Born in Charlestown, Rhode Island, Eric Lutes began acting the summer before he started college when friends encouraged him to audition for a community production of "Pajama Game". He landed the role and was hooked. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in acting from the University of Rhode Island. After several commercial spots, Eric moved to New York and appeared in many off-Broadway productions before finally making the move to Los Angeles, where he landed a co-starring role on Caroline in the City (1995). He met his ex-wife, Christine Romeo, when they were cast as husband and wife in a bank commercial. Before their divorce in 2006, they resided in Los Angeles.
