into deep space, far away from the fleet. Alone except for his accompanying drones, Lowell befriends them and renames them Huey, Dewey and (posthumously) Louie. He teaches them to play poker, plant trees, and bury the killed crewmember.Lowell soon realizes that despite all his efforts, his forest is dying from unknown causes. In a desperate and rushed attempt to save the dome he badly damages Huey in an accident with one of the ship's buggies. Repairs are unsuccessful, the forest continues dying, and Lowell begins to come to realize that his mission to save the forest is bound to fail.After weeks alone in space, faint radio chatter is heard from a rescue party mounted from the Valley Forge's sister ship, the Berkshire, which has located the freighter after a long search. Finally able to communicate with Lowell, they inform him that they will be able to reach him within six hours he must jettison the dome but not detonate the nuclear charge, as it is too dark to do so safely.At this point it dawns upon Lowell that what was killing the forest was lack of sunlight. With little time to work, he activates a series of lights to simulate the sun and instructs his last active robot, Dewey, to "just maintain the forest."Realizing that his crime will be uncovered when the Berkshire finds him, Lowell jettisons the last dome to safety with the words "take good care of the forest, Dewey."With the Berkshire only two hours away from docking, Lowell and the damaged Huey sit facing each other while he arms the last of the six nuclear charges. As he prepares to destroy himself and preserve the last dome, Lowell says to Huey: "When I was a kid, I put a note into a bottle, and it had my name and address on it. And then I threw the bottle into the ocean. And I never knew if anyone ever found it."With that, Lowell destroys the Valley Forge with the last of the onboard nuclear charges.The final scene is of a well-lit forest greenhouse drifting into space, tended by the sole remaining robot with a battered watering can. The scene is accompanied by Joan Baez's rendition of the film's theme song.

            Inside a traveling spacecraft, a robot pilot at the controls called SAM-104 (Don Olivera) approaches Mike Colby (Jesse Vint), who is encased, unconscious, in a glass chamber in a form of hibernation stasis. As the man awakens, the robot informs him that the ship is under attack. Mike and SAM-104 escape by firing missiles at the encroaching raiders. The robot tells him that the Federation has extended Mike's mission, diverting them to the planet Xarbia to repair a security lab. They jump into hyperspace and arrive at the station on the surface of Xarbia, a desert-like planet with two orbiting suns.Inside, Mike meets Dr. Gordon Hauser (Linden Chiles) and Dr. Barbara Glaser (June Chadwick), then turns off SAM-104's controls. The doctors explain that they conduct bacteriological genetic engineering experiments and have successfully created a new food source. When Mike bumps into crew member Tracy Baxter (Dawn Dunlap), Gordon asks her to find their colleague, Jimmy Swift (Michael Bowen), and bring him to the laboratory. In the lab, Mike meets Dr. Cal Tinburgen (Fox Harris), head of bacteriology, and observes the piles of bloody rabbit carcasses strewn across the floor. They tell him that an octopus-like "metamorphic mutant" called Subject 20, which continuously alters its genetic makeup to change forms, caused the damage. The so-called Subject 20 is seen in one of the glass cages covered in a type of cocoon. Mike proposes they kill the creature, but Barbara convinces him to wait.As Tracy joins Mike, the doctors, and crew members Earl Richards (Scott Paulin) and Brian Beale (Raymond Oliver) for dinner, Jimmy cleans the lab and notices that the creature's breathing in the cocoon increases. Gordon calls Jimmy on the intercom to inform him that the behavior is normal, but sends Tracy back to investigate. A slimy, black blob emerges from Subject 20 and attacks Jimmy. Meanwhile, the doctors explain that their experiments involve a substance called Proto-B, the genes of which they spliced with a fast-growing alga. When Mike asks what was spliced with Proto-B to create Subject 20, Barbara mentions a deceased crew member named Annie, but no one elaborates further. They receive a distress signal from Tracy, who discovered Jimmy's body in the lab with his brain missing, but his heart still beating. While Cal brings the corpse into the medical bay, Barbara gives her condolences to Tracy.That night, Earl watches security camera footage of Barbara and Mike making love before noticing an alarm warning. He descends to a darkened corridor, where the monster attacks him. Meanwhile, Cal injects medicine into his torso as he sits and watches Jimmy's skin and muscle rapidly turn to gelatin.The next morning, Mike walks in on Tracy sitting naked, taking a steam bath. As he undresses, the monster attacks, but they escape. The creature breaks through the sauna skylight, and Mike announces that he, Gordon, Brian, and SAM-104 will follow it outside. The men put on protective spacesuits, and Gordon explains that they only have an hour before the atmosphere will cause the nitrogen in their blood to froth. In the lab, Barbara and Cal watch as the gelatinous pile divides in two.On the desert surface of Xarbia, Brian finds Earl's decomposing body near the mutant's latest cocoon. The men shoot at the sac with a laser gun, but discover it is empty. Near the station, they see the monster, which has morphed into a large, black, tentacled creature with a gaping mouth. The mutant swallows Gordon whole and dives down one of the station's vents into the control room, destroying all the computers. Cal realizes that the creature is creating permanent food supply by injecting the humans' bodies with Proto-B, causing them to infinitely split and reproduce. Gordon, deformed and nearly dead, stumbles into the room and falls to the ground. Cal explains that Gordon spliced his own cells with Proto-B, which were then used to fertilize an egg that was implanted into Annie's uterus. Subject 20 grew so quickly, however, that it killed her two weeks later.Meanwhile in the showers, Barbara tells Tracy that they need to communicate with the creature instead of attacking it. As the men brainstorm ways to kill the mutant, the two women enter the control room. Realizing that the creature can understand her and has wired itself into the computer system, Barbara uses the keyboard to ask it if it can co-exist with humans. In response, Subject 20 stabs her with its tentacle. Tracy runs to tell the men that Barbara was killed, and Mike and Brian follow her back to the control room. SAM-104 reveals that it knows Cal has cancer; Cal injects his cancerous cells into a sample of Gordon's mutating tissue. He then uses lasers to blast the remainder of the monster's food supply before joining Brian and Mike in the control room. The creature's cocoon emits a liquid onto the control boards, which electrocutes Brian. Cal attempts to kill the creature, but a tentacle smashes into his head.Accompanied by SAM-104, Mike carries the injured doctor into another lab room, where Cal instructs him to cut out his liver tumor and feed it to the mutant. Tracy runs to Cal's room to get his morphine supply. On her way back, the monster chases her through the halls. Unable to wait for the morphine, Mike performed the crude surgery to remove the cancer. Just then, Tracy returns to the lab after being chased by the monster and gives the morphine to Cal. Just as Mike removes the large tumor on Cal's liver, Cal dies. Just then, the monster, Subject 20, breaks into the lab and attacks. Mike attempts to feed the monster the tumor without getting eaten himself, while SAM-104 shoots at the monster with its ray gun without success. SAM-104 then takes a scalpel blade off a table and stabs the monster in its right eye, but the monster uses one of its tentacles to hit SAM-104 with such force that the robot is flung against a wall and breaks into several pieces. Just then, Mike manages to get the creature to eat the malignant tumor. The monster quickly reacts by vomiting violently and collapses to the floor. As the monster finally dies in a slow and clearly agonizing death, Mike and Tracy stand among the carnage, remembering their fellow crew members that died in the struggle.
    

Forbidden World


            -This synopsis is regarding the original cut of the film ('The 13th Pig), not any of the various re-edits**The film opens as we see a man feeding a corpse to a pen full of squealing pigs. This man is Zambrini (Marc Lawrence). He talks to the corpse as he prepares to toss it into the pen, explaining that the pigs were roaming free one night and they happened upon a drunk sleeping in a field. After eating the sleeping drunk, the pigs gained a taste for human flesh.A Volkswagen bug driven by a young woman down a series of increasingly isolated roads. This is Lynn (Toni Lawrence), and the song that plays over the opening credits advises her to "keep on driving till the end of the road", because "somebody's waiting for you". After driving past a series of oil wells in rural California, she stops at a dead-end road, where she finds a diner. There is a sign in the window that says "Waitress wanted". As she steps out of her car, she is startled by the screaming of pigs, but she continues inside, where she meets Zambrini. This is his diner, and without much dialogue passing between them, he hires Lynn as a waitress and helps her get settled into a spare room where she will stay. She finds a strait razor in the medicine cabinet while she is preparing for bed. She has a nightmare that Zambrini enters her room and slashes her to death, but she wakes and realizes it was just a dream. She goes outside and starts looking around the property and hears the pigs, but before she can approach the pen, Zambrini grabs her and warns her never to go looking around back there.A pair of older sisters are Zambrini's closest neighbors, Miss Macy (Catherine Ross) and Annette (Iris Korn). They are in the habit of calling the local sheriff, Dan Cole (Jesse Vint), and complaining about Zambrini's pigs. They can hear the pigs squealing from where they live, but they also claim that the pigs run free at night and come right up to their house. They claim Zambrini victimizes people by feeding them to his pigs, after which another pig will appear in the pen.While Lynn is serving customers at the diner, a customer named Ben (Paul Hickey) begins hitting on her, although she rebuffs his advances. He tells her Zambrini's back story, about how he fell from a high wire during a performance and was pronounced dead, only to be taken to the morgue, where they discovered he was not dead at all. Dan Cole arrives and talks to Zambrini about the complaint he got from the Macy sisters, warning him to make sure his pigs are penned. He also meets Lynn, frightening her for a moment by telling her she is driving a "missing car". It turns out he's only referring to her registration, which is outdated. She promises to update it. Afterwards, Lynn makes a seemingly desperate phone call to her father, telling him that she had to leave but that she will return to be with him as soon as she can. We only hear Lynn's side of this conversation.Later, Zambrini pays an uninvited visit to the Macys, entering their home unannounced and terrifying them by wearing bizarre makeup that he used during his days as a circus performer.Ben returns to the diner and asks Lynn out again, this time telling her that he discovered an out of place nurse's uniform discarded in a field nearby, seemingly implicating Lynn, the stranger who has just arrived in town. Although Lynn tries to deny any connection, she agrees to go on a date with Ben. Unfortunately, Ben drives her to an isolated location and tries to force himself on her, seemingly willing to rape her if she doesn't comply. She is rescued by Sheriff Cole, who arrives and gives her a ride back to the diner.Lynn mysteriously invites Ben back to her room at Zambrini's, apologizing for not accepting his advances. She puts on a show for him by wearing sexy lingerie, and then she gets into bed with him. However, she produces the strait razor and violently slashes Ben to death. Zambrini discovers the scene, with Lynn staring off into nowhere and singing to herself next to Ben's dead body. Calming Lynn, he cleans her up and takes her to his own room, where he puts her to bed. Afterwards, he removes Ben's body and feeds it to the pigs behind the diner.Lynn wakes up the next day with seemingly no memory of the incident, but she walks down the road to a payphone, where she places another one-sided phone call to her father. When she can't reach him, she runs back to the diner, "chased" by her half-remembered screams of Ben and the threatening squeals of pigs.Ben is missed, and Sheriff Cole begins investigating his whereabouts, leading him to the farm. He talks to the Macy sisters, who claim to have seen him arrive at Zambrini's, never to have left, while the pigs "went crazy". Dan questions Zambrini again and tries to look at the pig pen, attracted to it by the howling of Ben's dog, which has apparently located Ben's body by sense of smell. A human hand is lying just outside the pen, but Zambrini manages to hide it by standing on it, and Cole leaves. Dan returns to the Macys, where a doctor (Walter Barnes) is doing a checkup on one of the sisters. Dan and the doctor have a conversation about Miss Macy's belief that Zambrini turns people into pigs by feeding them to the swine, and the doctor tells him that ancient Egyptians actually believed this was possible, and that a human turning into a pig was a step toward becoming divine. Lynn herself proves impossible for Dan to question, staring off into space again and playing with her hair.Cole isn't the only one looking for Ben, either. Zambrini discovers a group of young men prowling around his property, presumably Ben's coworkers at one of the oil wells. They find nothing, but beat Zambrini and tell him to leave town.Things start to unravel for Lynn when a man named Jess Winter (Jim Antonio) arrives in town and starts asking for Lynn. He is eventually referred to the diner, where he approaches her in a non-threatening way and tells her they have some "mutual friends" who care about her. Our suspicions about Lynn are confirmed when he implies that Lynn has run away from a mental facility. He tells Lynn that she's welcome to come back, and Lynn is happy at first, asking about a doctor that she seemed attached to in a fatherly way. Zambrini overhears, and when Lynn goes to pack her things in order to return with him, Winter talks to Zambrini and tells him Lynn ran away from an insane asylum. When Zambrini asks about Lynn's father, he tell him Lynn has no father.Having become attached to Lynn, Zambrini doesn't want her to leave, and he asks her to stay. Lynn agrees, luring Winter into turning his back on her and then stabbing him to death with a large kitchen knife. The body is dragged to the pig pen, where the pigs consume it.Lynn's world continues to close in on her when the mental hospital calls the sheriff, telling him that Winter is missing and that Lynn is an escaped mental patient with homicidal tendencies. Dan calls Zambrini at the diner and tries to warn him about Lynn, telling him to act as if nothing is wrong and wait for them to come and take Lynn into custody. Zambrini, however, immediately tells Lynn the police are coming for her and that they need to make it seem as if she's left. When Lynn mentions her father, Zambrini repeats what the doctor told him: her father is dead. Lynn reacts violently and stabs Zambrini in the back, killing him.Knowing the police are coming for her, she makes one final phone call to her "father", and this time we hear the recorded message on the other end telling her that she's reached a disconnected number. Lynn thinks she's talking to her father, telling him she loves him. While she's talking, the flesh-eating pigs from the pen suddenly enter the diner and advance on her.Cole arrives at the diner and, presumably, finds the aftermath of the pigs eating the bodies of both Lynn and Zambrini. He later tells Ben's co-worker that Lynn murdered her own father after enduring years of sexual abuse from him. The pigs are loaded into the back of a truck and taken away, but Dan is startled to find that instead of the 12 pigs he'd counted on previous visits to the farm, there are now 13 pigs. Also found in the pen is the Egyptian ankh pendant that Lynn has worn throughout the entire film.
