            A police bulletin reports a 208 is in progress in the C13 area of New Port City. A figure studies a night-scope green image of men talking about programming bugs and Project 2501. A voice reports Section 6 is ready to move in. Major Motoko Kusanagi disconnects wires from the back of her neck and stands up, takes off her overcoat. She does a back layout fall from the top of a tall building. A group of armed and helmeted police enter a building. Inside a room four men are surprised that the police have arrived and two draw their weapons and go to the door to start firing. The older man of the group tells the others to stop shooting and as the police storm the room he claims diplomatic immunity.Nakamura, the head of Section 6 enters to say that taking a programmer out of the country is an offense. However, the young programmer has signed a request for asylum. Suddenly a voice speaks out and assaults the foreigner, an invisible attacker rips the man apart. The police fire at the windows, Nakamura goes to a smashed window to see Major Kusanagi falling and becoming invisible as her thermoptic camoflage turns on again.Title sequence begins showing a cyborg female body undergoing a genesis. Major Kusanagi ascends from a pool of liquid. She awakens from sleep in a dark room, looks pensively out the window then gets dressed in a combat suit and leaves her apartment.A VTOL twin-rotor craft lands on the roof of a tall building. The Japanese Foreign Minister leaves the aircraft and begins talking to the waiting Aramaki, the head of Section 9. They discuss a secret meeting with the Gavel Republic planned for the next day. Gavel has a new revolutionary government and the leader of the old ruling junta is seeking asylum in Japan. The Foreign Minister admits he'd like to deport Col. Maless if he had a good political excuse. He also thanks Section 9 for helping with the programmer defection, as this way the diplomatic corps was able to keep their hands clean.In a lab a group of red-suited techs and Major Kusanagi are studying an unconscious woman, trying to access her brain. She is the Foreign Minister's Interpreter, and has been cyber-brain hacked since 23 minutes earlier while on the phone. Aramaki suggests someone called the Puppetmaster is trying to disrupt the talks with Gavel by turning her into an assassin. Batou and Ishikawa are in a car tracing the signal, the Major goes to rendezvous with them.In their van, the Major dresses in armour as Togusa drives, they discuss the Puppetmaster. He is believed to be an American but nothing else is known about him. He has been active around the world conducting cyber terrorism and ghost-hacking people's brains. This is the first time he has appeared in Japan. They consider it may all be disinformation, then the Major chides Togusa for still using an old style handgun, as she loads and locks a large automatic rifle. Togusa is curious on why he was recruited into Section 9, the Major replies it is because he is still mainly human and so can be an unpredictable non-specialized asset on the team.On an inner city street two garbage collectors are at work. One urges the other to hurry up as the partner is busy at a public access computer terminal. The computer user explains a guy in a bar gave him some software so he could ghost hack his estranged wife. As they drive off Batou and Ishikawa arrive in a hurry and realize they just missed their target, yet again. They talk to a local and begin to suspect the garbagemen. Kusanagi plugs into the net and with Section 9 HQ quickly determines the trash route coincides with hacking locations. She takes over driving the van and issues orders to Batou and Ishikawa. The garbagemen are alerted the police are investigating and the hacker husband decides to go to his programmer friend. Togusa and the Major get close. The vehicles arrive together near a man wearing sunglasses at another 'net station. He fires a submachine gun and takes out the Section 9 van. The Major and Togusa scramble out of the wreck as the shooter continues to riddle the van with armour piercing shells. Batou arrives on the scene and the shooter cloaks himself with thermoptic camoflage and tries to escape.Batou notices the blurry camo and fires back. The Major goes to the rooftops to scan. The man enters a crowded street market area. A wild gunfight continues as Batou gives chase. The Major tries also but the man seems to escape and stands in a shallow waterfront. An invisible Major Kusanagi proceeds to kick the man senseless. On questioning Batou and the Major realize the man was also a hacked puppet.Outside a large estate house Aramaki and Section 9 prepare to assault. A helicopter lands on the lawn and a man they believe to be the Puppetmaster disembarks. Further questioning of the garbageman reveals he has been hacked also and given false family memories.Major Kusanagi floats from the depths of the harbour. Batou greets her onboard a boat and asks why she dives. They drink beer and reflect on being high maintenance supercyborgs. The Major speaks briefly in a different voice.In a grimy cityscape the Major rides a water ferry and gazes at the city around her. A sad eyed beagle stares back.On a roadway at night a blonde woman is hit by a car. In the Section 9 lab she is a cyborg wired up and is electro-shocked. She had been built two hours earlier at Megatech and escaped. The body has no organic brain but does have semblance of a ghost. The Major decides to dive into the brain to investigate and pauses to reflect on her own existence.Nakamura from Section 6 Treaties Section of the MFA arrives with an associate. Nakamura shows a card signed by the Foreign Minister and demands the cyborg body. In the parking garage Togusa is suspicious and checks the video of the Section 6 arrival. He reports the men may have come in with thermoptic camoflaged cyborgs.In the lab Aramaki and Nakamura view the partially dissembled torso of the mystery cyborg. The other Section 6 man, Dr. Willis, starts keyboarding and confirms the the cyborg is the Puppetmaster. Section 6 has also been chasing him and they lured him into the cyborg body. The torso comes alive and states it's name is Project 2501, a self aware computer program and requests political asylum.The camoflaged Section 6 cyborgs attack and grab the torso. Before driving away Togusa manages to hit the car with a tracking device bullet. Aramaki authorizes Section 9 to retake Project 2501, but to destroy it if they can't recover it. Meanwhile Ishikawa reports on his investigation. Dr. Willis and the defecting programmer from earlier developed Project 2501 for Japanese Foreign Ministry diplomatic dirty tricks, but somehow they lost control of it. Section 6 is trying to cover it all up.Out in the city Batou realizes there is a decoy car, The cars split up. The one Batou is chasing hits a roadblock and the two men inside are killed by sniper fire. Kusanagi in a helicopter overlooks the other car. She rappels down with her warbag then realizes the car is protected by a large cloaked walking tank. The Major loads up with heavy ammo as Batou rushes to help. After a hot and heavy firefight The Major gets on top of the tank and tries to lift the hatch. Her arms tear off and the tank grappels her head and shakes her like a doll. Batou arrives with an anti-tank weapon and takes out the armoured vehicle. He takes the Project 2501 torso from the car and places it beside the wounded Motoko. In the skies above two Section 6 helos observe and prepare. Batou wires up the Major to the torso.Project 2501 speaks through the Major and explains himself. He states he learned of Section 9 on the 'net and planned this joining up. Project 2501 wants to experience real life and death and proposes a merger with the Major. Batou is unable to disconnect the wires as the Section 6 targeting lasers rove over the female bodies. Section 6 is hacked to give the merger more time. As the Major sees the light the blond torso is destroyed with a headshot. Batou manages to partially cover the Major's face with his arm as another Section 6 shot seems to destroy Kusanagi.In an apartment a young girl with blank eyes sits in a armchair. The girl stirs and is greeted by Batou, it is Kusanagi in the only body Batou could find. 20 hours have passed since the shooting, the Foreign Minister has resigned but the incident will be covered up. The girl gets up to leave and tells Batou she is neither the Puppetmaster nor Major Kusanagi, rather a new being. The newborn states "the 'net is vast and infinite" as she leaves the safe house.

            During the Sengoku-era in Japan, a young boy named Kotaro flees from mysterious pursuers with his dog, Tobimaru. The monk who had been watching over Kotaro, Shouan, tells him to seek help from Master Zekkai at the Mangaku temple in Akaike Province. Meanwhile, a group of Ming foreigners under the command of the elderly Lord Bai-Luan are escorted through Akaike by local liaisons. They are ambushed by bandits, but the bandits are slaughtered by the Ming's expert swordsman, Luo-Lang.Kotaro and Tobimaru make their way across the land, briefly hiding out in a rundown temple where they meet Nanashi, a wandering swordsman. As Kotaro cooks a meal, smoke from his fire alerts his pursuers, who turn out to be the Ming foreigners accompanied by Akaike soldiers. Nanashi unintentionally gets involved in the fight and is able to kill the men, but Tobimaru is struck by a venomous dagger. Before Nanashi decides to leave, Kotaro offers to hire him as a bodyguard in order to save Tobimaru's life and take them to their destination safely.The trio is able to find an apothecary who is able to help Tobimaru recover over a few days. While shopping in town, Nanashi encounters the other Ming warriors and Luo-Lang begins to pick a fight with him for fun, but is interrupted by news of his comrades' deaths. Upon investigation, the Ming begin to suspect the Akaike soldiers are responsible because one of the corpses was staged to appear as Tu-Si, one of the Ming warriors who previously went missing.The Lord Akaike, who is hosting the Ming, is helping them build a large altar in exchange for large amounts of gold. It is revealed that he kidnapped the missing Ming in order to discover their true purpose for being in Japan. Under torture Tu-Si reveals that they are on a mission for the Emperor of China to find a prophesied child, Kotaro, whose blood can be drained at a certain time once a year in order to create an elixir of immortality known as the Xian Medicine. Lord Akaike changes his plans to capture the child first and hold him for a high ransom.Nanashi successfully reaches the temple with Kotaro and leaves him in the care of the monks. However, it is revealed that they have already betrayed Kotaro to the Ming in order to save their own lives. A fight ensues when the Akaike also arrive to take the boy. With Lord Akaike's treachery uncovered, the Ming take him prisoner and fortify themselves at the altar to await the prophesied time. Realizing that something went wrong, Nanashi goes back and frees Tobimaru, and they track Kotaro and his captors. The sole remaining commander of the Akaike, Itadori, is given command of their forces by the princess and charged with rescuing the captured Lord. However, when he and his men arrive at the fortress, Itadori, seeing Lord Akaike in a compromising position, kills him and uses the opportunity to fulfill his own ambitions. The troops, now under his command, begin an assault and storm the fortress.During the ensuing battle many of the Ming and Akaike soldiers are killed, including Itadori. Nanashi finally arrives to save Kotaro and successfully interrupts the ritual before it can be completed. Lord Bai-Luan orders the remaining Ming to capture the boy so that they may try the ritual again the next year. Nanashi kills two of the Ming fighters without his sword and wins the admiration of Luo-Lang, who has been searching for a worthy opponent. Luo-Lang cuts down his own benefactor, Bai-Luan, in order to save Nanashi from being shot. With the other Ming and Akaike forces entirely wiped out, Luo-Lang and Nanashi have a final duel. After sustaining many injuries Nanashi wins and Luo-Lang dies with shock and peace.Nanashi, Kotaro, and Tobimaru ride away on a horse to a town to treat Nanashi's injuries. They talk about gathering enough money to go overseas and start a new life. As the movie ends the camera pans down on the tracks they leave in the snow, showing drops of fresh blood.
    

Sword of the Stranger


            At night, Major (ret'd) Motoko Kusanagi crouches high on top of a harbour crane and monitors the police radio.At the airport, Togusa arrives in his Infiniti SUV to lead a group of Section 9 agents to storm a hostage situation. A Colonel Ka Gael has taken a female hostage. Surrounded by Section 9, Ka Gael is high on drugs and says fearfully that "the Puppeteer", is coming before shooting himself in the head. An eavesdropping Kusanagi takes note and drops into the night.Aramaki walks to a waiting VTOL with a young aide, Proto. He talks to Prime Minister Kayabuki about a recent string of suicides by the followers of General Ka Rum of the Seok Republic, including the man's eldest son Ka Gael moments ago. The PM won't allow Section 9 to interrogate The General, who is under house arrest, for political reasons. Aramaki decides to disobey her and leads a raid on Ka Rum's home.Batou is at another police crime scene, another Seok suicide victim and follower of General Ka Rum. Aramaki sends Batou to investigate another lead.The Section 9 team in the VTOL discuss the political reasons for the PM's decision, Japan was somehow forced to allow General Ka Rum asylum and there are six other countries involved. The General had vowed to lead a reign of terrorism if his country Seok fell, which it did.Landing at a secure island, Section 9 enters the buildings in optical camoflage. They find the General dead, seemingly having killed himself. Ishikawa notes the dead man had been linked to the a medical 'net using it to contact his operatives. They discover plans for Seok operatives to deploy a micromachine virus in a terrorist attack but are puzzled by the suicides. Ishikawa says there is a program running to make it look like the General is still alive, it appears the death was an asassination disguised as a suicide. Before he died, Ka Rum wrote "Puppeteer" on the floor in his own blood. A webcam records the scene and the Section 9 discussion, they decide not to report the dead body.Batou and a Hatchikoma are going to intercept a man named Ma Shaba, the operative who received the micromachine virus, he sees a lone car parked outside the hospital location. Just ahead of him Kusanagi is also going to Ma Shaba. She takes a large box from a refrigerated cabinet. Suddenly a large six-legged walking tank attacks the Major, Batou sees her from a distance. Ma Shaba is in hysterics driving the armoured vehicle. The Hatchikoma is damaged. Batou and the Major chat briefly. The Major leaps on top of the tank and unlocks the hatch. The man inside is dead. The Major takes the box and warns Batou to stay away from the Solid State Society before driving away in Batou's Ford GT.Batou does not reveal to Section 9 that he encountered the Major, claiming instead that Ma Shaba attacked him, for no apparent reason. Section 9 develop a theory that the Puppeteer is a hacker surpassing "wizard class" who hacked into the Seok agents' cyberbrains and forced them to commit suicide.Inside the hospital Togusa discovers sixteen kidnapped children. The team think that Ka Rum's revenge plot was to disseminate the micromachine virus into the public using the children as carriers.The Major enters a room and enters a glassed-in pod, another male figure exits another pod and leaves with the box from the hospital. In a large room the Major sits at the controls of a large machine fronted by a huge display screen. As she gets up to leave an android falls to the ground and the Major tells herself "controlling two remote bodies is my limit".Back at Section 9 HQ Saito arrives from a tough assignment in Africa. Togusa leads a team brainstorm session, there is a missing terrorist named Raj Puhto out of the original Seok group of 16. 144 ampules of the micro machine virus are missing. Togusa thinks a third party was present at the hospital battle with Batou, the person may be the Puppeteer although Batou denies seeing anyone else.Section 9 observes the recovered 16 children. They determine their cyberbrains had the memories partially erased and their personal IDs assigned to fake parents. In each case, the fake parents were "Noble Rot Senior Citizens", bedridden elderly connected to the health care nursing network, which takes care of their basic needs but results in its users becoming nearly comatose. Section 9 is puzzled on why the children had been kidnapped by the Seoks. Togusa orders further digging into the records.At the Ministry of Heatlth, Labour and Welfare Batou's yellow car enters the parking lot.Section 9 discovers a discrepancy in the records of various government agencies that suggests that over 20,000 unreported child kidnappings had taken place over the last two years. Suddenly their computer is infected by a Class E virus, Batou has to use a fire axe on the power cables to stop the hack. Aramaki arrives with the box of Seok virus ampules, they had been left at the MHLW Pathogenic Microorganism Isolation Facility. Aramaki suggests the Puppeteer is a government agent and to let the whole matter rest, other than identifying the 16 children. Aramaki goes to his car, Batou is waiting in the backseat waiting to have a private conversation with the Chief. Aramaki admits he made a deal with the Prime Minister, and the government Treaty Review Department had General Ka Rum killed. The two men also discuss the future of Section 9, Aramaki says Togusa is being groomed for the leadership.There is an emergency in Room 47, Section 9 agent Proto is ready to shoot himself and the rescued children are missing.Aramaki goes to visit a bedridden and senile Colonel Tonoda, attended by scantily-clad maid-bots. Also there is Aramaki's old friend from Intelligence who gives him a file.Batou tells Togusa about his encounter with the Major, and his suspicion that the Major may be the Puppeteer.Aramaki orders Batou to take Saito and search for Raj Puhto, a Seok operative and elite sniper who was the commander of Ka Rum's personal guard, recently seen in Japan. They locate him in a taxi on a highway and tail him in circles around and around a tall double office tower complex. Meanwhile, Togusa tracks one of the sixteen children to the apartment of a Noble Rot Senior Citizen connected to the health monitoring system.In the Treaty Review Department Archive Room a man greets a buxom blond version of Major Kusanagi calling her the Puppeteer. She refunds a payment then goes blank, the body was a puppet.Togusa finds one of the missing kids sleeping in an old man's decrepit apartment. The man was named as the boy's guardian in the boy's altered personal ID. When Togusa picks the boy up, the man arouses from his comatose state to demand the return of the child, saying that he has named the child as his sole heir as he would rather leave his assets to a stranger rather than to the government, and claiming that the child would have been abused if he were not placed in his care. He says that this is the will of the Solid State, and warns that if Togusa interferes with their enterprise he will become another suicide. The man dies immediately afterward. Togusa gives the boy over to the Children's Aid, pointing out the ID error. Afterward, he comes to the realization that had he not interfered the boy would have been passed on to social services and adopted after the death of his Noble Rot Senior Citizen guardian. This, he realizes, was the plan of the Solid State all along as other senior citizens stare at him. Togusa receives a phone call from his wife saying that his daughter has gone missing. He rushes home.The taxi finally stops and lets Puhto out, he turns on his invisibility optical camoflage and the two Section 9 lose track. Saito guesses where he may be, Batou spots the man from afar as the Seok sniper aims at a man riding in a limo. Saito wounds Puhto with a long range shot. Batou then questions Puhto who reveals that he had received intelligence from a man named Munei that identified his target as the mastermind of the assassination of Ka Rum. However, it is quickly discovered that Munei himself was Puhto's target. Batou suggests that Puhto may have been set up by the Puppeteer. Puhto agrees that this may have been the case, and says he would kill the Puppeteer if it were human. He claims that the Puppeteer is a mechanism built into the Solid State, which he identifies as the health care monitoring network, and implies that the Japanese government is stealing children.When Togusa reaches home it turns out to be a false alarm, as his daughter was only at the neighbors'. He decides to drive her to school. While driving Batou calls to recap and express his hunch that the Seoks somehow found out about the nursing net and planned to use if for their own purposes. Then Togusa takes a call on his daughter's cell from a disguised voice that starts to hack him, and he is made to drive to a cyberbrain hospital. He is also tracked down by Batou and Section 9, who realized that he had been hacked. During the hacking, Togusa converses with a voice he believes is the Puppeteer. He realizes that this was how all of the children were abducted: the parents' cyberbrains were hacked, and the parents were made to personally escort their children for a cyberbrain transplant operation. Afterward, the parents' memories were altered to make them forget they ever had the child. Togusa accepts that he has to kill himself to save his daughter and brings his gun up to his head. Batou is running but is too far to reach him. As Togusa starts to squeeze the trigger the Major materializes and stops him just in time, Batou comforts the scared little girl.The Major explains that she stumbled across the case of the missing children while wandering alone through the net in the years since she left Section 9, and set up Togusa as bait to unmask the identity of the Puppeteer. She explains that the Puppeteer is a gestalt running on a hub cyberbrain, Batou links to Motoko to get the whole story. Three virtual tachikoma AIs, assist her in locating the current location of the hub cyberbrain: the Sacred Citizen Relief Centre, the double office tower where the health care monitoring system is managed.The Major rejoins Section 9 to help the investigation. They focus on Hitoshi Munei, a reactionary conservative member of the House of Representatives who advocates a racially pure Japanese ruling class, he has links to the Treaty Review Department. The Major explains that she had a contract with the TRD to carry out Ka Rum's assassination. However, by the time she got there, the Puppeteer had already killed Ka Rum. Munei also wields control over the Sacred Citizen Relief Center, which he and other politicians arranged as a front for an "elite training facility" - a brainwashing factory to develop new members of the elite. The Major speculates that Munei was targeted for elimination by the Puppeteer because his brainwashing facility was interfering with the goals of the Solid State Society, which housed kidnapped children at the same facility.After analyzing the building's systems and layout, Ishikawa determines that the Centre was designed and built with the kidnapping setup included from the beginning, which means that the Puppeteer must have been involved from the start. Section 9 decides to raid the Centre with the help of the Major's Tachikomas, who are returned to new physical bodies. Kusanagi and Togusa split up as they fight large bipedal security cyborgs and armed androids. The Major finds a main computer terminal and starts to hack in.Inside, Chief Aramaki confronts Munei in a room where many children are wearing large helmet headsets. The Assemblyman admits to taking money from the Noble Rot Senior Citizen project to fund his "education" program. He justifies it by arguing his program is for the future of Japan. Togusa reports there are only 3000 kids on site . Munei says he was unaware of the Solid State abduction system, believing the children in his program were orphans. A man, Tateaki Koshiki, steps forward and claims responsibility for the Solid State system. He shoots himself in the head. The Major plugs into the dying cyberbrain before his memories are lost as Batou uses a Tachikima to provide a power boost.Motoko links with the brain and she goes limp. Koshiki explains that his actions were motivated by several problems: The more than six million Noble Rot Senior Citizens, the rising unemployment rate and shrinking working population, the low birth rate, and the fact that over 50 thousand children die needlessly each year as a result of abuse. The Solid State Society was his attempt to recycle the ghosts of the Noble Rot Senior Citizens and help the abused children. He altered the household registrations of children in high-risk homes to place them in the care of the Noble Rot Senior Citizen, giving the children new opportunities and giving the Noble Rot Senior Citizen a purpose in life, as well as the ability to leave a successor despite their lack of children, and to prevent their estate from being seized by the state upon their death. The Noble Rot Senior Citizens readily agreed to participate. Koshiki further elaborates that he attempted to eliminate Munei because he wanted to brainwash the children to become part of the elite cadre, which was counter to the goals of the Solid State Society, which wanted the children to have free will.Koshiki then reveals his trap. He shot himself in the head so he could hack into the Major'smind and eliminate Section 9. With control over the Major's cyberbrain, he makes her see his face as images of Batou, Togusa, the Laughing Man, Kazundo Gouda, Chief Aramaki, Hideo Kuze, and finally the Major herself. A flashback to an earlier scene showed Koshiki as the puppet leaving the Major's spare body nest .The Major passes out as Koshiki's cyberbrain dies in a whiteout. She stirs lying facedown in an electronic cot.Aramaki and Togusa discuss the future of the abducted children, who will be returned to their parents. Aramaki says they just have to follow the rules and not judge.Batou explains the story of the real Koshiki to the Major when she regains consciousness. Tateaki Koshiki, age 33, was a fast track civil servant who grew bored with no sense of purpose. Due to his high cyberbrain skills he had been recruited by Munei but he programmed his own abduction system into Munei's. He gained special permission to work entirely from home but no one noticed when he died two years ago because he never personally dealt with anyone. In this time, his cybernetic body continued to act under the Puppeteer's or the senior citizens gestalt control. Batou says that the Tachikoma may have kept a record of the Major's conversation with Koshiki but the tank claims that it was erased in the white out when he died. Batou may have his own memory of the conversation although he says it all doesn't really matter now does it?The Major relfects on her recent past andlooks out on the city, and says "The net is truly vast and infinite."

            An insectoid single seat helicopter flies over a high rise city at night. Down below Batou drives his car through a pedestrian filled street and arrives at a crime scene. The cops tell him a perp killed two cops. Batou cocks his shotgun and goes into a dark alley by himself. He finds the dead police and also a female figure sitting quietly. She attacks Batou, but he punches her out easily. She whispers "Help me" and reveals herself to be a cyborg.Title sequence showing a stylized birth/genesis of a cyborg form.Section 9 view a briefing describing eight recent killings by the Locus Solus #2052 "Hadaly" type gynoids, which then self-destruct. Aramaki explains Section 9 is now involved because there have been no civil lawsuits, a politician and a retired public servant are among the victims and terrorism is a possibility. He tells Batou and Togusa to check out the gynoids while Ishikawa and Azuma check background.In the car Togusa and Batou discuss the missing Major Kusanagi. They drive to the police Forensics lab. They meet a chain-smoking weary cyborg technician, Miss Haraway, who has been examining the alley-way gynoid Batou captured. The gynoids are somehow able to free themselves of moral code #3, not to harm humans. She theorizes on why robots commit suicide. Haraway also explains the gynoids are "sexaroids" equipped with otherwise unnecessary organs. Togusa understands why the victim's families have settled out of court. The alley-gynoid brain was wiped clean except for the audio phrase "help me".Back in the car the two S9 agents plan to find the manufacturer's inspector when the Section 9 dispatcher reports a "602", the victim is the Locus Solus inspector at a boathouse. On scene they find Ishikawa already there. The dead man is Jack Volkerson, age 54 who has been missing for five days. The kitchen sink and bathroom are splattered with blood and bloody knives. Batou finds a 3D photo of a young girl. The three men leave as a Forensics CSI team arrive.Ishikawa drives Batou home, they stop to buy some dog food, Ishikawa suggests dry food is better. Batou gets out of the car and misdirects Ishikawa on where his apartment is. Entering his flat Batou is greeted by a playful large basset hound. Batou carefully cooks a meal for the dog and quietly relaxes with a beer.Section 9 view a forensics report on Volkerson, it indicates he was killed with a hit to the neck and then dismembered and eviscerated. A deformed door knob at the scene suggests someone with an illegal cyber hand "claw" was there. Also, a car registered to a local yakuza group "Kojinkai" was found nearby. It turns out a gynoid killed the head of the Kojinkai group three days ago. It may be a revenge killing but Aramaki tells Togusa and Batou to continue, the rest go back to regular duties. In a private moment, Aramaki cryptically asks Togusa to keep an eye on Batou's emotional state.In the garage Batou loads heavy weapons into the trunk, Togusa is alarmed and only wants to talk to the yakuza. Arriving at the Kojinkai club with several men lounging about, they demand to see Wakabayashi, the new leader. The gangsters draw weapons but Batou is quicker and starts cutting them down with his own automatic rifle. More yakuza arrive and a wild firefight continues, Batou takes them all out. The two agents explore upstairs and find the leader and the mutant claw cyborg. Batou makes short work of the cyborg, a terrified Wakabayashi claims Locus Solus told them where Volkerson was but he doesn't know what the former leader was doing with the robot company. Later, Aramaki mildly reprimands Batou and Togusa for acting like vigilantes.Togusa drops Batou off at his favourite mini-mart. A short figure warns him of a kill zone and Batou warily scans the other shoppers. A gunfight erupts and Batou is hit several times, his cyber vision starts to fail. Suddenly ishikawa appears with a pistol grip plugged into the back of Batou's neck. Back in the Section 9 lab Batou awakens with a new arm. He had been brain hacked and made to shoot himself. Ishikawa and Togusa arrive with the pet basset. Batou always went to that store because it was the only place that had the special dog food. Batou and Togusa decide to go after Locus Solus in the Northern Frontier.They fly to a strange industrial looking city, tall towers that resemble oil refinery cracking towers and radio antennae. A former special economic zone it is now a crumbling lawless place. The bird-like VTOL craft lands at an old medieval-style cathedral. An elaborate and colourful parade makes it's way down a canal. Batou and Togusa find an old snitch, Lin, and ask him about a man named Kim. Outside a large mansion Batou explains that Kim is a former military electronics expert. They enter the house and into a luxurious foyer. A female doll-like figure has the letters "aemaeth" displayed before it. The two S9 men go upstairs to a library. They find a dessicated corpse-like cyborg. Batou realizes the body is a sham and tells Kim to talk, they know each other from the war years earlier. Kim explains that Locus Solus is making the gynoids on a factory ship in international waters. Kim talks rhetorically about dolls and humans. Togusa finds a model of the mansion and looks into a window. He sees himself and Batou as they walk toward the mansion as a replay. Once again they enter as before, the foyer is slightly different, this time the doll has the letters "maeth". Kim's body upstairs is now a replica of Togusa. Kim continues to philosophize on men, machines and computers. Suddenly another replay of the two entering the mansion. In the foyer the doll is gone and the letters on the floor are "2501". Now the Kim body is a Batou replica. Offshore a battleship starts to shell the mansion, in the wreckage Togusa sees himself as a cyborg. Back to reality, Batou tells Togusa he has been hacked. He also explains the "maeth" message is from his "guardian angel" warning them. While Kim is a dead end, Batou decides to attack the Locus Solus ship, he rides a robo-whale underwater as Togusa clears security by hacking the system from an escort vessel using what is left of KIm's ebrain.Batou enters the ship. The security system realizes there is an intruder and makes attempts to stop Batou. Togusa and Kim are zapped by a bolt of energy. On the ship the robo-guards go after Batou. One of the gynoids comes to life and starts fighting the guards. Other gynoids attack Batou, he is surrounded. One gynoid descends to fight alongside Batou, after a lull they talk and Batou realizes it is Major Kusanagi, using the body as a remote puppet. The two continue to mow down the attacking gynoids. Kusanagi opens a data terminal and plugs in to hack the shipboard system. She is able to shut it all down just as Batou empties his last ammo clip.Kusanagi directs the ship to move south to Japan waters, it will be evidence against Locus Solus. Exploring further they enter a room where there are large devices. Locus Solus was illegally brainwashing girls supplied by the Kojinkai mob and dubbing the ghosts into the gynoids. Batou hears a faint "help me" and rescues a young girl from the dubbing apparatus, she is the same as from the 3D photo at the ea;l. They realize Volkerson had changed the ethics codes so that when the gynoids made trouble someone would notice and eventually come to save the girls. Kusanagi departs the puppet body after telling Batou she'll always be in the 'net.At Togusa's house Batou gets his pet back and notices the daughter's life-like doll.

            By the 2060s, robotics technology has advanced to the point that cybernetics have become plausible. World opinion begins to turn against robotics, leading to the U.N. declaring a unilateral ban on further research and development in 2067. Japan, being home to robotics pioneer Daiwa Heavy Industries, the governing body, strongly protests this ban, but is unable to prevent its passage.In protest, Japan withdraws from international politics. All foreigners are deported, and further immigration is prohibited. In addition, the R.A.C.E. network is constructed a series of 270 off-shore installations that cover Japan with an energy field that distorts the entire electromagnetic spectrum, nullifying all communication between Japan and the outside world and making even satellite surveillance impossible. Trade and diplomacy continues, but for all intents and purposes, Japan vanishes from the world scene.Ten years later, the American Navy technology Special Forces unit "SWORD" is lead on the intel of a Japanese informant of a trap set by Daiwa in Colorado. The instigator, Saito, escapes, cut off his own leg to get rid of Vexille Serra, a soldier of SWORD. Analysis of the leg show that it is made of bio-metal. SWORD then begin to suspect that Japan has used the R.A.C.E network to conceal extensive development of banned technologies. They thus embark on an unapproved scheme to infiltrate Japan and determine the distortion frequency of the R.A.C.E. network, enabling SWORD to gather intelligence on the country.Although the agents successfully enter Japan, they are detected by security forces before they can transmit the distortion frequency. Vexille is the sole SWORD agent to evade capture or death, and only her lover Leon survives to be taken to Daiwa's headquarters.Vexille awakens without her powered armor suit to find that Tokyo is now a shanty town ruled by Daiwa. A small resistance movement opposes the company, and uses Vexille's backup transmitter to successfully transmit the distortion frequency. Maria, the head of the resistance and former agent of Bureau Public Security, details the ten years of secrecy while SWORD studies the Japanese archipelago in shocked horror the islands are a wasteland devoid of life.In 2067, an unknown disease struck the Japanese populace, and was countered by an experimental vaccine. In truth, the disease was created by Daiwa and the "vaccine" was merely an excuse for Daiwa to begin mass testing of experimental nanotechnology. Every Japanese citizen was thus converted into a form of synthetic life. And like any experimental technology, there were unforeseen side effects.The conversion is imperfect, ultimately resulting in the infected humans entirely losing their free will and becoming merely lifelike machines. In addition, some of the nanotech went amok, resulting in the "Jags", giant whirling constructs of semisentient metal that prowl the wilderness like metallic sandworms. The Jags have destroyed all of Japan save Tokyo, which is protected by an inedible wall of ceramic.The Resistance plans to draw the Jags along a service bridge to Daiwa's corporate headquarters, which now stands in the middle of Tokyo Bay. Despite a tense moment when she discovers that Maria was once Leon's lover, Vexille volunteers her assistance (and that of her flight-capable armor) in this effort. However, though Vexille and Maria succeed in drawing the Jags to the end of the service bridge, the bridge has been detached from the headquarters, the Jags fall into the sea, and Vexille and Maria are captured.The two rebels are taken to Kisaragi, the master of Daiwa, who boasts that his research is nearly complete. And as he needs more test subjects than just Vexille and Leon, he is going to invade America to get them. Vexille attacks him with a hidden knife, revealing that his blood is still human he has not used the process himself due to its shortcomings. Saito, then strangles him.At this point, the town council forces the ceramic gates open, destroying Tokyo and enabling the Jags to use the primary cargo bridge to enter Daiwa's headquarters. Kisaragi, having somehow survived, shoots Saito and escapes with his research. The underling then releases Vexille and Maria before succumbing to his wounds.Vexille pursues Kisaragi while Maria frees Leon. The lover's reunion is a poignant one, as while he did not abandon her as she always assumed, he has moved on his concern for Vexille is evident. Thus when Vexille prevents Kisaragi's escape in a helicopter, Maria grapples him and smiles as her cybernetic body draws a Jag to devour them both. Vexille and Leon are rescued by a SWORD helicopter just as Daiwa headquarters collapses into the bay, along with every Jag in Japan.As Vexille and Leon are flown from a now completely lifeless Japan, Vexille comments that humanity's spirit can never be taken away.
