
            After his mother overdoses on heroin, Joshua 'J' Cody is forced to move in with his estranged grandmother, Janine 'Smurf' Cody, the matriarch of a notorious Melbourne crime family. Also living with J's grandmother are her three sons, the Cody Boys. Her eldest son is an armed robber named Andrew 'Pope' Cody, and is in hiding from a group of renegade detectives. The middle brother, Craig, is a successful but volatile drug dealer, and youngest brother Darren follows the lead of his older brothers.J's uncle Craig takes J for a drive and is insulted at a set of traffic lights by a man in a neighbouring car. After handing J a handgun, Craig follows the man and his accomplice to an alley, where the car pulls up and the man gets out, attempting to provoke a fight between himself and Craig. Instead, Craig prompts J to get out of the car and scare off the assailant.Later, Pope's best friend and partner in crime Barry 'Baz' Brown goes to meet Pope at a shopping center claiming that he wishes to quit the robbery game and settle down with his family, suggesting that Pope join him and the pair take up stock investment. As Baz goes to leave, he is encountered by police. After telling the police that Pope has left, the police shoot Baz dead.The tension between the family and the Police explodes, and soon J is asked to steal a car and bring it to the middle of a road. J complies, and two policemen are drawn to the scene, where they are ambushed and killed by Pope and Darren.The next day, Pope, Darren and J are arrested and taken in for questioning where J meets Senior Police Officer Nathan Leckie (who also leads the armed robbery squad), who takes interest in J's situation and seeks to relieve him from it. The three are later released from custody.Later, J is arrested by Officer Leckie for underage drinking and is taken to a hotel for temporary housing. There, Leckie proposes that J be moved to a more permanent witness protection. J turns down the offer.The situation becomes more intense. As well as J himself, J's girlfriend becomes entangled in the war between the Codys and the police, and is eventually killed by Pope as Darren watches. This triggers the arrest of Pope and Darren, who are placed in prison.Meanwhile, Craig has escaped to a friend's house in regional Victoria, where he finds that he is being monitored. Despite an escape attempt, police arrive and kill Craig as he runs away.With Craig and Baz dead and Pope and Darren imprisoned, Smurf decides that "J needs to go", as he is the star witness in the murder case and indeed their armed robbery charges. Smurf uses her connections to procure J's address and organize a raid on that address where J will be shot and killed, but J escapes when he sees armed police heading for the building.J then returns to Smurf's house, saying that he "can't live like this", and that he wishes to help free Pope and Darren from prison. To do this, the family's lawyer sets up J's answers so that a hole can be formed in the case, forcing the release of the pair from prison. Directly following the court session, Leckie visits J, asking him if he had found his place in the world.After Pope and Darren's release, J returns to Smurf's home asking to stay. After Smurf lets him in, J goes to greet Pope and Darren before going to his room. Pope enters and begins to talk to him, but is cut off when J shoots him in the head. In the final shot of the film, J returns to the living room to embrace an uneasy Smurf.

            Dave and Aubrey meet on a Friday night in an alley outside a party and Dave asks Aubrey for advice about a girl that Dave likes, Jane. When the cops arrive, Dave and Aubrey evade the party and walk to her house. When they get to Aubrey's house, she invites him inside. Aubrey randomly asks Dave if he's had sex yet, to which he replies that he hasn't. When he asks her the same question, she refuses to answer. After their conversation, they fall asleep together in her room and when they wake up the next morning, Dave escapes through her bedroom window.Talking to his friends, Simon and Big Corporation, about Aubrey, they think she lied about having a boyfriend and tell him to text her, only for Dave to discover he doesn't have her number. They decide to call a guy who has access to Aubrey's high school student database, who gives Dave Aubrey's home number. When Dave calls Aubrey asking her what her plans are for the night, she says she's going to the movies with her boyfriend Ronny, to which Dave responds that he is also going with his friends.At the cinema, Dave bumps into Jane and her friends and discover they are seeing the same movie. When Aubrey bumps into Dave, she introduces him to Ronny. Aubrey and Ronny then go see the same movie as Dave and Jane. When Aubrey leaves during the film, Dave follows her into the lobby where she apologizes for being rude to him on the phone earlier and making him jump out the window that morning. Dave forgives her by finally getting her cell phone number and invites her and Ronny to a get together at Jane's friend, Brianna's, house. They then go back inside and continue watching the rest of the movie.At Brianna's house Aubrey and Jane have a chat where Jane reveals that Dave is her best guy friend who always listens to her about her relationships. After hearing what Dave says about Jane over the past days, Aubrey begins to suggest Jane go out with Dave but then stops half way through her sentence.Ronny reveals to Dave that after waiting a long time, he is going to have sex with Aubrey in his van that night. Dave then finds Aubrey and asks her not to lose her virginity to Ronny claiming that he isn't the right guy for her. Aubrey then declares that there isn't anyone right for her and that she wants to get it over with. Dave doesn't believe this and claims that she likes him. As they are about to share a kiss, Ronny interrupts wanting to leave immediately. Dave and Ronny get into a small fight and Aubrey leaves with Ronny.Dave is then alone with Jane, and whilst tending to his wound from his fight with Ronny, Jane begins talking about her relationships. Upon realizing his growing feelings for Aubrey, and that whenever Dave and Jane have their chats, all they ever do is talk about her, Dave leaves. On his drive home, Aubrey texts Dave asking him to pick her up. On their drive around town she reveals that she broke up with Ronny, and they share a kiss.The next night, Aubrey's parents go out for the evening, and Aubrey invites Dave over. Dave decides against bringing a condom in case they do have sex. He rebels against it, and goes to her house. When he arrives, they start making out, but Dave stops it claiming that this has been the best weekend of his life and he doesn't want to ruin it. They then state that not having sex is the better option and is much better for their relationship. They then decide to have sex anyway, despite what was just said. However, it doesn't go as smoothly as they planned, leaving them both confused about their relationship.Dave then seeks advice from Simon and Big Corporation, and whilst Simon tells him to move on as their relationship was never going to last, Big Corporation says to be a man and not to bail because of one little mishap.The next day, Dave comes to Aubrey's house and says that he wants to be in a relationship with her in spite of what happened the previous night. Dave then drives Aubrey to school. When they arrive and Aubrey walks to her first class, despite saying to Dave when they first met that she hates public displays of affection, she runs back to Dave and kisses him.

            In New South Wales, Australia, childhood friends Roz (Robin Wright) and Lil (Naomi Watts) and their families live next door to each other. Roz's son Tom (James Frencheville) and Lil's son Ian (Xaiver Samuel), who are both 18, are also best friends, and the four of them spend all their time together.Roz's husband Harold (Ben Mendelsohn) is offered a job in Sydney, and goes there to make arrangements, even though Roz does not want to move. That night, Ian kisses Roz, and although she is hesitant the two of them end up having sex. Tom witnesses Roz coming out of Ian's room. Confused and angry, Tom tries to seduce Lil, who pushes him away, and tells her what he saw. That night, he stays at Lil's house again, and they have sex.Roz goes to Lil's work and they discuss what has happened with their sons. They agree that they both crossed a line, and that it can never happen again. They get together with both of the boys and tell them that things need to end. Ian still has feelings for Roz, and eventually they renew the relationship; they then learn that Lil and Tom never stopped sleeping together. Both Roz and Lil admit that they're happy, and they agree to keep going. When Harold returns, Roz tells him that neither she nor Tom can move with him to Sydney.Two years later.Roz and Harold are divorced, and Roz and Lil have continued their secret affairs. Ian now works with his mother for a successful yacht-building company, and Tom is studying theater. Harold invites Tom to Sydney to direct one of their plays and Tom accepts, staying with Harold and his new family. While in Sydney, he meets Mary (Jessica Tovey), who is auditioning for the lead role. The two begin a relationship, and Lil reluctantly accepts that he has moved on. Roz and Ian are still together, although Roz knows that he will not be attracted to her for much longer. Finally, the mothers agree to end their affairs with the boys. That night, he comes to Roz' door and begs to be let in, but Roz ignores him, crying quietly in her room. Ian goes surfing and breaks his leg.At the hospital, Ian refuses to see Roz, but Hannah comes to visit him and nurses him through his physical therapy. They begin a relationship, but when Ian and Tom meet up for lunch, Ian mentions that it is going nowhere and that he'll have to break it off. One day, Hannah shows up at Ian's work and tells him she is pregnant.Another few years pass, and now Ian and Tom are both married, and they both have daughters. Mary and Hannah, Tom and Ian's wives respectively, are blissfully ignorant of the affairs. They all spend a day together at the beach, and while most are in the water, Ian and Roz share a quiet moment. That night, they all eat dinner together, during which Tom gets drunk and takes a walk to clear his head. Ian follows him and sees him having sex with Lil. Enraged, he tells Mary the truth. The wives are horrified, and leave with the children.When Tom returns later, he finds Roz sitting alone in her room, and she tells Tom that she doesn't think that Mary, Hannah, or their granddaughters will ever come back. Lil tearfully insists that she and Tom tried to stop, but could not keep away from each other. Roz has no words for Lil.Time passes, and Ian goes for a swim in the ocean until he comes to a free-floating dock in the water, the same dock where he first began his flirtation with Roz, and Roz and Lil used to swim to as girls. He climbs on board and sees that Tom, Lil, and Roz are there. After telling them good morning, he lies down beside Roz.
