A Bird of the Air


            Ann Gentry (Anjanette Comer) is a social worker whose husband has been injured in a car crash. She takes on the case of the twisted, mysterious Wadsworth family, and takes a special interest in "Baby" (David Manzy), a mentally ill 21-year-old who still acts and is treated like an infant by his mother and sisters. The Wadsworth clan has abused and neglected Baby, but Mrs. Wadsworth (Ruth Roman) has been extremely protective since his father left shortly after his birth, and she isn't going to let another caregiver mess with her son.Ann tries to convince Mrs. Wadsworth that Baby can learn something, but he can't even pick up and return a ball. When his blonde sister Alba (Suzanne Zenor) hits him, frustrated by Baby's baby-like behavior, Mrs. Wadsworth defends him, herself beating Alba in turn. Physically, Baby is an attractive young man physically, and his other sister, Germaine (Marianna Hill), sleeps naked with him. Ann visits a school for "extraordinary children," sees several children play and interact together, compares it to Baby's isolation, and feels sad.The Wadsworth sisters throw a party for some friends. Baby runs around on the dance floor and although he doesn't really fit in, none of the Wadsworth sisters' friends pay any attention to him. Mrs. Wadsworth talks about her runaway husband, and her relief that Baby will never suffer such disappointments. Ann gets dizzy after drinking a cup of punch. Alba and Germaine take her downstairs and tie her down. Baby has sex with Ann, but he doesn't seem to understand what happens. When Ann tries to release herself, Baby starts to cry. The sisters are making out with their loser boyfriends. Baby has to be bathed, and Ann dresses him up in a suit afterward. Ann takes photographs of Baby dressed as an adult, and shows them to his family.Eventually, Ann and her mother take Baby. His family comes after them, but Ann and her mother kill them. Finally, the film reveals why Ann is so interested in Baby:The car crash left Ann's husband with the mental capacity of an infant. Ann wanted Baby as a playmate for him. They play all day, and get along well. Two adult-size cradles appear in their decorated room.The film ends with Ann and her two "babies" swimming in their new pool, which has been built in the backyard over the site where the bodies of Baby's mother and sisters have been buried.

            The film is a fairly literal adaptation of the acclaimed 1960 novel by John Updike (which Updike later followed with three sequels and a novella). Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom (James Caan) comes home one day from his sad, dead-end job to his sad, cramped apartment to find his sad, pregnant wife Janice (Carrie Snodgrass) asleep, splayed in front of the TV, highball glass in hand. After only a moment's contemplation, he decides to leave. Snatching up his coat and car keys, he's off and running, taking the viewer on a rambling, aimless journey.Set in the early 60's in a suburb of Brewer, Pa - a mid-sized, working class, weary-looking town (think Scranton), the film shows some glimpses of Updike's keen sense of place and time - the songs that play on the radio during Harry's all-night drive to Virginia, the hippie-like outfits and sexual rebelliousness of Harry's sister, the once solid row-houses and factories in Brewer hinting at the urban unrest and decay that is to come. This is Harry's hometown, where in high school he was a celebrated basketball star, but now, at 26, is bewildered that the folks in Brewer seem to have forgotten that. Because Harry can't shake the belief that he is still a star, special, meant for better things, and, because he is beset with a child-like narcissism, that everyone else must see that too.After leaving his wife, Harry goes to visit his old basketball coach who introduces him to Ruth Leonard, a sometime prostitute, who he immediately moves in with. When Janice goes into labor a few months later, he leaves Ruth, eventually returning to the apartment with Janice, their 2-year-old son Nelson, and new baby daughter Becky, and taking a job working for his father-in-law selling used cars. But Harry's restlessness still dogs him and domestic harmony does not ensue.Harry is remorselessly ruled by his impulses, but is troubled and perplexed by how he seems to disappoint nearly everyone in his life: Ruth, the minister sent to lead him back to his family, his parents, his in-laws, his wife and son, even the minister's wife. So he runs. But actions have consequences, a fact lost on Harry even when his lead to tragedy.

            Hugo spends his time flying around in his helicopter and scoring with numerous beautiful women. He likes to take his girlfriends to his home, a former nunnery where he collects weapons, cats and human heads. Once a woman come there it is pretty much a done deal that she will become part of the head collection. So Hugo is a pretty twisted individual. He has a creepy mute butler named Dorgo, I man, of course. What else would a creepy mute butler be named? Once Hugo has done his dirty work and has his latest date's head in a jar, he and Dorgo apparently cut up the remains of the body and feed it to the cats....except....there are numerous scenes that show Dorgo disposing of the bodies in an incinerator, so which is it? It's never made clear because this is a very poorly written, directed and edited film. It's just the truth.Anyway Hugo is flying around town buzzing hot women with his helicopter in a way that is clearly dangerous and illegal, but the local authorities don't seem to care and the women find this obviously creepy and obnoxious stalking somehow charming and one by one he gets them to come to his place for brandy, sex and beheading. Is anybody wondering where all of these women are disappearing to? Apparently not. Episode after episode of murder takes place. Mixed in with this, at one point Dorgo makes the fatal error of beating Hugo at chess and ends up as cat food.The last woman he brings home actually fights back when Hugo gets in a decapitating mood and tries to fight him off with a halberd, which of course she has no idea how to use so she tosses it as if it were a javelin missing Hugo, but tearing a hole in the cat enclosure releasing approximately 1000 cats, all of whom are hungry and none of whom like Hugo all that much...except as a snack. The woman escapes, roll credits.
