Quantum Leap


            The film opens with sweeping shots of the vast, barren Texas desert as the camera follows a man wandering through this terrain. The man is shown entering a rundown bar as he collapses in exhaustion. The next day, a doctor treating the speechless traveler makes a call to a family member, who we discover is the brother of the ailing man, recommending that he pick his brother up. As Walt, the brother of the wanderer Travis, leaves for Texas from Los Angeles, before the doctor has returned to his patient, the viewer finds that Travis has taken off continuing his wandering through the empty land. Travis is finally found and picked up by Walt in South Texas as Walt tells his silent brother that they are heading back to Southern California. Though Travis is yet to speak, the viewer hears Walt explain how he has not seen nor heard from Travis in four years. Their first stop along the road is a small motel where they plan to rest for the night, but when Walt leaves to get food from the market, Travis starts the shower and takes off again. Walt returns to discover Travis is gone and quickly tracks him down not far up the road and is able to get him back into the car. The next scene shows the two in a diner, Travis still silent, and Walt begins to question Travis more forcefully about his disappearance adding that he left his son, Hunter, behind when he was three for Walt to take care of in Travis' absence. The viewer sees Travis is effected by the mention of his abandoned son as tears flow from his eyes; however, he still fails to answer Walt's inquiries. The pair continue on their road trip the following day and finally Travis begins to speak in the car. He produces a weathered photograph of a vacant lot with a "For Sale" sign explaining to Walt that he purchased the property and that it is located in Paris, Texas- a city mentioned to him by their mother that he believes to be the location of his conception. While Walt is curious about this idea, he claims that he is continuing on to Los Angeles to bring Travis to his son. Upon their arrival, Travis meets the wife of Walt, who has practically mothered Hunter for the last four years, and he confronts the young boy, who is uncomfortable and timid towards the stranger. Walt decides that showing some old home videos might help to break the ice of the awkward relationship between Travis and Hunter. The videos show touching moments of Travis with a newborn Hunter and his wife, Jane, sharing a day at the beach with Walt and his wife. That night, the viewer sees Travis carry out chores around the house as he is sleepless and bewildered by his presence in this house with his son. The next day, Travis shows up at Hunter's school attempting to walk home with him; yet, Hunter sees him across the street, grows weary, and jumps in a car with a friend. Hunter explains that night to Walt's wife that he does not want to walk home at all from school, and certainly not with Travis. She pleads with him to give Travis a chance as he sighs somewhat in compliance. Travis tries again the next day to walk Hunter home and he makes progress as the two silently walk on opposite sides of the street. The viewer sees that eventually Travis's persistence pays off as he and Hunter are beginning to converse more on their walks. One night, as father and son have now grown more comfortable with each other, Walt's wife tells Travis in secrecy that she knows Jane, Hunter's mother, is still around and that she in fact deposits money into a bank account for Hunter on the same day of every month. She goes on to tell Travis the name of the bank and that it is located in Austin, Texas. Travis is almost immediately determined to seek Jane out and he tells Hunter of his plan the next night, explaining why he has to leave, as Hunter tells his father that he wants to accompany him on his journey. 	The following day, after school, the two of them leave together without telling Walt or his wife and once they are far enough out of town, Hunter calls the house telling his caretakers for the last four years that he has left for Texas with Travis. Walt and his wife are devastated as they have both grown extremely close to the boy, but know that they could not have kept him forever. The following scenes show the growing closeness between Travis and his son on this road trip including Hunter educating Travis on things he has learned in school, Travis telling Hunter a little about Jane, and Hunter sleeping comfortably on his dad. They finally arrive at the bank in Austin on the expected day of the deposit and they split up with walkie-talkies to try and locate Jane's car. Hunter spots her as she is leaving and the two make haste to follow her down the highway. The suspected car eventually stops at a place of business and Hunter is told to wait in the car as Travis enters the building. The viewer soon discovers that the business is a peep-show parlor of sorts, where customers sit in a room at a chair on the opposite side of a one-way mirror instructing the female employees as to what they want to see via a telephone-intercom. Travis is shocked, but he enters one of the rooms requesting a blonde whom he hopes will be Jane. The first woman sent into the room is not Jane and he moves to another room where he finds Jane, ready to please her customer, but he is unable to speak. After much silence and confusion on the part of Jane, Travis walks out and returns to the car with Hunter, angry and vague in his explanation as to what he saw. Travis then drives to a bar and begins to drink as Hunter complains and Travis's irritability grows. They return back to their hotel room and Hunter confesses his distaste for this "side" of Travis while Travis is slowly making up his mind as to how to deal with the situation. 	The next day, Travis drives Hunter to a hotel in downtown Austin and drops him off in a room telling him again to wait there while Travis heads back to Jane's work. He goes into a room where Jane enters on the other side of the glass, he picks up the phone, turns his chair so that it faces away from Jane, and begins to speak. He speaks broadly at first, telling the story of a "man" and a "young girl" who met and quickly fell in love with each other. They soon had a child, he says, and married probably before they were really ready for either. Jane is initially confused, wondering why this man might be telling her this, but her confusion transforms into astonishment as Travis's story grows more and more detailed and she begins to grasp who it is on the other side of the glass telling the true story of their relationship. Travis describes how "this couple's" love turned from joyful to stifling, explaining how the drunken "man" was suffocating the "young girl" with his jealousy and control that he tried to impose on her. He tells how the "man" went so far as to tie a cowbell to the "young girl's" foot so that he would hear if she was trying to leave in the middle of the night and how one time, the "man" caught the "young girl" and tied her to the stove with his belt. Jane is coming to tears while Travis continues to speak, informing the viewer of how he came to loathe himself and why he had disappeared for so long never wanting to see a trace of anybody. When he finally finishes, Jane expresses how hard it had been for her to move on from Travis and that she often wondered what had become of him. He finally faces the glass, turning a lamp on his face so that Jane can get a faint glimpse of him. He tells Jane that Hunter is in a hotel room waiting for her and that he would like her to go there to be reunited with him for good. Jane agrees and Travis leaves the room. The final scene follows as the viewer watches Jane enter the hotel room where Hunter is waiting and embrace her child.

            Sgt. Jack Falen (Dennis Hopper) prepares to escort the body of a friend across country for a military funeral. As Jack boards the train, he hears a radio broadcast of President Nixon announcing that America has signed a peace treaty with North Vietnam. At the beginning of his journey, Jack meets Mark (Dean Stockwell). They flirt with a female passenger (Barbara Flood). The woman is attracted to Jack, but he leaves her side to listen to Gene (Zack Norman), a balding land salesman who is arguing baseball with another passenger.Jack then walks away mid-conversation to sit with Emile (Michael Emil), an aging intellectual, who explains yoga positions. Jack spends the day talking with Gene, Emile, and Mark about vegetarianism, chess, and the dangers of smoking, but he cannot sit still and consistently interrupts conversations to leave. However, he relaxes in his sleeping car, listening to music from WWII and smoking a marijuana cigarette. In Vietnam, Jack and his friend would take drugs and watch the tracer bullets fly overhead, but one day a tracer round killed his buddy. Jack insists there will be a band and a parade waiting for the funeral.When Mark invites Jack to the dining car to meet two college girls named Stephanie (Taryn Power) and Chloe (Topo Swope) , Jack changes out of his uniform, and joins them, but he is too anxious to stay at the table, and Stephanie joins him at the bar. Although Jack invites her to his room, Stephanie goes back to the table and Jack leaves. However, Stephanie later goes to Jack's berth and they embrace, but Jack's aggressiveness scares her away.The next morning, Jack apologizes to Stephanie and later reconnects with the lady he flirted with the previous day. She invites him to her cabin and they make love. That evening, Jack dines with Stephanie and Chloe, and when he excuses himself to check on his friend's coffin, Chloe interrogates Stephanie about her feelings for Jack. Later, Jack plays poker with a Korean War veteran who tells him to stop feeling sorry for himself, but as the man talks, Jack hallucinates that Stephanie is being raped by fellow passengers. Jack returns to his quarters and listens to his radio.The next day, Jack flirts with Stephanie and talks with Mark, confessing that he joined the army to escape poverty. Jack hallucinates that he is hunting a military policeman with a pistol throughout the train. Jack rushes to a bathroom, strips off his uniform, and runs naked back to his car. As Jack dresses in his civilian clothes, Mark bursts inside and explains that he is a revolutionary. Mark claims he is being pursued and begs Jack to hide him, but Jack throws him out, raving that Mark is the reason his friend is dead. Jack then hallucinates that Gene, Emile, and the rest of the male passengers chase Mark off the train and beat him. That night, Jack imagines going into a passageway where Mark, wearing an army uniform, approaches. He curls up into a ball and silently screams.The next morning, Stephanie decides to stay on the train with Jack despite Chloe's objections. Stephanie tells her friend that Jack has had a miserable life and she wants to give him one nice experience. Meanwhile, Jack imagines sitting next to an old lady who tells him everything will be fine. A group of train stewards appear, pick up the old woman, and drag her away. When a steward threatens Jack, an old man tells him that he is in great danger.Later, Jack hallucinates that he and Stephanie leave the train and make love in a grassy field. He breaks down, crying that he could not help Mark. The emotion provokes a second hallucination, where Mark morphs into Stephanie, wearing an army dress uniform. Jack keeps making love to Stephanie, but she becomes frightened and pushes him off to run away. The hallucinations end and Jack finds himself sitting alone on the train, sobbing.Upon arriving at his destination, Jack is met by two undertakers instead of a parade. Jack is confused, declaring that his friend was a hero and there should be a crowd to welcome him. The undertakers apologize and inform him of the funeral location and time. Jack wanders around town, ending up in an empty schoolroom, where he hallucinates that he goes home and plays with toy soldiers.At the cemetery, Jack is incensed there are no mourners. He asks to be left alone at the grave site, and has a breakdown. In his mind's eye, he leaps into the grave, opens the coffin, finds his battle gear, and runs across the cemetery to engage in battle.

            On a cross-country fight from Los Angeles to Boston, a group of passengers awaken to find that the majority of the plane's passengers and all of the crew have disappeared. Just before taking off, the flight captain, called Brian Engel (David Morse), is told that his ex-wife and son have died in a fire at home. Because of the shock, he won't be able to pilot the plane and becomes one of the passengers. A blind girl, Dinah Catherine Bellman (Kate Maberly) who is travelling with her aunt Vicki (Julie Arnold Lisnet), mentions that she gets weird vibrations from one of her fellow passengers.Dinah wakes up on her own. She tries to find somebody else and calls out "Anyone here?" several times. She finds only the loose personal objects from missing people: watches, loose change, passports, glasses, even a wig. When she touches the latter, she screams out, waking up Engel and the remaining survivors. All the rest of the people have disappeared. They are 10 people, all in all. One of the passengers, Bob Jenkins (Dean Stockwell), tries to peer out of the windows, but he can only see darkness.While the majority of the group intends to find out what is going on, the only one who is not as concerned about their current predicament is a businessman named Craig Toomy (Bronson Pinchot). He was the person who gave out bad vibes to the little girl. In fact, he is going to a meeting to explain some weird accountancy which has been taking place in his office and has just been found out, but strangely enough, when he is told so by his assistant, he seems quite happy and satisfied about it, and not worried the slightest bit. A rather irrational businessman, Toomy is more concerned about making his business meeting on time, seeing the events at hand as some form of major inconvenience on his part.They have to use some force to calm him down, although he only ends up with the minor problem of a blood running nose.They force the cockpit's door open, and Engel tries to radio out for help, but nobody is listening. The passengers introduce each other, with nothing better to do. Bob is a mystery writer, the blonde lady is Laurel Stevenson (Patricia Wettig), a school teacher; a cute young man, who is a college student of music called Albert Kaussner (Christopher Collet) and who can play the violin; Bethany Simms (Kimber Riddle), a young female student who was going to spend some days with some relatives on vacation; Don Gaffney (Frankie Faison), who is an aircraft mechanic, travelling to Boston on his first assignment. The rude businessman does not want to say his name to the others, and he shouts that he has no time to lose, he needs to arrive to his destination. The rest of the passengers threaten to hit him if he doesn't stop scaring Dinah. At that moment, he suffers a hallucination in which he sees everybody as a kind of human-form gelatin. Then, the attack passes. It looks like all the people still present in the plane had been sleeping, while the ones who mysteriously disappeared had been awake - at least, that is Bob's deduction.Engle manages to pilot the plane to an airport in Bangor, Maine. However, no-one from air traffic control answers, and no-one is found at the airport. Dinah can't hear or smell anybody and she also can't feel any insect, bird or crawling bug. As the group continues to explore the abandoned airport, Craig Toomy remembers an occasion in which he was a small boy (Christopher Cooke) and he got a B+ on an examination, and his father, Roger (John Griesemer) went bananas over it, calling him a loser, a nobody, and punishing him. He snaps and attempts to take one of the survivors hostage, demanding to get to his appointment on time. Using a gun, it surprises everyone when the trigger is pulled, but no bullet is released. This allows the others to overpower Toomy and tie him up.Upon further inspection, they find that there were bullets in the gun, but the gun still doesn't discharge. Moreover, going to a food stand, food and drink appear to have no taste or reaction when exposed to the air. Bob Jenkins, the mystery-writer, surmises that somehow, they must have flown through a time rift. On the flight leaving Los Angeles, Brian recalls that a stewardess had noted to him that the Aurora Borealis was spotted over the Mojave Desert on their flight path, and they might pass near it.Mark Lindsay Chapman...             Dean Stockwell delivers a creepy, sexually suggestive performance as Wilbur Wotley. This film proves that Lovecraft can indeed be portrayed in film where so many have failed miserably. I look to Guillermo Deltorro to carry on the tradition!
